I had been suggested by vjeux recently that for the nicer maps out there, well, they all have a video showing off their features/artwork and I should do the same. That being said, I find myself at a loss as to how to go about starting to make a video, or tech demo per say. I wanted to make a tech/detail demo of my Emerald Dream and Soulfire maps.
I guess my main questions are:
-What main programs are recommended for recording? Are there free versions?
-Are there any recommended editing programs for the videos?
-What is involved with uploading? Is it a matter of upload -> point to file - > done?
Those sort of basic questions. Of course if there is someone bored who is talented, please send me a PM. But in either case I feel it would be nice to kind of give a nudge in the right direction.
@irninja:
not program"s" bro, program, there is just one that I can think of.
Recording Software: FRAPS. its all u will ever need.
Editing Software: Adobe premiere or Sony vegas (vegas is better in some ways, it uploads directly to youtube).
There are also others.
Uploading: Smaller than 1 GB, go to Upload button on youtube OR upload selected region (like loop region for playback) directly to youtube with vegas.
if u need more info just hollar
I'm curious too. I did a video in Fraps, turned out decent quality. I uploaded it to youtube and it completely thrashed the quality. How do people make their maps look so great on youtube. (High definition and such)
@Aenigma:
you have to adjust the settings, youtube likes 600x480 i believe,
a lot of videos are suggesting compression. try saving it as a WMV, then uploading it
regarding recording:
there are a few programs out there, personally i prefer fraps as its easy to use and high quality
for editing:
adobe premiere / adobe after effects / sony vegas.... hell you can even use windows movie maker if you wish, it doesnt matter if your just gunna upload a map preview to youtube
for compression:
if you wish to compress in the program you've edited in, choose the .mov container and the .h264 encoding. if you want youtube HD make sure your resolution is 1280x720
however if you wish to do 'easy mode' this is how.
after you have edited your video save as an AVI with no compression, or if you wish to upload directly from the fraps capture
take your uncompressed AVI and plug it into this program
Generally all formats can reach the same quality - of course the quality of the source material (so your recording) is the absolute maximum.
Formats (or codexes - whatever the plural of codec is) are used to bring down the HUGE source material to an acceptable size. The less file size you want the more quality you will lose. Now there's the difference.
An MPEG codec (that is usually a movie with the ending .avi) needs to sacrifice more quality to get a low file size than a x264 codec (usually with the .mkv ending) would need.
But the x264 codec needs a lot more CPU power to encode or play the movie. MPEG codecs are much more friendly to weak computers. Especially when you have a video with a high resolution (like 1280 or 1920 pixels width).
Nowadays most computers can handle x264 videos of the resolution how they're used in youtube etc. Youtube turns them into flv anyway, but that's a different story.
My choice is definitely: x264 (matroska) and not the old stuff.
Ok heres the update. I have fraps working. Works wonderfully btw, im on 3 monitors so i had a bit of an issue to have it record the 3rd monitor, (it was recording my battlefield game at first, instead of starcraft lol). And the video it takes is awesome. 1920x1200 resolution.
Heres the issue. I downloaded and am using AVS Video Editor, and when it exports the "project" to an avi. The video ends up extremely grainy and much, much lower resolution.
Ill try windows movie maker now, to see if it has a better effect. Ill keep you posted.
(just noticed the video can now be viewed in 720, last night is could not,..... good thing?)
Yea videos get uploaded to youtube as fast as they can, but the time isn't enough for them to reprocess the entire video (especially with longer ones). So initially you only have a low quality version of it. Once the reprocessing is done 720p is automatically enabled if your video supports that.

if its 600x480 how do they claim "hd" on some videos?
wrong! *hah* :P you want "Debut" which works just as fine, but is for free and doesnt have this "fraps" watermarking at the top of the screen!
you need to record your screen in a higher resolution, then its hd...
@irninja: Go
they wouldnt claim HD as that wouldnt be HD :)

hit encode and your laughing.
Starting on those now, just got home from work. Thanks so much.
Quick question: Does one format prove to be better quality than others? What format do you use? avi?
@irninja: Go

The Dominion needs your help: http://us.starcraft2.com/dominion/

Ok, made a video. And its taking its time encoding. Will try and work with youtube in a bit to create an account and upload. :)
→ Would probably help to click and have it expanded, but im speaking out of place, not knowing much about it yet. heh.
First youtube video :P
I use Virtual Dub with Xvid MPEG-4 Codec. The quality is great and the file-size is minimal.
It looks like that in 720p: Which is great (recorded in low settings ingame). If you are lucky you may even have 1080p from youtube.
So you use fraps. then bring it to virtual dub, and export as xvid.
Can i get similar quality exporting as something in windows movie makers (would make it a lot easier, seeing as the whole project is in there)
And thanks vjeux for expanding my horizon here.
(just noticed the video can now be viewed in 720, last night is could not,..... good thing?)

Is there a way to make your youtube video default to 720? instead of the lower resolution.
