I recently finished my first yr of college, and I'm shooting for a BS in computer science. My father is a computer networker/analyst so the love for computers and computer games only comes natural. I've been a young musician for 5 or so years. I bought my first acoustic guitar about a month ago, and I love it. I started playing around with the wc3 editor a few years ago off and on. My reason for editing wc3 and sc2 is to gain a tad bit of experience to help myself towards a CS degree.
I'm studing electrical engineering. Here in Spain it's called "IngenierĂa Industrial" and it's more of a general purpose engineering, as it also involves mechanical, electronics, power and chemical engineering. When you reach the third course, you can choose a specialization, and in my case I chose the electrical one.
I have always liked mapping, since I was very young. I've been mapping in games such as Tzar, Imperium, Ragnarok Online and Starcraft II. I worked as a scripter and mapper in Ragnarok Online for about 5 years, and I also worked for some private Ragnarok servers. Last year I quited RO since I was getting bored of it. I used to like Warcraft III custom maps, so I decided to give Starcraft II a try for mapping. Since then I've been developing my map CoreFight.
I make maps just because I like it. I like being creative, to develope my own ideas and features and add them to the game genres I use to play.
From what I can see I'm quite "unique" if it comes to education path. I'm a student... of medicine :) And I map because I can and enjoy it. Triggers are fun!
Currently I wait for August. Then my I will begin my subject-relevant-high-school-graduation in one year (most known as "Fach-Abitur" in german) Wikipedia-link
That graduation is only a requirement to get to the university in the vicinity to study game design.
I've started with making games/maps with age of 10 or earlier (I don't know exactly). But the "why" manifests with age of 17. I was bored from school and I began to draw something. (It was a manga) Not very good, but I liked it and I began to think more and more about this stuff. And more and more I get a whole story which can be turned into over 12 books (the first is already completed written).
After this last year of school I've started a apprenticeship as a technical draftsman and I hated it. Always the same stuff. Before that I don't know what the fuck to do. I've lacked of ideas for the future and in the apprenticeship I began to realize that my hobby is a well paied job if I can get a bachelor degree or higher.
And, of course, that is that what I want to do.
I only started making melee maps last year I was a student studying socilogy. And building something that people can enjoy and experience was my first instinct, which lead to alot of pretty maps with poor function for SC2. But after I learned the rules and how important standard is, It became more about, engineering something that people would respond to and have the oppertunity to step out the box a little more when applying tactics.
Now I am attempting to build my first UMS so I can make up the rules a bit and see if all the things I think would be cool are actually cool.
My personal goal would be to build the next WoW, the bar is a bit high i know, but building a world where a society can form in ways I cant predict would seriously make my day.
I am in Customer Service for an online game...and I hate it. Dealing with these people's entitlement complexes and inexorable ties to virtual identities and pixels is enough to make a person go crazy. This is why my biggest project is to come up with an MMO where the game play/world is the center focus of the game, not your character.
I've been making games for as long as I can remember, way back when, I was drawing dungeons and weapons for pen and paper games. I made some maps on the SC1 editor and had a great time. One of my goals in life is to be able to play a game I made. The Galaxy Editor allows me to do that on my own time, at my own pace, as I want to do it.
I get lost in making games. I can sit in front of the Galaxy Editor or 3DS Max for hours on end and forget I'm hungry, even forget to go to the bathroom. I sit in front of spreadsheets calculating data tables and working out formulas for long periods of time and never even know where it went. This is how I know I should be doing this for a living, now I just need someone to pay me for it.
I'm a biologist, currently going through a master degree in order to be a specialized ictiologist. I'm 27 years old and I always liked to mess with game files and change what I could. I'm a map maker because I like hobbies that make me think and have new ideas, as well as trying to make them work.
So yeah, I'm in the minority of old guys around, as well as in the minority of people who work with something unrelated to computers or technology.
