Hey all!
I was going to put this in the tutorial thread, but I figured it might be the wrong place so I put it here. Anyway, my apologies if I've misplaced this thread.
I'm new to the SC2 mapping world, so as the title says, I desperately need help.
I have the idea to create a 1 - 4 player survival map (cliche?). A player (and his/her allies) would start as an SCV with a basic amount of minerals.
The starting area would be a cliffed platform with one ramp for the zerg units to attack. As a source for mineral income, there would be 4x5 normal mineral nodes (limited to a small amount of minerals per node) in the corners of the platform. The platform has one barricaded path leading to another platform (with another ramp) wich provides more minerals, and maybe even technology upgrades. That platform could have another way leading to things like rich minerals or extra verspene. The barricades can be opened by paying an X amount of minerals. I think those who have played the "Nazi Zombies" minigame in CoD5 know where I'm talking about.
After a X amount of time, the first wave of zerg units rush up the ramp, and ofcourse, more waves will follow. The waves may only consist out of ground units. These units can be fought and warded with (Terran) ground units. I don't want the buildings to be able to lift off the ground, because they could just fly away off the map and ignore the zerg units. The map has to be unbeatable. When all minerals and guess on the map are gone, it's up to the players how long they can survive.
I'm looking for some very basic advice on how to tackle this challenge. Like how to make people spawn as an SCV with an X amount of minerals. How to pay minerals to clear a barricade. How to make zerg units spawn in waves, etc.
Second; to make a map, there are three basic 'areas of expertise' you'll be required to work in; you'll need terrain, data editing and trigger editing. Terrain is straightforward, data editing creates the units you want to use and triggers accomplish things like spawning units in waves. What I suggest you do is go to the tutorials section and look up some basic tutorials on all three subjects. At most this'll cost you an hour or so, and you'll be able to produce a decent map from there. Once you've got the basic knowledge set, you can come back to us with any follow-up questions.
Alternatively, check out the VOD section on www.livestream.com/Sc2Streamster. We have near-daily shows about all different subjects up there, and watching some of these can give you a decent introduction to subjects like this. I suggest you start with a newbie wednesday.
Hope you enjoy your stay, good luck with your map :)

First of all, welcome to mapster!

@Mozared: Go
I think your back to basics thing would be pretty good for going over terrain, which is where you probably should start.
@Mozared
I guess I'll be spending my time on reading the tutorial section ;).
Thanks for the info. Really appreciate it.
