hello, just posting in here to ask are we allowed to submit more than one entry ? one of my ideas seems to already have been used before :p but I spent a good amount of time learning how to do it so would still like to submit it.
I have to say that I'm very impressed with the submissions I've seen so far. I wouldn't know how to do half of the stuff you guys are doing. Hopefully no one will steal my idea before I get my map released :)
Really simplistic, but that's how I like it.
Its a clock based out of the Energy, Shield, and Life stats of a Zerg Egg. This could easily be modified to become a countdown timer on a bomb.
I'm currently trying to figure out if I can change the name of the stats.
It's got a slew of features. Figure them out when you play the map; it's more interesting to do things than read a wall of text, anyway.
Essentially, it's a sundial. The shallow semicircle of lights that are laid out in the shadow's path light up at the appropriate time to mark off the hours. I don't bother adding minutes or seconds because getting the hours to sync up with the lighting system was an absolute bitch. It may not work right if you don't play on the fastest game speed, too. Apparently, it worked out (through trial and error) that I had to put the day length as 126.5 seconds, and the seconds per hour as 4.4 (24 hours in a day, mind you). This makes absolutely no sense, but for some insane reason it works out that way in the engine. Keep in mind that 4.4 times 24 is 105.6... yeah...
List of features in no order:
Zerg air units fly overhead, leaving shadows on the ground as they fly by, sometimes passing through the camera's field of view.
There are three cameras that are randomly used (and can change every 24 hours); put your graphics settings on ultra for full effect, since I use some DoF.
A realistic day/night lighting system. The only thing that isn't simulated is moon lighting, which requires a second full-scene shadow, which I'm not sure is possible.
The sundial shadow traces out the path of the time.
Along the path of the shadow are glowing markers placed at hour intervals.
The glowing markers change color depending on the time, synced with the shadow's path. A small explosion effect happens when each hour is marked off. The day and night colors are different, too.
There is a doodad-spam terrain surrounding the main area, which is a crater-like place with a 10-story protoss sundial in the center.
The water rises and recedes in an exaggerated tidal movement. The high point is high noon.
At midnight, there's a flash and a large explosion at some random part in the crater, leaving a permanent scorch mark. This essentially tallies off the days as they go by.
Oh, just a minor detail that took me the vast majority of the time to do right: a random set of ghostly units appear off-screen and charge toward the crater to do battle. One army is terran and the other protoss. The army size and quality increases every successive night. The units are unselectable, unhighlightable, etc, and are transparent and tinted, and pulsate lightly. Some of their projectiles and ammo units are given the same conditions. At day, or when they die from combat, they explode in a light puff of smoke that scales to the unit's size and height.
A spiral of lights ticks off the minutes. At each hour, the spiral intersects with the hour marker and the sundial shadow.
In other words, I just added crap until I felt I could call it a day.
Edit: tiny update and screenshots...
Edit2: large update and a screenshot
Ok, here's my map. It's basically a digital clock with a marquee-style billboard.
It uses a simple glyphing technique that I have not seen before in Galaxy or WorldEdit. Apart from that it is rather minimalistic and straightforward. There are no UI customizations, but a few settings can be changed by writing commands in the chat.
Also, this is my very first map in Galaxy, so any feedback you may have would be much appreciated.
Is a digital clock powered by a fusion reactor. However... all goes terribly wrong at the reactor.
There is a good dash of humor instilled in this map and underneath the humor it is heavily triggered with lots of math.
The battlecruiser orbits using trigonometry, not a path of precreated points.
The humor is at :13, :45, and 1:23, so don't miss it!
The clock runs at 1440 seconds / game day.
Note: I do not know how it looks under the lighting, my computer does not support lighting or shaders so I really can't say how it is going to look under lighting >_>
Edit: Re-uploaded map because I forgot to put in a map name and description... and again to fix a few glitches that I couldn't see while playing the map windowed.
My clock is analog and digital, it creates units in a circle and units as the hands. If you don't like to wait (or like to wait), press up arrow key and down arrow key for faster/slower speed.
Yeah, here is my clock.
Its a digital clock where the digits are made out of units. If a digit changes, the old one gets killed and the new digit takes its place. The time is not counted in seconds but in Infestor Rounds. Each time the Infestor walks a complete round, a minute is added to the clock (one minute in this map is faster than a real minute).
The colon is created by a sentry which periodically casts force fields.
The time can be changed by entering the wanted time as a chat message with the format: "hh:mm".
I dont know if the text shows up right as ive created the map with the enGB editor version.
This is a Doomsday Clock, made with a cool vortex of times being sucked in, and when the time reaches zero, the poor marine gets it! I mostly did this for learning, and a diversion from my map, it was fun to make =)
There is heavy use of text tag triggers, and i've commented on a lot of triggers as well. I tried to make it as easy as i could so that anyone can copy the triggers and follow the instructions to use it in their map.
I spent a lot of time on this so please enjoy!
The embeded youtube isn't working for me (oh, thanks vjeux!),
so be sure to see it in action here:
- With permission, the Death kill at the end courtesy of Hybred, and a few of his triggers, thanks!
The contest is a great success, there are 18 entries! You can elect multiple entries so don't be afraid to do so :) The winner will be the entry with the highest vote count.
Since there are a lot more entries than expected, the votes are going to stay open for 3 days, ie it will end on tuesday night.
Because of technical difficulties (we can't have more 10 choices on a poll), we did 2 polls. In order to make things fair between the 2 threads, results will be normalized. Let say the second poll have less votes, all the entries of the second poll will be multiplied by (total votes of poll 1) / (total votes of poll 2). This way if there are 2 times more votes on poll 1, the poll 2 entries will be multiplied by 2.
Yeah without any problem :)
I gotta give a lot of credit to bifuu for his lighting tutorial. thx man. anyway heres my Sundial.
Edit: I updated the sundial to include Cowboy Dan and some triggers just for fun :P

UPDATE: New version with a couple more things

Only one more day to submit maps :)

Here is my entry, the Nukekoo clock. It is like a Cuckoo except instead of a chirping bird, it launches a nuke. The clock is running at 20x speed.

Attaching image for entries that did not provide one.

But I don't really care for winning or anything, I was just making it for fun.
It's a bit buggy anyway.
The contest is now over!
Thanks a lot for all those who participated, all your maps are really impressive! You should all get your rewards shortly (within 1-2 days max).
There has been a total of 267 votes (150 + 117), here are the results normalized (factor for the 10-19 = 150/117 = 1.2820...)
All the following: 1-month Curse Premium
Congrats DarkRevenantX :)
