Hello Everyone. First of all, if i don't follow any rules of this forum by creating this thread, pls lock/delete it.
ORPG Project
This is a very ambitious project i've started to work on. Currently we are 15 at this and haven't made it very far. ( Only made some terrain and the interface of the hero inventory/levels. I've worked lots with WC3 editor and SC:BW editor so i know the basics. It's hard to get around with a new interface on the editor at the moment but ill get into it. So this project is about a giant Open Role Playing Game where the biggest aspects is:
No main story line, but very many quests you can do, and each of them has it's own "dialog" and story.
Different Classes/Races
Save and Load capabilities
Unique enviroments and enemies
Player Housing ( Hardest thing to get, but probably worth it.)
Items such as weapons, armor, boots, etc
Multiplayer game with as much players implemented as possible.
Items like weapons and armor should be seen. for example, a marine with a sniper, or a dark templar with the armor of a zealot. ( Probably the hardest, so i set this as a secondary focus if we get this up and running )
Current Facts about the map:
At the moment i am doing a game with the medieval setting, just with the usual units and structures ( 3d converting is way to big for now, maybe if the team gets large, 30 people or so. :P ) Going for some converting.
Im thinkin of 3 races..
So there should be 1 large city, with all races, 2-3 villages and the rest is neutral area. there is some rooms for you to build at, and there is quests all over. Some Hermits are to be placed around the world to give quests. There are shops were you can buy and sell things.
In the beginning you start on a small area in the corner of the map, there you choose race and class. I't should be very hard to get to the big city in the beginning. so you have to do alot of quests and level up abit before you can enter it.
When you load the game you start of in the nearest city. And all the items, other things you have ( except the cities youve builded ) are saved.
I think i've covered the biggest aspects here. If i get enough people, and we realy make this, we can hopefully make it in third person later on. ( big risk thou ). Another dream thing would be to loot enemies to get items, for example: Zerglings tooth + 2 Zealot breatplate = Spiked Chainmail. Create at blacksmith.
Progress:
Loads of people working at the moment. It's going good.
Updates:
Currently looking for: All help is welcome, i gladly take anything you can help me with, aswell as design thoughts, critics and ofcourse if you want to join.
Stay tuned people, cuz there will be updates :)
Having a giant forum.
15-17 members. All working hard.
Feel free to question anything you want to know about, ill be most happy to answer them.
Hey im at work, if you could get some screen shots up on the forums id greatly appreciate it. I'd be interested in terrain-ing, I can come up with some concept terrain for you.
Honestly im not sure if the city building is going to be a great idea, it sounds like it would require multi-player sessions to devote a huge amount of time to get a city going. Most people will leave a map after an hour or so, i would try to keep in mind a playtime of roughly 30 minutes to an hour per session of your map.
Item combination is a great idea! I've been thinking of the same thing for an envorinmental survival map (using flint and wood to create fires to keep warm, combining wood and stone to create a spear for hunting etc etc.) Sadly its only in concept phase since I have absolutely no skill in triggering or programming.
If you played the WC3 map Troll Tribes they had the item combination implemented. Id realy love that too!
About the housing... ah well, ofcourse you could change it with the Item combining and focus alot more on the items. Also if you have a day and night cycle you could set up a tent in the woods and create a fireplace to warm yourself. instead of housing that is.
Edit: got some screens uploaded. Still, not even close to done with the enviroments, but i'm not a great designer so. I usualy keep the hook on people and get them working :)
Unfortunately I have no idea how to do nifty trigger and programming stuff like that, i stick to a paintbrush. :x
I know i played a map like that in WC3 where you built huts and fires and stuff and just tried to survive longer than the other players, it was pretty awesome. I think you could even learn new 'crafting' skills and recipes. That might be something to look into doing.
A day and night cycle wouldn't be too hard to implement. Are you thinking of dropping the default UI altogether, in favor of something like a skill bar and skill book, and inventory bags etc. I've seen it in Tech demos on you tube etc.
If you have time send me a PM here on the forums with what you're looking for in terms of different map areas. I see you have a lava area, i guess an island area, )kinda like zeldas "a link to the past" hyrule castle)..lol
I can sketch something up while im at work being bored and browsing forums. Yay for being in the army with nothing to do. >.<
If you are talking about player housing, thats a really awesome idea. ^.^ Being able to customize your house with different loot you get from bosses, or 'achievements' and what not. It may be a bit more abitious than being able to build your own small city/village, but it'll make people come back to your map time and time again to show off their 'phat lewtz' haha
I would gladly help testing the map and help with whatever i can help with that doesnt require too much map making skills
However, i wonder if i missed it, but is it EU or US localized?
