Options/Option List

Warcraft: Dark Crusade Options

The following lists all options available in Dark Crusade through the custom Campaign Launcher.  If you wish to retain as close to classic as possible, follow the classic suggestions or click the "classic all" button.  If you wish to retain as close to modern warcraft3 as possible, follow the modern suggestions or click the "modern all" button.  If you wish to retain the default mix for optimal gameplay experience, click the "default" button.

Game Speed

(Classic = Normal)

(Modern = Normal)

(Default= Normal)

Toggles the gameplay speed rate.  Default is "Normal" and this would be about what Warcraft 3 is played at.  Moving to Faster may be too speedy for most players.

Dialog Speed

(Classic = Normal)

(Modern = Normal)

(Default= Normal)

Toggles the story-mode dialog speed rate.  This options is only used if "Story Mode" is active.  At the moment, all WCDC story mode cutscenes have no audio, as Warcraft 1 and 2 did not have cutscenes in-game.  By setting this to Normal, all dialog is presented at a normal paced reading rate.  Faster and Slower options will change the rate at which dialog is displayed based on the length of the dialog text.   If Normal is too slow or fast for you, feel free to change this toggle to your appropriate reading rate.

Difficulty Level

(Classic = Normal)

(Modern = Hard)

(Default= Normal)

Toggles the difficulty level.  Default is "Normal" which is at or a tad harder than the original Warcraft 1 and 2 gameplay.  Hard level would be an extra step up from the original campaigns and Brutal would far exceed the original difficulty.  Hard and Brutal specifically can include the enemy AI having pre-learned upgrades and abilities at game start, spawning extra starting units, spawning attack waves off-screen, having your starting resources or units/buildings be reduced, etc.  Although the SC2 game style should make handling your army far easier than classic Warcraft, it is still recommended most players start at Normal and if too easy move up to Hard.  Brutal should only be attempted once you've mastered the levels on Hard.

Music Preference

(Classic = War2 Only)

(Modern = War3 Only)

(Default= War2 Only)

Toggles the type of music played during gameplay.  The options include:

  • Classic Warcraft 2 (Only plays War2 soundtracks using OST)
  • Classic Warcraft 2 w/Warcraft 1 MIDI (Only Plays War2 soundtracks in Episode 3->6.  Episodes 1 and 2 will play original Warcraft music using MIDI)
  • Classic Warcraft 2 w/Warcraft 1 SB (Only Plays War2 soundtracks in Episode 3->6.  Episodes 1 and 2 will play original Warcraft music using Sound Blaster)
  • Modern Warcraft 3 (Only plays the modern War3 soundtracks)
  • Both Classic and Modern (Will play randomly both War2 and War3 soundtracks)
  • Everything! (Will play randomly any War1, War2, or War3 soundtracks)

Hero Mode

(Classic = Off)

(Modern = On)

(Default= On)

Toggles hero mode on or off.  If enabled, gameplay is drastically changed.  You will be presented with playable heroes that can level up, acquire items, learn abilities, etc via the Warcraft 3 hero system.  These heroes can carry their exp and items mission to mission, as available per plot or story mode.  Because hero availability can change based on story, it is recommended story mode also be activated if hero mode is activated.  In addition, hero mode will enable creeps spread out across the mission.  Creeps follow similar patterns to Warcraft3 where they may drop items on death, sleep at night (if time cycle is enabled), and remain within their respected encampments.  Note that creeps have no allegiance and may also attack the enemy if approached.  Hero Mode may also contain increased difficulty regardless of Difficulty Level chosen to balance fairness (More spawned units, enemy heroes, etc).   Finally, hero mode has another significant liability; your hero can die.  There are no resurrected heroes.  Although they are extremely powerful compared to normal units, if they die, its game over.  Choose wisely.

Story Mode

(Classic = Off)

(Modern = On)

(Default= On)

Toggles story mode on or off.  Story mode will present the player with pre-mission and post-mission cutscenes, with occasional mid-mission cutscenes where appropriate.  These cutscenes will tell a deeper story throughout your missions that the original War1/2 briefings did not cover.  Although all dialog is original, the context of which is based on standard canon Warcraft history lore.  All cutscenes can be skipped over at will even if this mode is enabled by pressing the ESC key.  If Story Mode is enabled but Hero Mode is not, you will see heroes during the mission but they will not be available to play.  The pre-FMV briefings from classic Warcraft will always display before a mission and is not impacted by Story Mode (these FMV briefings can also be skipped by pressing the ESC key).

