So i've asked a LOT of questions the past 2 weeks in the IRC for this site, and i wanted to show WHY. So here's the link to the video I made of my demo's 1st draft. I need feedback on this so i can revise it. So feel free to watch/critique :)
P.S. first video i've made and bad memory, so sorry for repeating myself.
P.P.S. my voice suddenly gets a lot quieter about 20 seconds in, and the program for some reason makes the floor blotchy when the camera turns, but this was the best framerate by far. feel free to suggest another program (No torrentz)
Enjoy :)
EDIT: Please if you give feedback, leave it here, rather than on the video page
well, i'm 15, and no, dont have any programming experience, though, the way triggers work in GE, it wasn't too hard. If you get the file on here, you'll see that most of it is just a bunchhhh of triggers
Because there are 0 public DS engines, Galaxy Editor is easy, and if i get stuck I have all you lovely people to help me
Yeah, I was aware the gameplay would be kinda lacking. Anything about it in particular you would change? The original idea way back when was that enemies would be more like an obstacle and youd stealth your way through, but i don't really see that being fun. Maybe I'm wrong? Or perhaps neither that nor direct combat like the demo are good ideas, in which case, what do yall think? :)
In a year, there are always changes :3
Although to be fair, that engine seems to only handle 3D rendering and no physics/controls. That might built into DS APIs, haven't bothered to try (Not that I could test anything, no R4 Chip).
Well, like i said, i'm still a kid, and game-design is my fall-back plan. I'm a musician :) So I won't be attempting a full-fledged home-brew game. But i have a lot of friends in several small game companies, and am an intern for one of them, so I'm gonna try to revise this demo, make a better video, and try to pitch this to a company. Thanks for the engine advice tho :) I'll check again on occasion. I would be absolutely stunned to play this on an actual DS. I'm hoping that with the 3DS coming out soon, I'll be able to pitch this for that. The buttons are mostly the same anyway :P
I game program in C++ when I'm bored (college student right now). I'm currently working on rewriting a vertical shooter from scratch for the 4th time (I get stuck in an obsession for optimization where I don't need it and never make any progress).
I'd watch your video, but I don't have flash right now - I just reinstalled minefield - and I'm too lazy to get it.
I'm not a fan of the drawing or the DS components but this is a very cool idea nonetheless. Reminds me of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem on the Gamecube.
I don't really understand. Are you making a first draft of your game on Galaxy Editor before porting it to DS? Because it is obviously done in the Galaxy Editor and I doubt it runs on DS ...
I think it's more of a proof of concept, demo, and/or compromise. He can't program a DS game because he doesn't have the skills and resources, so he's making a similar game using the Galaxy Editor.
@Aenigma, I've never played/heard of that :/ But I'm glad you like the idea :)
@Grogian, sounds awesome! I'm a drummer, though I play concert percussion as well. Usually in the state youth orchestra, school jazz band, school praise band, school marching/concert band, honor bands, all that nice stuff :P And trying to find people to start a rock band with. But yeah, if I do end up goin to college for games, I deffinately want to be either an idea guy (designer?) or learn programming.
For the past 4 or 5 years a few guys from Austin put on summer-camps and taught kids how the industry works. I was one of the veterans :P But that's where this idea was born. They taught me the basics of 3d modeling (3ds max) but that's toooo freaking hard, and not fun at all. I want to enjoy what i do when i get older
EDIT: I made 3 forum threads for the map, please take a moment to post if it's no bother! They're just "what did you like?" "what did you not like?" and "General feedback/What was your first impression?". Feel free to still post feedback and comments here as well :) http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/somnium/forum/
Eternal Darkness was a game where you ran around with an 'Sanity Meter' which depleted when you were spotted by enemies, etc. As it depleted your character began going crazy and you would see insects, hear footsteps, start walking on the ceiling, seeing things. It even tried to feel like you were going crazy by lowering the volume, saying the controller wasn't plugged in or by restarting and telling you all your save game files had been deleted.
oh thats cool! ^^ although the volume, controller, and save file things would reeally make me mad . . .
Edit: OH! And i STILL need a 3d modeler. If anyone would be interested, please let me know. Also if anyone happens to have random models (with textures, without animations) of anything that could make that terrain look more like a house, please let me know :) Thank you
bump! I kinda took a break after finishing the first draft, but am talking with several people right now, and have been lately, have a list of things to do for the 2nd draft, and several GREAT idea's i completely forgot :)
I still need a 3d modeler! If this demo is finished by october 1st (i dont see why it wouldnt be) i will be entering it in the Indie Game Challenge! So PLEASE, if you are interested, post here or PM me! And all feedback is still welcome :)
I'm not gonna reveal much of the new stuff to come yet (except to anyone who wants to help work on it) but I will say that the combat is going to drastically improve and add to the unique...ness of the game

Do you have any programming experience or are you not actually planning on making this game for DS?
Also why would you make a game demo for a touch screen device on a platform that doesn't even support mouse hover support?
Gameplay to me seems kinda Meh, but I don't usually like this kind of thing. Not to bad for just diving in though.

THANKS TO EVERYONE IN ADVANCE
@ctccromer: Go
Did you even look for DS Engine?
http://www.qj.net/qjnet/nintendo-ds/ds-homebrew-nitro-engine-v050.html
GE is definitely easier to use and has a bigger audience however. Best of luck.
grogian: i did look, though it was over a year ago. Although i figured there wouldnt have been any changes

Care to give feedback on the 1st draft?
*Totally Excited for 3DS*

Also: What do you play, music-wise?

Made for very cool/interesting gameplay.