I could help with Testing/Creative assistance if you need. I also can understand some Basic/Certain Intermediate triggers as well. (Depends on what would actually be considered Basic/Intermediate) (Testing as far as if your in US)
I loved ORPGs from WC3 and ran a clan just for them for a short time. I might be able to join and help with triggering/ui as coding is my focus, but I'm not sure at the moment how much time I can dedicate as classes will start up later this month and I'm unsure how much extra time I'll have. I'd have to wait till the end of the month to let you know.
Anyways, the only issue that comings to mind with player housing might be the amount of data needing stored compared to the size of the house.
The way I'd see it would be to have a set size area that the player house gets spawned in. This could be in a set location or may placeable. Then the player that owns the house could bring up a menu or be able to drop items to place them inside (perhaps like buildings/doodads). Then when a player loads their house data would be loaded from the bank or a separate bank if you want and the items placed inside would be spawned based on their stored locations.
I'm almost always on my computer if I'm not sleeping, so if you wanta hit me with a message feel free too. Just mention who you are.
The player housing would be sick... but i'm afraid i have so little skill in triggering. Thats why i need a crew. Still learning thou O.o
Edit: Liked the idea, changed the player building to housing instead. Like your thoughts ^_^
I'm putting housing in my map "The Desert Station" and the concept seems pretty easy. You just need to make somewhere that is not viewable regularly (somewhere that the camera bounds don't show), and a house model to use. Just have your house have a region at the door and a point inside the place your using as your house, and make a trigger: When "Any Unit" enters "Region 001" (or whatever you named it) (this is for the event) Move "Triggering Unit" to "Point 001" (or whatever you named it) (this is for the action). You will also need to make it two way as well as when the unit enters the region then you would have to change the camera bounds with triggers.
As for making houses customizable, I have the concept done, but it will be a little more tricky. Anyways, hope this helped.
the map looks kinda small right now. What i remember from wc3 is that ppl would make different terrain types to make each area seem different and instead of making one mostly flat and open map, they would make lots of pathways that twist around in a single region (kind of like how intestines are bunched up inside our torso). I found that maps that did this kind of thing seemed a lot bigger than it really was. Of course, it kinda made it super linear and plus its gotta be kind of hard to build cities in small pathways. Perhaps if some areas had different terrain types and twisting path ways and were isolated from the rest of the open map and were home to like harder mobs or something? Cuz you know, in every RPG one of the main things is beating up rabbits, getting bored, exploring, getting ass kicked by a giant, beat up more rabbits, and revenge on giant.
You know wat, i see you already kind of did that... forget wat i said.
I'm back. I apologize for my late respond, but i've been gone for 4 days and are happy to see that people actualy want to help me and give me new ideas etc.
First, I'm located at EU, but when the map is done we could spread it through the US aswell.
And i've been going around with some third person triggering, but i don't think it would be that great in the RPG.
For the terrain, Ã have a guy working on it, hopefully he will come out with something realy nice. :)
EDIT: A BIG NOTE, is that i add you as a temporary member of my team. But you can leave whenever you feel and ofcourse if you don't want it to be seen ill take it away.
We are now 8 members of my team. We realy need people who can trigger and make custom UI.
The terrain is being worked on. The first Hero knight is being merged. But we need people with knowledge of triggering.
Me myself is currently workin on exporting this "knight" into the 3ds max to attach a shield and a sword to him. I may even be making some other things to import to the editor like item chests and other things.
This is going very good so far. But we still need more people. All help is welcome.
Edit: also been doing a small backstory of the world.
I'm a fair hand at coding; I'm not professional, but I'm pretty decent and I work hard to keep things organized and well commented so if someone else has to come in and work on something they don't have to go through the whole system. Just learning the triggering system here, but it's pretty easy as far as I can see. I'd be happy to help get you started, and if it turns out I'm not good enough, you should have a well commented skeleton to hand off to the next guy.
Nicely put, I too would consider the same, that is I think the idea of working on an ORPG would be fun, though I do have to say I am working on a couple small projects and so not only am I not the best coder as the guy above me said, but I might not have the time that I think I will. But if you would like some help at least getting started, then great. If so you can PM me here, or for faster responses email at Dtime35@gmail, which is also my gtalk name.
I'm a little behind catching this post it looks like, but I'd love to jump into this project as well and be a big contributor for whatever needs done. I've been playing in the editor since I got the game a few days after it was released, about 2-5 hours a day almost every day. I'm still no-where as knowledgeable as I'd like to be but I'm getting a decent idea of how things work. I played in the wc3 editor and broodwars a tiny bit but I never released anything. I also have 3d studio max and with a little bit of a nudge from someone else that knows how to export I think I could help with creating custom items/characters. I'm not the best modeler but this is certainly one way to get better at that as well. I'll be happy to contribute any way I can, coming up with ideas for quests as well as quest rewards/placement etc. would be kinda fun too. For now I hope I can join and see where things are at and jump in as soon as possible! =)

Yea <3 3d modelers!!!
Just as a FYI there is no exporter as of yet, but if you wanted to create models, I know we could use some.
