I check the custom map list everyday like 5 times or more and familiarized all the maps. So I know whos always on page1 page2 page3 etc...
Then one day some guy just posted a thread telling he just released his map and he was even expecting that his map is going to be way down the list. Then I checked the list next day, his map is now on the 1st page. How did that happen? Is Blizzard secretly bumping maps that they only want?
I am sure those maps wasnt there last day, and am talking about two maps that werent on 1st page or even 2nd or 3rd. Then all of a sudden they just showed up on top list. Cmon!
Have you tried playing those map or something? It's either good (mhm rite) or it's badly balanced and people wipe after 5 minutes, and then try again. And then curious people who don't know this map get curious what it is/how it got to the top and play it too.
Or popularity reset and he bumped it with friends, system is bad and it's not something that should be important.
Then the next morning, his map went up to 4000+ games played in one day? Cmon
Even lots of people start playing that below the list , it would not take it one day to bring the map on the top list.
And also i am pretty sure the bnet hasnt been reset for the last 2 weeks, yet
Sometimes maps do rapidly end up high on the popularity list. Ive seen it happen many times on EU. uisadnmb metioned possible reasons.
I know the map has gotten a lot of exposure from vids on youtube(with a lot of views..) and so that could have it helped it too perhaps
Star battle has been a featured map on EU since a day or two, maybe US people found out and wanted to check? And its a pretty decent map so its not surprising it rose up on the list among all those boring auto-spawns and TDs... And its game time isn't very long usually i think.
Yeah was just about to say, Totalbiscuit promoted it on his youtube channel when it was only on EU, then he got it onto the US and he has a shitload of subscribers = loads of views = lots of testers = lots of popularity
Honestly speaking, the map is a no brainer. You just control the ship to where it goes and it shoots enemies automatically around it. Farmville is more complicated than this one. The game ends around 5mins and people play it again coz the map is so simple and easy.
The simplier the map, the more it gets played, as long as the graphics and the visuals looks awesome.
So I conclude, the level of the map maker's ability gets higher(smarter), the more he makes complicated maps, the less popularity.
The less the map maker's ability , the more he makes no brainer maps, the more the popularity.
Or maybe I should say the team who made this is rich....etc...etc...etc...
You never tried unlocking any of the abilities or upgrading your ship much, did you? There's a whole hell of a lot more to it than that. Try *actually* playing it a few times rather than just glancing over it and dismissing it as a "no brainer".
@JimStarluck: Go
Its still a "no brainer", the most simplest corridor map (in w3...) is better than that map.
I dont know why he dont put revive system in that map...
ive seen alot of random maps every now and then just shoot straight to the top out of no where, they stay there for a bit, then die off within a week or 2 . cause the replay value is low. With this starbattlemap, it seems to be aimed fully at taken advantage of the pop system. If u die you cant play anymore and quick games. Its a decent map , but how it shot to number 1 is confusing . I think blizzard does do a lil messing around with the custom game maps, For e.g Ive seen 2 resets so far that were highly questionable on what was going on with the Storm of imperial sanctum map . Such as it would be in the bottom of the list almost deliberately after a reset despite the fact its probably the most popular map (considering its size /game length) . No amount of plays was able to bump it up, then after like 7 hrs,it seemed almost as if blizzard released the lock then it rockets back up to first page. Ive seen that happen twice with that map. One time they did it players actually thought it was removed from battlenet and was asking for the map on the forums. Point is i believe blizzard does influence the custom game list from time to time. I wouldnt be surprised if this map did get a small amount of help from blizz.
All you guys shooting down the map are going to be proven wrong. This game is great. I'm willing to bet it will stay above SotIS permanently (assuming author continues updating). Even more laughable are the attempts to discredit the author's ability; that just shows ignorance. What will determine the future success is the nature of updates (will more depth and content be added), and the establishment (or not) of a website and community. The initial release is certainly not a fluke, but we'll have to see if it can be maintained.
@Karawasa: Go
The fact is that it was going down on popularity (around page 2-3) on EU when it got featured. However it might stay on the top if he will make it even more imbalanced so games will took even less time.
What I learn indeed from this map is that there is no need for fancy/overcreative map or games. KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid... Star Battle even give auto attack. very playable with mouse only, no micromanagement needed. The gap between newbie and pro is bridged, everyone loves the game. This is one of the reason games like Call of Duty is so popular even with repetitive bashing from haters. StarCraft 2 on the other hand is not so popular. Only 3 Million copies SC2 in 1 month vs CoD 11M copies in 5 days lolz... This is because RTS is a bit complex, not everyone can enjoy it. Without Custom Game/Mod SC2 alone won't be as popular
I'm not really sure why everybody keeps saying "there's no gap between newbies and pros on the map". There most definitely is, and saying otherwise just shows you haven't truly played it. There's cooler maps out there, sure, but Star Battle isn't as stupid as people are making it out to be. It's basically an AoS, but it's the new edge that makes it interesting - it is really hard to die, and the period of "oh god I am dying" can last up to a full minute. This does however not mean there is "no micromanagement needed". Sure, it's easy to 'farm money', but you need some damn good teamplay, steady positioning and a specific set of upgrades to actually take enemy players down.
I am not saying there is no gap. I am saying the gap is bridged, narrowed. In this game you rarely see a wipeout clear win within 7-10 mins of the game. Unlike SC2 Ladder where Diamond can pretty much wipe out Bronze player quickly. Because the learning curve is not steep. Yes finding out what to upgrade, when to retreat, when to teleport will make a difference between pro and newbie but then if you compare that kind of strat vs SC2 strat, it is no comparison.
In SC2 you have to scout, you have to look at supply, expand, protect expansion, anticipate drop, anticipate cheese, anticipate where enemy will expand, do forcefield, guardian shield, micro dying unit. and MANY MORE!
You see what I mean? I am not saying there is no gap. But however good you are at games like Star Battle, it wouldn't that stand out.

What was the map called out of curiosity. Also do you have a link to this thread?
It's very possible if he'd been planning it for a while, he mass hosted his map with friends a couple hundred times?
I am talking about the "Star Battle". I am pretty sure that map wasnt on the first 4 pages of the NA list.
This was his post 1 day ago.
"Hello, The Star Battle map is now available on NA battle.net. Be sure to check "show new only", press Show More only about 10 times and enjoy! "

Without even knowing the full extend of what this is about I just want to delight in the opportunity for some righteous sarcasm.

I dont think Blizz would secretly bump a map.

The map was super popular on EU before, reviewed by Total Biscuit a few days ago, and generally good. (check the news I should put it up already now

You realize his or whoever made the youtube videos have almost 90k views? That's alot of people to go test the map and bump it up.
Also I love the way death = death. When someone dies there very likely to go join another game straight away :)
Pretty sure that youtube guy who does wow commentary did a review on this map on the EU server. It got like 200k views or something in a day or so.
Yeah was just about to say, Totalbiscuit promoted it on his youtube channel when it was only on EU, then he got it onto the US and he has a shitload of subscribers = loads of views = lots of testers = lots of popularity