Extra Abilities/Upgrades

(Classic = Off)

(Modern = On)

(Default= On)

Toggles if extra abilities and upgrades are available or not.  Classic Warcraft 1 and 2 had very few upgrades available to units and only a handful of spells to learn.  By enabling this, you will be able to research unique upgrades, abilities, and spells for nearly every unit available in the game, which further enhances gameplay between human and orc.  Be wary however, the enemy can also learn these extra abilities if enabled!

War1 Tech

(Classic = Off)

(Modern = On)

(Default= On)

Turns Warcraft 1 technology on or off during Warcraft 2 campaigns.  When enabled, you will be able to build some unique Warcraft 1 units and structures that were previously not available in Warcraft 2.  These include: Clerics, Conjurors, Mystic Tower(Tower), Necrolytes, Warlocks, Dark Tower(Tower).  If enabled, the enemy may also possess these technologies against you.

War2 Tech

(Classic = Off)

(Modern = On)

(Default= On)

Turns Warcraft 2 technology on or off during Warcraft 1 campaigns.  When enabled, you will be able to build some unique Warcraft 2 units and structures that were previously not available in Warcraft 1.  Due to story and lore constraints, these are very limited but currently include: Scout Towers, Guard Towers, Cannon Towers, Watch Towers, Upgraded Watch Towers, and Boulder Towers (Orc Cannon Towers).

Classic Stats

(Classic = On)

(Modern = Off)

(Default= Off)

Enables or Disables using classic stats.  When enabled, most Human and Orc units and buildings will mirror each others health, armor, damage, etc as per classic.  Spells will remain unique, as well any unique upgrades/abilities if so enabled.  For the exact damage calculation formulas, please refer to Human/Orc core data stat pages.  When left disabled by default, Human and Orc units and buildings will have slightly varying stats.  Humans tend to have heartier defenses and faster speeds whereas Orcs tend to have stronger offenses and higher health stats.  Build costs also can vary between units and buildings.  Please refer to the Human/Orc core data stat pages for details.

Classic Armor

(Classic = On)

(Modern = Off)

(Default= On)

Enables or Disables classic armor.  When enabled, all units and buildings will receive equal damage percentages at 100%, reduced by armor.  When disabled, units will retain some Warcraft 3 armor types, such as Normal Attacks dealing extra damage to Medium Armor, or Magic attacks dealing extra damage to Heavy Armor.  When enabled, attack types become null as all will do 100% damage (as if they were all Chaos type).

Classic Voices

(Classic = On)

(Modern = Off)

(Default= On)

Enables or Disables using classic voices.  When enabled, all units will use their Warcraft 2 counterparts for unit voices when selected or orders given.  When disabled, units will use a Warcraft 3 voice instead.

Classic Sounds

(Classic = On)

(Modern = Off)

(Default= On)

Enables or Disables using classic sounds.  When enabled, all sound effects such as buildings, attacks, spells, explosions, etc will use their Warcraft 2 counterparts.  When disabled, these effects will use a standard Warcraft 3 sound instead.

War1 Voices

(Classic = On)

(Modern = Off)

(Default= Off)

Enables or Disables using warcraft 1 voices.  When enabled, during Episodes 1 and 2, all units will use the same voice, per classic.  This has no effect in Episodes 3+

War3 Filler

(Classic = Off)

(Modern = On)

(Default= On)

Enables or Disables using a warcraft 3 sound/voice filler.  When enabled, certain voices and sounds that have either no classic sound/voice, will use a unique Warcraft 3 sound (example: Town Hall being clicked on).  To retain a truly classic experience, leave disabled.

Profile Tips

(Classic = Off)

(Modern = On)

(Default= On)

Enables or Disables using profile tips.  When enabled, you will receive periodic popups in-game about new units, new heroes, new upgrades, and new locales.  If you do not care about this, leave disabled.

War1 Models

(Classic = On)

(Modern = Off)

(Default= Off)

Enables or Disables using custom war 1 3d models.  When enabled, some buildings and units may use a custom fan-created model such as a classic Human Lumber Mill or a classic Orc Farm, inspired from Warcraft 1.  This option has no effect in Episodes 3+

Time Cycle

(Classic = Off)

(Modern = On)

(Default= On)

Enables or Disables the time cycle.  When enabled, you will see the day/night warcraft 3 cycle at the top of your gameplay hud.  In similar fashion to Warcraft 3, when it is nighttime, the area may turn dark, your units sight reduced, and creeps (if hero mode is enabled), may sleep.

Weather

(Classic = Off)

(Modern = On)

(Default= On)

Enables or Disables using weather effects.  When enabled, gameplay and cutscenes may have ambient weather effects such as wind, rain, snow, etc.  If you are experiencing gameplay slowness, you may wish to leave disabled.
