I disagree.Every time I log on Battle.net, I get messages from at least 5 people yelling at me.I can't even get on to play with my friends.I do not have issues (at least not in this context), so fuck off.
You just 'fuck off'ed me when all I was trying to do was give advice, so without trying to troll here, I beg to differ.
That said, I didn't know (or even could know) it was so bad that you've got people harassing you whenever you log in. Sounds like you do have a bit of a problem there. I've seen the phenomenom you're talking about - there's plenty of maps where people just outright leave if they even suspect you're new to it. Have you considered simply taking your map down? You can republish it later if you so please, and at least it's a punch back at those spoiling your fun.
honestly. I think the add friend system in battle.net is stupid... you shouldn't be able to just add anyone and everyone... the other person should have to accept it. This would solve a lot of people flaming each other, especially after league games. Do you know how many times I have been yelled at by a sore loser.... and I am not even good....
Vexal raises a good point. Anyone who makes a popular map can find it impossible to get a few minutes of peace and quiet on Battle.net. I often will sign onto EU just to get away from people PMing me.
Not only that, but a lot of people seem to think I'm God's greatest gift to Earth, and while that's flattering, it gets annoying when people treat you like a celebrity. It's hard to sign on and just play your own map for fun with everyone sucking up.
My map is nowhere near the popular definition with just 440 bookmarks, but I get spammed with the "omg y u no change this" crap every once in a while so I know how annoying that can be. I just play with my Busy status on, enjoy my clean screen and tell people inbetween games that Battle.net is the only place where I do not discuss about map balance.
while it luckily doesn't happen for me, even with 2k+ bookmarks, I can highly understand this. doesn't DND protect you from getting spammed while playing? and don't open the email acc for a while
oh yeah! every time I join battle.net there is someone inviting me to play Debates.......... oh god.... I get PMed all the time, specially for icjug with people all the time asking me to fix that or not allow spawn in close positions, etc.
Why should I take it down?I said "fuck off" because you responded based on your assumptions of what's "normal".You have no idea what is important to me.Instead, you apply your own definition and assume I have issues.
I just realized I did that in my first post.Ignore that.
I responded based on what I knew from the OP. It sounded like you got a couple of angry mails over an in-map April fool's joke and got all riled up about that. I honestly can't blame you if mapping is so important to you (we all have our interests and I'll be the last person to judge), but the advice was that the opinions of random strangers shouldn't matter - if they do, then you 'have issues' because of the simple fact that you're going to be hurt in life a buttload. A couple of e-mails can simply be deleted - the story changed when you revealed that you've got multiple people harassing you every time you log in.
Why you should take it down; well, at this point, isn't the question more "why would you leave it up?". Like you pointed out, it's your map, you decide what to do with it. If the community that has cathered to it is so full if pissheads that they harass you over a simple April fool's joke, why not display some justice and remove your map completely? That'll serve as a good reminder of where exactly their rights are and what they can and cannot do to you as a creator. The only reason I see why you'd leave the map up is because you want to (obviously) 'show off your hard work' and get some fulfillment of having people actually play the map, but if it seems so clear that the majority of the people playing your map are assholes who do not care for an author's right and think they're allowed to harass him after a simple change in the map, then do you really still get that satisfaction?
Edit: Someone mentioned earlier that taking down the map would only cause more harassment. Sure, but it would give you the satisfaction of simply getting back at all of those people. You can have a simple "Why I took down the map? Because people started harassing me personally after the April Fools joke" under control+C and paste it to whoever comes up to bug you, if you can be arsed. You might even educate some people.
and, for the record, i find your TD very fun. i also find insulting people very fun. i found the april fools joke splendidly fun. i found the rage born from it exquisitely fun.
i also had a lot of fun playing your TD with you last night trying out new builds. in my opinion, the game is fun again. the strategy has changed and i like being able to build some "old" towers again.
you made a team TD. honestly, what did you expect? people on the internet to get along?
your new project should be to turn that webserver you made into a turrin e-mail responder for your TD e-mail account.
in retrospect, maybe i shouldn't have suggested you make an april fools joke in the map. but then again, i'm a evil jerk. that's actually my first and last name: Evil Jerk.
As for "why would I want to leave it up?"My hope is that eventually, the map will be high enough quality that it will develop a community I like. Also, like I said, it's my chance to be creative. When I think of a new idea, I can just add it to the map, and thousands of players instantly see my new idea. There aren't very many other ways I can do that.
Hmm, sure, but you could always republish it? Obviously it's your choice, but the reason I mentioned it it because it is probably what I would do in your situation - just taking it down for a week or so.
As for the difference between online and offline, I refer to the Internet Fuckwad Theory (note that ED is kind of NSFW, though that page isn't too bad). We could get into a psychological debate, but if you know what's good for you, you should at least try to acknowledge that there's a difference between how people act online and offline. It makes it easier to shrug off the bad and embrace the good.
If you do an april fools edition of your map, make sure the jokes don't interefere with the gameplay. I think that's fairly obvious. You can be funny without frustrating people.
lol I always believed in that theory but I never really had a good name for it. Until now :D
People + Internet = Jerks
Its why youtube is filled to the top with crap...People flaming each other and arguing over completely pointless stuff with more swearing than actual debate.
Come to think of it...This community is relatively amazing. Theres very little pointless arguing...

It's cause we're working for the same goals - to make great maps for the rest of the community. So we have a purpose, and a reason not to flame each other. Another reason is because Mapster still seems like a relatively small community. There aren't exactly any trolls here. Not yet anyways, from what I've seen.
You should be proud people are talking about your map, it doesn't matter what they talk about. If you don't want feedback, don't have your email on the loading screen. Also, you could do what I did in Debates: I added a tip called F.A.Q. with all the questions people keep asking me. That reduced the complaints in 80%.
For questions you don't have an answer, use Blizzard's method by saying "I will think about that for future updates." It works for every question. The "soon" also works.
If you get angry or take people getting angry about changes to your map personally, you have issues.
That is all.
I think you should post the e-mail.
Vexal always had issues.
Gimme ur e-mail. I want to join the fun! :) I love to annoy people that can be easily irritated.
@Vexal: Go
I believe Eiviyn was referring to the essay-length email rants you claim to have received
@PirateArcade | I make games | Ask me things on Discord
Yeah Id like to see the emails as well.
But I have to agree with vexal, if people are really saying such things to him about his own map... I fear for humanity (more so than I already did)

wouldn't that cause more hatemail?

Think custom gaming can't get any worse?
April fools mother f*ckers.

90% of the time, people assume I am in the editor and not actually online. As this is true 90% of the time, they are making a safe assumption!
