And that is why everyone should try to at least avoid creating DotA-ish maps for SC2; this is IceFrog and Valve, how more epic can that be?. Cant wait for this one. Also, I wonder how LoL and HoN will react?
I'd hate to be the guy who originally made dota and then stopped and now regrets it as icefrog and countless other people 'tear it up'. lol. no pun intended.
Edit: By original I mean very very original when it was absolute garbage.
Anyone else think it's lame that they're doing an exact remake?
Yeah, but hey, I'm sure they're thinking about that too. Did they mention something about you see the items that your hero has equipped (ex. having a Radiance makes your character glow gold or something)? If so that would be really really impressive.

That'd be Guinsoo, and he's with LoL. Although there was, before him, the RoC original by Eul (now with HoN).
Surely this comes under making a profit from something Blizzard owns (they do own everything you create in the map editor).
I could understand if they'd changed the name and such but if it's a direct sequel to the wc3 map then surely they are just setting themselves up for legal issues.
I think Valve have already copyrighted the name "Dota". They are not taking anything that belongs to Blizzard though. The Dota concept is just that, a concept, used in countless other stand-alone clones.
Its really unfair to Eul and Guinsoo for Valve to be doing this under the name Dota 2.
Well, while the name doesn't make much sense to me either (since it's just dota with a new engine), it kinda serves them right for not grabbing the name first.

This is not true, not even for starcraft with it's outrageous EULA, thus it can't apply for warcraft.
Whatever you make, YOU own. That is the constitution (in like 99% of countries), so no license agreement of any kind can change that. (Like if there was a agreement that blizzard has right to end your life if they want to, it wouldn't apply for the same reason)
Try making a profit off something you make with the editor that isn't a donation. See what happens.
That is something slightly different - if you make a map and charge players for playing it, you also charge them for using starcraft, and that you can't. However if you create a RPG wth good story and someone wants to buy the story and write a book of it, you can do that. And the same goes for systems - you can sell your map system/idea to anyone (the EULA "just" says that blizzard can sell your ideas, too)
I never played Warcraft 3 or DotA so I guess I don't really get the appeal... but I did try SotIS for SC2 and I had no idea what I was doing.
This is probably a gross reduction but am I to understand its like Desert Strike (for those of you who have played it) + heroes/items? Because I like Desert Strike. :)
Anyway if Valve is giving it a face lift, I'd try it. :)
I really don't know what to think of the whole situation. At the end of the day, if they release it and it's an amazing game that's all that matters, but i'm a bit offput by the major game companies releasing sequel after sequel. Am I a bit disappointed it's a straight up conversion of the original? Yes.

Icefrog never had any original idea, so I guess this is the best way to make profit.
I bet it will be really unpopular. I might say this, because I never liked that map.D

More Dota :P we have enought I think. I prefer lol but if they make dota 2 any good I will at least try it out.
Why call it DOTA 2 when it's a remake?

What we need is someone to make a better AoS altogether in SC2 :p
Well I'm working on a 3-way one :P Though it's mostly for the lulz, dunno if it'll actually turn out good.
By the way, why should we even care about this here in the SC2 community? I mean it's a standalone game developed by Valve.
Is this even legal?

Well I hope ice Frog at least trys to re-invent alot of mechanics and the heroes/items. HoN already is a complete copy of Dota.
Quite lame that its sounding like an exact remake (HoN already did that), and that they took the Dota name. I expected a reinvention
