War-hammer Vs. Blizzard RTS
okay here's what I understand
Warcraft Defense
Humans
To me this means that The use of humans is no different then using a Cat or a dog in your game... ITS NOT STOLEN YOU NOOB!!!
Orc
So an orc is a creature made up in the 1700s
Starcraft
in the start of the Starcraft omnibus, Chris Metzen says that Starcraft was originally going to be a STARWARS game, not a warhammer one.
Space Marine
So space marine was WAY BEFORE war-hammer aswell? AMAZING!!!! another Warhammer fanboy put down in the dirt and stomped on.
The defense rest, Trolls, Elves Ogres, Knights, Turtles, Dwarves, and Goblins are well known to take place in Greek Mythology. and during the Dark ages.
Warhammers Accusations
No real evidence Other then that blizzard tried to buy the rights to warhammer. And even this is only something I have been told and i cant find proof of anywhere on the internet.
Final words
Warhammer sucks... Tis true. thats my opinion though, I just dont like their community or their games. they are to me something I would play to wait for the next blizzard RTS.
As far as Games go, Blizzard beat the Warhammer series on dates of release usually by one or two years. Warhammer stole the idea from blizzard to make a medieval fantasy RTS game. but blizzard made one better. and then the space RTS once again blizzards was better, but there was another RTS that was a space RTS I forget what it was called.
If I have Misread or Missed anything that can be proven on a legitimate website on the internet PLEASE post a link.. But honestly this whole blizzard stole this or that is bull shit, None of these Creatures were exactly Original in the first place by anyone for over 100 years lol.
Rumors
There you go, I just gave your thread a point.
@Mozared: Go
Very amusing.
I like Relic RTS (Homeworld, Company of Heroes... the Warhammer ones were fun too) more than Blizzard RTS.... wait, what is this thread about?!
This thread is a look at mostly facts, about if Blizzard stole from Warhammer.
I think the whole space marine thing was based on how Marines and Space Marines look pretty much identical, not the names.
Then there's things like the Tyranids and the Zerg and stuff. Not really worth arguing about in my opinion but never mind. The Dawn of War warhammer games are fantastic though.
Hadn't realised people accused Blizzard of ripping off fantasy warhammer with warcraft, its all just pretty much generic fantasy from both side.
OMG! Blizzard stole Warhammer design! They used WH units in SC2! :D :D :D
@iWaNN: Go
Those look like Very poor prototypes lol.
I think the main complains lie in how the WH Fantasy/40K orks and the Warcraft Orcs resemble too much each other.
Also, Protoss are a Tau/Eldar ripoff.
Bye.

Wahh? i only see a minor resemblance for the protoss, Lol, In one the only similarity is they can be blue.. in the other one its just a longated skull, nothing else is the same.
as for the orcs, there are alot of similarities, Green, Tusk, Barbarians
And I did some research just now, and the Orcs that blizzard would have copied looked nothing alike, Since Warhammer didnt have a game that wasnt a board game .
I see very little resemblance, I would actually have to say that Blizzard made their orc, and then warhammer kind of copied a little bit of the art style, they used the Word orc first, but blizzard made the actual races looks.
The only real thing you're doing is looking at accusations people often throw at Blizzard and give your own opinion. Opinions are not facts.
Actually I've never heard the accusation that Blizzard "stole" ideas for Warcraft I. I've only heard such things about Starcraft.
It's really hard to find actual intel about the topic, because neither Games Workshop nor Blizzard officially said much about this.
I've found the following on TVTropes.org:
I couldn't find more info about the "starcraft omnibus". Maybe someone else can enlighten me?
Here's another lengthy feature about the subject: Link
And someone actually asked a GW dude about it:
Fun fact:
However, Warhammer:40k, Alien and Starship Troopers were iconic of the science fiction space genre that I'm sure Blizzard has drawn ideas and inspiration from them. Like many others did. And that's not a bad thing. They didn't blatantly copy but evolved the ideas into something else. That's how humans do it since the dawn of time: We copy, learn and improve.

(if you don't have the patience, skip to 3:15)
It shows how incredibly much the original Star Wars movie copied from other sources. Still - wasn't that one of the greatest movies ever made?
Alright thanks Ill add what you found in the appropriate sections, i just put that meme fanboy rant under warhammer because its all I hear with no proof.
If its true that blizzard had talked to Warhammer guys about making a Warhammer game, then I say that Warhammer stole the idea to make a video game from blizzard :D lol
EW!!!, i found one of the Space Marine board peices look at this, it has very little looks compared to the BLizzard marines, in Sc1, remember this is all Warhammer 40k had before their game that came a year after Starcraft 1
Of course this could be because of Early development and concept art
THough I have to say that Blizzard based their games on the Warhammer SETTING but nothing was really stolen, but that could be because of pre development.
The reason for my earlier post was to point out this thread has no point. Warcraft and Starcraft are based on ridiculously common concepts in western society that aren't AT ALL hard to think off. It's similar to Sc2Mapster's Mapcraft vs TeamLiquid's Mapcraft. The reason I was never fussed by their show's name is because let's face it: "Mapcraft" is a name anyone who plays StarCraft could come up with. I don't think TL 'stole' our name, they just came to the same name when thinking things through.
It's the same story here. Warcraft's Orcs are based on mythological Orcs from writings from 18th century romanticists, who in turn based their Orcs on writings of 7-12th century monks who had copied old Roman stories who in turn 'stole' their Orcs from the ancient Greek society. And I doubt they 'originally' came up with it either. The reason these "X stole Y from Z" debates are pointless when it comes to simple mythological creatures is because all of these things are literally centuries old, and it's all a ripoff anyway.
I find starcraft marines boring and ugly (tuchiys was kinda cool though).
but warhammer space marines are so badass with all those chainsaw swords and guns!
Good to know you are comparing a miniature model, which has to be scaled down both in features and quality. At least pick up codex art or smth.

@zenx1: Go Agreed, case in point:
@Mozared: Go
To be fair, WH and WC orc(k)s anatomy is too close to comfort (green skin, prominent jaws, gorilloid facial features, etc). Lore wise they are insanely far from each other, but there was clearly a notable inspiration (in a good way, mind you).

I'm not trying to bash warhammer, not until I get a chance to actually play it other then Spacemarine, which sucks...
Im just saying that blizzard was original enough to where its not even a ripoff, Thats all.
@Alevice: Go
Also, I just looked for Board peices that warcraft and starcraft would have been based off of, The ones from the 1980s.
I Didnt even realize they had the books, dont know what year they came out though.
Edit: Checked the years on those books, all came out AFTER warcraft and starcraft Except 3 books, in which none of them had any art pertaining to anyhting remotely relevent, EXCEPT the wolf riders idea, Though this idea could have been formed in the 18th century as alot of the others.
So the Current Space Marine style, large plates, yadda yadda came out after.
Though in all honesty it doesnt matter, its the gameplay and graphics that matter. :D
and I cant comment on warhammer games EXCEPT space marine... which kinda sucks. its like a6.5 or 7/10
The ones I linked to were realsed in 1998.

You are truly the wisest man on this side of the earth. Nothing else to do about this post than to agree with it.
