I meant in general. People who are okay with worse graphics are the cause of consoles. If I were president, consoles would be illegal.
Consoles ruin everything. They dumb down gameplay, graphics, and are the cause of DLC. Their infection is spreading to the PC.
All because of people like him with lower standards.
There's a far greater issue, i guarantee it. Every single sequel released lately is followed by a bunch of whiny ex-fanboys harping on how whatever company that made the sequel in question did this to mess with them personally, and how somehow this stops them from playing the holy grail. I.E. whatever came just before the sequel. Toss in a bunch of holier-than-thou uber nerds sneering at the unwashed masses and their non-ultra super duper X, and we've got more to worry about than "lowering standards of industry".
If that sounded overly rage-y, it's only because i'm fed up with complaining with no use or effort to be part of the solution, and this was the proverbial straw. :(
I'm not trying to make rules for everyone else. I tried watching videos that were posted, and when it turned out they were of so low quality I couldn't tell what was going on, I came here and made this post.
I don't understand why people are arguing with me.
This is a forum. You are posting your opinion. What did you expect would happen?
Sure, who likes low-quality videos? It is important to realise that not everybody have new computers. But can we really be so selfish so as not to check out something that another person spent possibly several hours on making for our sakes, when it only takes a minute of our time? We're a community! We all share a passion for custom games in Starcraft 2. We should encourage eachother and give constructive criticism, not rant about how they should stop making videos.
On another note, what is the minimum resolution for Starcraft 2? 1024x768? Already that would make an HD video on Youtube. It would seem that if people put up lower resolution videos than that, then there's a lack of knowledge regarding video editing, rather than a lack of hardware.
It is their lack of hardware. You can set it to record at half resolution on fraps, at least. So you can record a 768 at 384, which just looks really really bad.
The "why are you arguing with me" was directed at the guy saying my opinion doesn't matter. Like I said, I'm just posting from a horrifying experience with watching a low res video yesterday. It was of a map I thought interesting.
I think it was by a guy named Mud, he posted a topic about a virus ability or something. The point is, it annoyed me because I couldn't tell what was going on.
I do say that 360p is near unwatchable, 480p being the bare minimum. But I don't really think that Ultra settings is really required to make a good impression. High resolution, low settings, good framerate = Acceptable, at least until you go huge.
He's right. I drive a nice car and I would never consider hopping on a bus. Ever. Just, eww.
I also generally don't watch videos unless they're 720p or greater.
Having said this, this thread belongs in r/firstworldproblems.
I was avoiding this thread but might as well post... I as well agree its 720p or no point. I have dual monitors (three at some times) at max resolution, I watch any video at full screen.. anything below 720p is hard to see (lots of blurs on text...ect) and honestly 50% of the time.. ill just skip it.
On the part of it being choppy/Ultra Choppy does not bug me at all when it comes to sc2 trailers.. I understand not all comps are created equal. However when it comes to ultra or not... thats not going to make me watch it or not.. but im sorry, if you dont use ultra your videos are going to be ugly, and instantly give your map a bad taste to anyone watching the video...thats just how it is.. so... will I still watch it if not ultra? yes... but in all honesty if you have it on low.. (making it chunky looking) dont bother, its only going to hurt you, get someone else to record it on ultra for you (there are lots of people here willing to do it.
an example, take a look at the TD trailer on the front page, it has high graphics on, and it looks NICE, but it only goes to 420p and now looks crapy.. almost killing the point of maken it look nice.
I realize most mappers are just regular people without good hardware or experience in making professionally done trailers, so I do not expect them make visually high quality trailers.
It's not a big deal for me, I watch most sc2mapster trailers unscaled on a 24" 1920x1200 screen. As long they get the gameplay or idea across in the trailer, it's fine by me.
Of course, if it's a trailer that emphasized on visual representation, then I do expect a little better quality.

That was prolly me :P I think i could have outputted 720p, but at this point the videos are recorded and up and I don't really have time to spend re-recording it all and editing it back together in higher res...
