And I am not saying StarBattle is stupid at all. Can you refer me saying that? In fact, I have been playing that game the whole day yesterday and today. And playing this game I just realized that all this time I was wrong. You dont need complex game to have fun. Sometimes the simple one is the best
Assuming there will be updates coming in the future, this is a pretty decent map. Its simplicity has saved it from being too hard for noobs to get into, but there's still plenty of things imbalanced in this map that needs patching.
I do see where you're coming from about the short gap between skilled and unskilled players. A lot of times it'll feel like new players are virtually on the same playing field as an experienced player. Just looking at the surface, its only a ship that has a limited turning radius and a couple imbalanced skills. Anyone can upgrade a couple things and click around while auto-attacking.
But to do the map some justice, I'll briefly list at least 3 things that factor into being "good" at this map:
1) How good are your leadership and team-play skills?
Good leadership and awareness of the whole battlefield, as well as good combos of play are the driving forces for most victories.
2) How well do you understand the mechanics of the ships?
The ships fly/fire in a predictable way, which can be manipulated for defensive or offensive purposes. A good player will rarely perform stupid maneuvers that cause their teammates or themselves to die.
3) How skilled are you with using and timing the use of all the abilities? Or how far do you think ahead in your tactics/mind games?
Sometimes the turning point in a game is decided purely by a single perfectly timed use of an ability. At the very least, the life of a teammate can be saved, or that ship that is about to escape with 100-200 HP will actually die without risking your own life, etc.
With that said, its virtually impossible for a new or unskilled player to beat any decent player 1v1. The gap widens some more 2v2, with some partnerships capable of destroying whole teams of non first-timers. When it gets to 4v4 or higher, the team-play element becomes the dominant deciding factor due to the exponential nature of focus firing. Hence, why some would complain about people "teaming up", but the game mechanics have always favored team play over solo.
There's also a lot more to it than what I've listed; it's just the tip of the iceberg. The depth of gameplay is not something bred into a game, its always been something that the gamers themselves create with their own minds.
The current average game time with decent players is pretty good, it appeals to serious and casual gamers alike. Most people are completely turned off from games that last too long. I'd say this map currently has a great start, but the lack of polished features and terrain elements is severely holding it back.
Apologies for the long post, feel free to skim or skip.
@JimStarluck: Go Its still a "no brainer", the most simplest corridor map (in w3...) is better than that map.
I dont know why he dont put revive system in that map...
That's the point of the map, you're not supposed to come back, and with a bit of teamwork (or an arranged team with vent), you can actually get quite a decent game going.
Some might call that "ruining the game", but those same people have complained about every single multiplayer game in existence that allows teamplay with people using vent.
To everybody who opposed the first post, really? Now, I need some serious explanation about the map Zombie Defence pass above Star Battle. People on the Bnet threads are complaining about this map boring and buggy. I may have to agree of some of you about the Star Battle being that good and its kind of far better than the ZOmbie Defence. But explain to me how the hell Zombie Defence got on top of everything? Dont tell me this is another Youtube campaign boosted map or “the map is fun” thing.
Well, jerberson12 the people that complain about the map don't play the map or played it once. The rest are playing the map because they want to play the map. It is that simple. You shouldn't perceive sc players of people that go on the forums alone. Most players actually don't participate in any forums
Actually, #1 maps are usually 'you got suckered' into maps. Page 1 usually consists of same popular maps people love playing, but one would get up there after a reset. As much as people on the forum love to call b.net players sheep, they do want to join new maps.
So lets see, a page fill of same map + 1 new map. People will join that new map once to try it. As people keep joining to try it, its popularity gets boosted to stay on top. They usually don't return to play tho so #1 maps pretty much always disappear after a reset.
I honestly have no explanation regarding Zombie Defense. There is even a fairly frequent bug that ruins the game (the next wave won't come). This map is worse than Nexus Wars in my opinion...

This game is still in its Infancy. Its continued success will be based on new content and updates.
Will there be other tech routes you can take? Take a defensive tech instead of an offenseive Tech.
Maybe a 3rd base for 4v4v4 matches.. who knows. only time will tell

I concur with everyone else; this map is simple fun and addicting. There is no question to why it is on the top of the list.

Have none of you ever played "Battle Ships" on wc3 before.... its basically that but with a few differences
Im sure the author could take this map over the next couple years and make an amazing game
but seriously the concept is nothing new..... people loved thier "battle ships"
