The Larva contains the DNA codes for all Zerg species, including buildings. Hence, the Larva must have come first. It's the very basic start. It's like saying "Which came first, Bacteria or Man?"
I want to play along but I can't come up with good reasons T_T
I say Hatchery since it creates the larva so that means it must contain the DNA code for the larva which gives the larva the DNA for all Zerg species. In short Larva don't have larva DNA code.
The question doesn't specify the circumstances surrounding their appearance, so I'm gunna say hatchery because that's what all Zerg start with in a melee game! ^.^ (I'm gunna say that the hatchery nurtured the drones that come with it, and hence the hatchery was first).
Zerg was a parasite that attached to other living creatures. Not larva. Larva live on their own, sort of, compared the the original parasite zerg was. The more I think about it the more I'm sure, the hatchery came first now. The parasite probably took over some super basic xel naga stuff and that turned into the hatchery to create the larva which would make the drones and everything else.
To those that say the overmind came first I don't think so. Wasn't he put in power by the xel naga to control the zerg? Either way the overmind was brought to power after there was a zerg colony.
I think the drone came first, the parasite that controlled things prob first went onto a little creature that had the potential to morph into structures and snagged one of them. Altered into what we know as the drone.
lore : larva came 1st zel gaga did somthing made theendmind who controled larva (larva came 1st theendmind was larva) he made them mutate into hatchery (i belive that larva are supposed to go direct into hatch (or just mutate into drone and than instantly go hatch)) the hatchery spawned larva at 6 drones they spawned lings and defeated all the netrual animals on the planet. the 1st win of the zerg.
how can it be a larva that comes first?
hatch -> larva -> drone -> hatch -> larva.... notice something? It has all the DNA, yes, but inherited by what?
Nothing or everything came first.

that is just mele games not lore >.> they were just random stupid un evolved larva before xel naga let them evolve into buildings and clonize and stuf... (see my other post)
I read it. It's definitely the larva that came first.
That's like a Chicken's manual stating: "The egg came first" :D
Manuals make such philosophical things much easier.
In terms of melee game:
I think the overlord was first, carried in the drones, who made the hatch, which made the larvae.
The overlord and drones came from a hatchery far far away.
Overall, i'd say larva. Theyre the most basic form of zerg and the start of all zerg life cycles. plus, imagine the Xel naga:
"Hey dood, lets create a race!"
"Awesome idea bro. Lets make a building first!"
"Lolwut? No, brah, we first need a damn basic thing. I mean, we didnt make the pylon and then the protoss, right? We let the protoss make the pylon. Lets just make a larva which can evolve into other stuff depending on its situation."
"and that stuff evolves into a building, right?"
"Fine, they can evolve into buildings as well... But no way am i living in those."
And yea, in melee, id go with s3rius and say ovie.
None of them came first. By the process of descent with modification the modern zerg units evolved from primitive versions of themselves, going back to monocellular organisms which likely reproduced via cell division.
Seriously don't they teach science anymore?

Question for discussion.

Well I say Drone, as the drone mutates into the hatchery. And as such, must have the DNA of all the other Zerg spcies.
(Actually I said Larva, just wanted to go full circle with that)
@Wolf1322: Go
did no one read the sc1 handbook? original zerg were essentially larva before xel naga did stuff to them
@PirateArcade | I make games | Ask me things on Discord
Wouldn't the overmind have come before all these?

Yeah. It goes
Overmind Larva Drone Hatchery
And then the larva/drone/hatch cycle renews itself.
Unless the Overmind was a larva once. Then its larva above all else.

drone/hatchery/larva ^_^
I don't know if any of you actually play melee but when you begin the game, you start with the hatchery.
@rrowland: Go
And drones and larva.
Larva for sure