And why not watch it in a window if it's 480p? That way it isn't blurred. Sure, it'll be kind of small, but isn't that better than really blurry?
basicly what vexal said, the higher the resolution on my monitors, the smaller the "kind of small" is. and in the case of the TD one... a small viewing of it wasnt such a bad thing, but the catch here is, thats not always the case; usually its to small to see all the neat spells (or tower effects in this case) aka the full potential of the video (and text...lets not even go there)
If you take the time to have a nice video like that, and have nice in game graphics, I full heartedly recommend at least 720p. not just for us viewers, but the better your video is, the better it is for you, you know?
The comp I'm using right now I've actually built specifically for recording and working with 1080p video. I just want to make sure everyone understands that just because you can play at 1080p on Ultra doesn't necessarily mean you can record at that quality. When it comes to Youtube, 720p is still more than enough if that's all you can handle.
But the important thing is that your graphics settings are as high as possible when recording. A trailer is meant to show off what you're presenting (in this case, a Starcraft II map). It has to *look* awesome, and *sound* awesome. If it looks ugly - whether it be from the low resolution, low graphics settings, or uninteresting gameplay video - people will be unimpressed and ultimately show no interest in the map you've made.
As harsh as this may sound, it really doesn't matter what you (the maker of the video) think of the video. The only thing that matters is what the viewers think of it, because they're the ones who watch it in the end. I've received tons of negative/troll feedback on my videos over the years, but instead of ignoring it or telling people to not watch it if they don't like it, I accepted the raw feedback and strive to make my videos better. Now I have a lot of skill and knowledge when it comes to video editing, and a lot more people appreciate the work that I do.
Personally, I think that anything better than 720p is a bit redundant on youtube. 1080p takes a lot longer to stream and doesn't yield that much of a quality improvement (Although that could be because my monitor is 1680x1050). When i record, I tend to record in 720 and whenever I stream (Fridays 7PM CET. Watch it :D) I try to get it to be 720p.
Ive started watching stuff in 360p and not mind - most probably because for some reason 480p is bugged (all i get is green) and every now and then my internet connection slows down for some strange reason and I can't be bothered to wait for the video to load.
About "Ultra or nothing", yes, Low looks terrible. The thing is, Medium shaders is good, you don't need more. I actually dont see the difference between medium, high and ultra, except that medium doesn't show light omnis and other similar effects. Well, thats for shaders at least, texture quality is better at high (but doesnt matter if you dont do 720p cause it's gonna be blurred anyway), ultra is not needed again as you're not gonna be checking whether those two pixels are blurred or not. I, with my wooden comp, can set my Effects, Physics and models to high/ultra without a noticeable FPS drop, so anyone who can record medium or higher shaders can run those on ultra no probs. Terrain above medium is i think only needed if you wanna show off water. Not sure what higher terrains change again... Also, NEVER mix low terrain with medium or higher shaders when there is any creep on the map (check and see if you wanna know what i mean)
Personally, I prefer settings above Low, but know that's not always possible, and 480p or higher is good enough quality. But I can understand that people with those ridiculously high resolutions like 1900xSomething are gonna have more problems with it (I still don't see the point to such huge resolutions... Pixels are small enough already, and you're cramming more into an equally large space? Only thing that does is make everything look smaller and causes lower quality stuff to look even worse imo)
Vexal, for someone going on about high standards, why don't you take some of your own advice and apply it to your attitude because right about now I'd much rather watch a low detail, choppy 240p video than read your whining. Are you here to help the community or whine and complain?
You can make the exact same point in a positive way by simply saying:
"Hey, I know some of you guys out there might not have the hardware to make high resolution trailers and videos, but it would seriously help your game look a lot better if you could find someone else who would let you use their computer to record your video."
Furthermore, if you wanted to really raise the bar on your high standards you could go the extra mile and say:
"Hey, I noticed a few people making trailers really low quality. If you need me to record the trailer for you, I can make it in HD on max detail for you if you'd like, just PM me."
SC2 mapster is supposed to be a resourceful, educational website, not a daycare. Grow up.

I agree that you should'nt offer like only 240 or 360p, but there's nothing wrong if all your video offers is 480p...
