This week, our WTE will be based on idea from scbroodsc2 (aka 'Fenix'). With the theme of "Unorthodox Bridges", the idea is that you guys create a bridge (over a canyon, ravine, river or what-have-you) without using standard bridge doodads. Anything that looks like a bridge on its own should not be used. As a hint, note that you can use all sorts of doodads like benches, ground props or even tree trunks to create your own bridges.
This weekly one actually applies to a terrain I started today so here is what I was working on.
The idea behind this one was more of a "Gate to the afterlife" since I recently played Darksiders 2. There is also two versions because I messed with the lighting and couldn't decide which one I liked more.
@Mozared, Still waiting on that actual terrain contest/competition...
The rocks was fairly simple after timing it right it's just that those bastards float around all the time... And here is the map for the lighting and other things if you want.
I do quite like that bridge, but I do think that 'ravine' should continue where you've created the 'lower but still visible ground'. It feels like you wanted to add something original to your canyon, but I think your originality has cost you a bit too much realism here; when I saw that low ground I immediately thought to myself "why would anyone go through the trouble of building such an elaborate bridge in that deep cliff if they could've just built it on the low ground there?".
@Mozared, Still waiting on that actual terrain contest/competition...
We discussed it in the mod forums and in the end decided not to have one just yet. We do all like the idea (since we haven't had a straight up terraining contest before), but we simply didn't have anything worthwhile to give out as a price. That said, with HOTS beta coming up, I think I can reveal to you guys that we're cooking up something big that doesn't only include terraining when it comes to contests...
Hmm does it have to be a literal bridge or could it be any way of bridging a gap? I've not started on anything yet, and don't know if I'll be able to enter this week but I was wondering if for example something like a cable car bridge would count?
And after an absence from the wte, here is the bridge that I created. I didn't finish the cliffs but I am proud of the bridge. Thought id toss in a night shot for the sake of why not :) .
Actually, Mozared, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS HAPPEN HERE. I was making a beautiful but standard bridge, and then I decided to do some other stuff, and it was getting late, and I placed a shitty national monument sign that actually wants you to hunt down a Korean, and then I decided it was a lost cause. I edited it, even though it looks horrible now and I don't want to share pics.
The neon lights really do make that bridge just that much better. Curious tho what your using for the strut; looks like some type of stretched temple doodad
So, despite my questions I went with something completely different x)
At this point I've only really got the bridge done (and even that needs some work) and have no ideas at this point for the surrounding area.
Concerning the map itself, if I never see another Shakuras Hex Column again it'll be too soon.. sooo many columns x(
But I digress, I had a mental image of a bridge 'held up' by giant Protoss statues, hopefully that comes across. Originally I was going to go for an older, more templey look but couldn't find the right doodads to fit so instead I switched to Shakuras stuff (Don't ask me why Dark Templar would build statues of Protoss with nerve tails)
I'm a bit under the weather this week so I don't know if I'll be able to work more on it, but I wanted to show what I had done :)
Weekly Terraining Exercise #95
Bonjour!
Good luck, let's see what we'll get!

Since Bel'Shir is probably the best terrain (excluding Cyrogen and Gehenna) released so far, I made a bridge for it.
Behold... Giant's Walkway, National Monument!
WAIT WAIT WAIT... TREE TRUNKS!!1! Where where where are they!?
This weekly one actually applies to a terrain I started today so here is what I was working on.
The idea behind this one was more of a "Gate to the afterlife" since I recently played Darksiders 2. There is also two versions because I messed with the lighting and couldn't decide which one I liked more.
@Mozared, Still waiting on that actual terrain contest/competition...
Edit: Added two new ones with a different skybox.

How'd you make the background floating islands good sir? And what are those light beams?

I like the lighting on the last pic. I feel that we make better terrains after we feel inspired from an epic game like darkeners lol

I'd say a proverbial bridge could be called 'unorthodox'...
this is more time consuming than i initially thought lol, finding all the correct doodads that you want to use takes up the most time.
And after an absence from the wte, here is the bridge that I created. I didn't finish the cliffs but I am proud of the bridge. Thought id toss in a night shot for the sake of why not :) .

Woah what is that thats pretty sick.

Joecab, can you post your map (again)? :)

Thanks, I will post the map after school so that will be about 8-10 hours for SGT.
Edit: and here is is 9 hours and 12 minutes later :D .

This doesn't really "feel" complete, but here it is anyways.
This has to be one of my favourite WTE's... so far I've really liked all submissions. So much cool and original stuff!
