"Now announcing the First Diplo Sc2 Mapping contest!
The contest is running from the second you read this until Oct. 31st. ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE SENT TO BOTH GRUNTY1 AND BALEDWYR BY THE END OF OCT 31st...EST.
The object is to make a fully playable strategy map in the next month and a half. We're looking for functionality, creativity (bonus points for LoC maps), and effort put in.
There will be a grand prize of $50 for the winner. If you're 18+ this will be handled through paypal, or if you're under 18 I will mail you a check.
There may be a 2nd and 3rd place prize depending on the number of entrants, so encourage all your mapping friends to sign up to create more chances of winning!"
Please Note: I am not the contest creator, if you have any questions, please post them on www.diplomunion.com, or you can send a PM or E-Mail to Baledwyr or Grunty1, there contact information is also on the forums. Thank you!
Good luck, those that decide to join!
(Sorry Admins if this is in the wrong section, if you would kindly move it to the right one if its in the wrong one, I would appreciate it very much!)
Neat concept, but the reality is a unique new map can take dozens if not hundreds of hours of planning and development. The conversion to hourly pay out is pretty abysmal for 50$.
What are your contest's rules concerning what happens to the map in terms of ownership or anything of that sort? In order words what does the site intend to do with these maps and where can I find the full details of such things in writing? (and if there isn't such a document, there should be)
I am not the contest owner, just the distributor of the progaganda relating to it.
Any futher questions can be asked on www.diplomunion.com, someone affiliated with the contest will be sure to respond to you as soon as possible. Alternativley, you can send a PM, or E-Mail to either Baledwyr or Grunty1, there contact information is also on www.diplomunion.com
Don't quote me on it, but I believe the map maker will remain 'ownership' of the map, the only thing your doing is creating the map, and sending it to them to play, they will then rate it, and prizes will be given out in that manner.
Basically, LoC is the lore of www.diplomunion.com,
We started off as Wc3 centered forum, but now were basically anything that you can think of, as such we have a bunch of Clans/Groups that like to Roleplay. Any such groups can enter the 'Land of Conscienca', which looks something like this:
As an example, if you look to the middle, thats my clan, originally on Wc3 called GoTE (Guardians of the Empire), it is now called Gotennia in LoC, which is basically a huge Roleplay'ed universe. And like any Roleplayers, we love to play our maps. If you think you would be up to the challenge of trying to create one, then you would basically earn our respect in eternity. There is a TON of Lore to go through, although Grunty and Baledwyr would be sure to help you, that being said, the task would still be hard.
Oh my. I wasn't expecting this to go around to other sites, but you're all welcome and encouraged to participate and I'll do my best to answer any questions you have!

The maps made and submitted are still 100% the work of those who made them, and as such belong to them. The point in making the contest was to help encourage custom strategy maps being put out there, and while it takes more than a month and a half to make a complete and polished strategy map, the hope is that mappers will continue to work on these maps afterwards and enjoy their own projects. The $50 (and $25/$10 second/third prizes) is just a nice bonus.

Sniper explained it pretty well, and if you're interested in making a LoC map I recommend you contact myself ([email protected]) or Baledwyr on MSN and we can give you specific map ideas and help you with lore.
to bad i can't do much yet and in a month i still will not hav the skills to make a goody map xD for this, =P
good luck who ever enters xD
Hey, the best way to learn is by doing :)
Take it as an opportunity to experiment and see what you discover. Even if you're not the overall winner you may end up creating a map idea you fall in love with!
It's a loose term. Basically any kind of spawn based or diplomacy map fits the bill. Essentially if it isn't dota/TDs/tag/tug of war..
Did you play wc3 custom maps at all? Some good examples from there would be maps like Battle for Middle Earth, Azeroth Wars, Europa, American Colonization, The Alternate Future, Greece, etc.
EDIT: Also, if you would like to participate in the contest, please either post here saying such or shoot me a PM. This is just so I can see how many people plan to be participating so we can determine if there is enough interest to warrant a second and third place prize.
Neat concept, but the reality is a unique new map can take dozens if not hundreds of hours of planning and development. The conversion to hourly pay out is pretty abysmal for 50$.
I don't think that most people mod games because they think they can earn a profit off of it. If you don't enjoy modding, why would you even enter a modding contest in the first place?
With a "grand prize" of $50, you might as well not have a prize at all besides a pat on the back. This pales in comparison to the Blizzard contest which only recently ended, which will have three winners who get $5000.
In short, this is bad timing to make a contest, and not nearly enough of an incentive. I know that personally I'd much rather just make my own map without any limits on category, creativity, or time. A truly good map takes upwards of 100 hours to create, so it simply isn't worth it.
Thats fair enough. But 50$, is better then 0$. If you are making a strategy map, and think you could be done by the due date, I think it would be in your best interest to send it. Were not Blizzard, were a tiny forum encouraging a specific type of map. As such, our funding is limited to say the least.
The timing isn't bad, its right after Blizzard finished their contests, this gives people that maybe didn't finish on time (Or didn't get a chance to start) a chance at a smaller prize.
Thats my take on it anyways, just wanted to put a spin on your overly negative post. <3
Oh no believe me I've sunk hundreds of hours into the editor without any incentive of profit, but at that point I had no idea what the contest holder really wanted to do with those maps and well the thought of making a new project just to win 50$ just doesn't work in the time/payout sense. Now that its been clarified that the maps are just judged and nothing more and there isn't really any sort of 'needed' theme so you can just use any strat map it makes it more appealing to those that have such projects going on.
Yo momma' :P Sorry man if I was making a strat map I'd be into it more but already got enough on me plate. The contest also still seems a little loose still, no real criteria in play other then 'please the judge'. One question that might generate more interest though: Can a contestant submit something they've already released and just post the link to its location here on mapster? If you allow prior work...that would probably be far more appealing to those who generate these sorts of maps. If you don't though, yah that whole 'hundreds of hours of work to maybe earn 50$' thing just doesn't work out for most of us.
(btw I thought your pic was the lovely christina hendrix, not whoever it was you linked to :P)
But, sadly, points are given for originality, pre-released insn't exactly an original concept. =)
Although, don't quote me on it, wait till Grunty gets here.
Also, everything submitted must be submitted through diplomunion.com, to prevent confusion. Alternately, you can send it to Grunty1's or Baledwyr's E-Mails.
And, it is the lovely Christina. If you've ever watched the TV series, Firefly, she was excellent in it. If you havn't, then I recommend watching!

I would say that its better then the 0$ many talented map makers typically get by creating a fun map. :)
