I had to give it a try, so I made a quick mario map with some sprites I borrowed online and bellow a very short demo of sprites in use. I didn't want to spend anymore time on this because I realize how fun side scrollers are and decided to start on a smash bros type map.
I think it's due that I rephrase so you get a clearer idea of my intentions and what I meant, and getting back on-topic.
DrHu, Great job with implementing the usage of the sprites into the editor and setting it up like the classic we all know and love, I do not want to discourage you from continue to work on it, as it is a clever idea that I think a lot of people will enjoy.
What I phrased extremely badly in my first post was meant as a notice, a heads up, if you will, that Blizzard has shown signs on strict rules when it comes to copyright infringement and it would be a shame if this was such a case. But by all means, you never know unless you try.
So keep up the good work, I'm looking forward on seeing how you/others will develop this technique.
So, Theoraticly your screwed if your name is Mario and your a plummer?
So if he'd rename all the things, like Mario = Gario and the Koopa's are Woopa's and your done? ^^
Yes, you can rename him Gario and so on. However, you are not allowed to use the model of Mario either (even if you paint him yourself). As the design itself is copyrighted. You are however free to develop a similar design.
Btw, how easy is the sprite engine to work with? Does it require any special skills to incorporate it into your own map?
No special skill, the sprite are just text actors and everything else are triggers. Each actor activates depending on facing angle, key pressed, height, etc. Well, this is the way I did it, not sure if there is another way.

@DrHu: Mario is jumping too high , too fast!
I Like teh sprites… We need to get an entire mario map released lol.
Awesome, love the idea
It's a shame you won't be able to publish it on B.net though, due to copyright issues. But still, nice job :)
@Zarakk: Go
Just put in some copyright bla bla in the game itself. And not sure how long you can copyright a sprite, but doubt its that long
Copyrighted material lasts as long as the owner lives plus like 70 years. Shigeru Miyamato is still living.
It's not the sprite that I mean is copyrighted, the character Mario and everything that appears in his games are owned and licensed by Nintendo.
And the owner is technically Nintendo.

I would publish to see what they do..
Blizzard will make the decision.. why not just see what they decide.
haha Cool. I do agree he jumps a bit too high/fast though :P
lol, that's awesome...
yeah, thats one of the reason i stopped cause of the whole copyright issue. Wasn't really sure if there was one. Anyways this was just a test.

I see that done far too often :(
Very cool. I wanted to see double jumps and mario getting killed for walking into them.
AND TURTLE SHELLS(ftw)!!!!

Whats the concept on how to do it? Is it replacing images, or is it something else?
