After some searching, I couldn't find anything about this so I hope someone has some answers. :)
Is there a way to allow building except without actually having a worker unit?
For example, I am working on a map that would work out a lot better if the player was allowed to build straight from a set menu while excluding a worker unit. So basically, just a straight up menu, no units, but still able to construct buildings...
So... I was creating a "hero" scv on a whim a few days ago.. and noticed that the ability for a worker unit to build is just an ability.. probably similar to any other ability, so.. you might be able to create a building off in the corner of the map and give it the ability to build.. although I don't know how you would work out having the footprint drop without the correct proximity...
I'm sure there's a much less "sloppy" way to do this, but...
You can try to make a unit dummy unit. Give him the look of a tree or invisible to the players, make him unable to move, invulnerable to damage. Also give him the portrait of an adjutant :P
Then give him the build ability you want, give it a range larger than the map, customize his ability command card to make it look like it's not a unit.
Finally use a trigger that whenever the player uses the 'b' button for example, it selects the unit.
I'm sure there's a much simpler way than this though...
Edit: lycist beat me to it :P yes you can make it a building also ^_^
Sweet, been messing around with it, I think this might work. :)
Gave it a different model (Agria Crops) and it's basically hidden since it doesn't show up on the map.
One thing I've been trying to do is make it so that the unit is automatically selected upon map start up because right now I have to hit idle worker to be able to being building. There any way to do this?
Also, Preda, just out of curiosity, how did you give the construction of buildings unlimited range? Because going to the Abilities tab and changing the Range field of the actual build ability didn't seem to change anything for me.
It can't be unlimited. You have to make it big enough so that it can reach all the map.
Changing the range should do it...
Maybe the unit you're using has a different ability than the one you're altering?
Edit: Also there a small error in my map. You have to deselect the units of the player first then select the building unit.
Build
Events
UI - Player 1 presses B key Down with shift Allow, control Allow, alt Allow
Local Variables
Conditions
Actions
Unit Selection - Deselect (Selected units for player 1) for player 1
Unit Selection - Select SCV [15.80, 19.67] for player 1
Use gateway warp in with a nice mother ship warp in effect. I can teach you how if you want to learn. We can sit down 1 on 1 and I will show you how to do everything related to it. Just PM Me.
Hey there,

I'd love to help...but i'm not very good with triggers. Maybe able to be done through the data editor, but i don't know. :/ Bumpin to help.
hey, I think this is actually my first post ;)

something to look into maybe?

Ah, thanks for the suggestions, I didn't even think of that!
I'll definitely give it a try and post back with the results later on today. =]
@fumoffu_fmp:
Here's a map for reference:

make a trigger, event "map initialization" Action" select unit X for player X.
Make a keyboard shortcut for it :)
Hey I have a tutorial that can be reconstructed easily. Just try it the way I made it first, then try it your way.

Hey nelsencaleb
the link is broken. =[Also, Preda, just out of curiosity, how did you give the construction of buildings unlimited range? Because going to the Abilities tab and changing the Range field of the actual build ability didn't seem to change anything for me.
