Hi all ! im a little new in this forum, but anyway i post here becose i thing thats the best place to find peapole that are really good in the editor, anyway my title isn't the best for what im trying to tell, but thats not important. What i search to do is a map like "Starcraft Universe" .
Of course even for a pro doing it alone is, i think, really hard. So i want to recruit people to to make the mod with me, and of course teach me some trick to be better, becose compared to the pro, im lame :s, but im good enough to make nice little mod :D but thats not a little mod, thats a really big mod.
Anyway come post here to "sing up" for the mod, and if i have to put more details to made you interest, tell me here :) To the pleasure of work with you
First, welcome to mapster :) (no actually that's not the first reply syndrome)
Second, I'm expecting a lot of comment in this same thread will be along the line of "OMG nubs do you know how much work it take to make those" or "not another DOTA/MMO clone that will only exists in memory", or just "think ppl will be interested in working with you with just that info ??". Then 1 page after it become degraded to flaming, troll and insulting all around. (which might or might not happen due to hindsight bias since I was predicting those).
I would really hate these kind of things happen, as it throw off newcomer to this site, who are genuinely interested in making maps (which frankly, happens a lot around here, and I'm also very sad to have to tell you so in the very first welcome post). But truth be told, these things are kind of true as I would probably say the same, just not in a GTFO manner. Mapping is a serious dedication, especially when you come to later stages with ambitious project like yours.
My only advice would be trying to start small, depends on the level of expertise you currently are on, do a scenario, a campaign, or even a good ol' TD. Open other's map, learn from it, making stuff similar to it, talking to its author about it, making friend, gather a team, work on an ambitious project... etc.. Anything should start small :)
First, you spelled sign up wrong. Second, There is a team recruitment forum which is what it sounds like you want. General rule, not posted here but recognized by most, is to show some content of what you want. Most people will not help a project if there is no proof of a project existing or there has been no time put in. Also a lot of good info about the mod will be helpful. People always think that others will steal their idea when we're busy working on our own ideas and too busy to think of some newcomers mod who's too protective of an idea that is probably as generic as it comes. I'm not saying your idea is generic but after a while all these people who think their idea is the next big hit it gets kind of old.
Also don't be afraid to try everything first. Once you get as far as you can you should ask for help on the forums and if you don't understand you could try recruiting people to help make the mod.
First, thank you all for answering my post, tho i realize im not at the exact place to open it ' but what is done is done. So i thing i wasn't clear enough in my first post, i actually don't want to make a moba ( what is that ? ) or a dota, its a third person shooter, but in a wow like, exept that there will be no class becose of the model, and also, the 2 species that you will be able to choose a caracter from, will not start a fight if they see one soldier of the another species.
You will have to fight other change your state ( like pass from psyonic to heroic or something like that ) so the weapon of the other will be able to kill you, and you to kill them. But i don't have the time to really explore the editor becose i have to make my homework, study for my exam, make some ladder in 1v1, and all these things.
Thats why i request help from the mapster becose i know you guys are a hundred million time better than me, and do this mod with you will teach me more with the editor, and of course i will ask for some trick :) so is that ok now or i have to tell more to make some pro come here and help me ?
MOBA = Multiplayer Online Battle Arena is a term often used for AoS / Dota - Style Maps.
Well, as progammer said, "something like Starcraft Universe" definitely is a huge undertaking. SCU is in the works for quite some time now, with a supreme team working on it and still not released. I don't exactly want to talk you out of it, but you will have a lot to learn.
As you realized yourself, there is probably no way you can do such a project on your own, so at some point, you will need a team to work with. However, right now you don't even know, what kind of a team you would need and what you actually can do yourself. I would recommend first getting to know the editor a little better, learning, what it is capable of. Then try to create some stuff yourself, to find out, which aspect of the editor you like to do and where you can produce good results.
After that, you probably have a better understanding, what people you actually need for your team, also you might already have some stuff you can show off for your project, which probably motivates other people to work with you.
How you familiarize with the editor is essentially up to you: Everyone learns differently. You can try to set up small test maps and experiment with stuff you will need later on (try some terrain, try to create heroes and abilities, try to modify a UI etc..). You can also try to just start the project and learn on-the-fly.
You can read/watch tutorials, there are quite a few available on this site, also Blizzard has some nice tutorials covering the basics. If you like video tutorials, check out OneTwo
You can try to open the Blizzard maps (or other open source maps) to look, how they realize stuff.
Like stated, everyone learns differently. For me, the best way of learning was experimenting the crap out of the editor and searching for tutorials, if I could not realize a specific feature I needed.
Also, for most mappers, there is one area, they specialize in:
Are you more of an artist and have an eye for realistic landscapes and areas? You probably want to do terrain.
Do you have experience with 2d graphics or even model editing? UI artist or model creator is the way to go.
Do you have experience in programming/scripting or an inherent sense of logic? You probably want to do triggers or galaxy script.
Are you a full-out masochist with way too much free time? Then data editor it is.
For any of those, expect some major frustration if you never did something similar before. Hell, expect frustration if you were a master of the WC3 editor ;)
For leading a huge project like SCU, you need at least a brief understanding of most of the areas, so you are aware of the possibilities and limitations for each area, can coordinate your team efficiently and assign tasks to the right people.
First of all, a bug erase everything i just write, and i bet there was more that 200 word :( so i will not tell a lot, i make already some maps, and im working on one that is not the mod im trying to make with the mapster, but anyway i just can't follow a tutorial if he is not in a video, becose in video i see the exact thing to do, and just write like this, no. we can say that video tutorial type is my way to learn ;) but my only weakness is the trigger, the trigger and of course one or two other things. But we should talk about all that ingame, don't we ? im european server, name Matzerg code 218 . And i did not play warcraft 3.
My advice would be find a person familiar with the editor who speaks your language as I think it may be hard learning from an English site. If that is impossible, try
Has a big list of tutorials and specifically says whether they include a video or not. My only other advice is
1. Lurk on the forums
2. Read tutorials
3. Ask questions in the proper forum
2. Create something on your own. No one will help you unless you can show some skill.
After you are comfortable with the editor, start with a small project. The creator of Starcraft Universe spends *thousands* of hours making a map like that and knows very well that he may not have a playable game for thousands more. It can be hard to have the discipline to follow through with a project like that if it's your first. Like Programmer said. Make a tower defense or something simple first. :)
I once wanted to make a good map too. I put it on hiatus because I realized how little I actually knew about the editor. In short learn to walk before you run. The tutorials and wiki are good reference bases. Also never be afraid to have side projects, small maps where you test systems out.

Hi! I'm sort of a noob too, although I've been learning alot lately! I'm still in this process, but you could try this to help you as well. I started off by following a tutorial. (simple & advanced tower defense from OneTwoSC on youtube) I then tried to extend my knowledge by doing simple copy, paste type thing. Then I start to expand a little further. This is where you can do whatever you want. For example, I wanted to learn how to make upgrades into whatever I wanted it to be. I searched up a few maps, asked a few questions in the data (or general) forums, and learned how it all works. Then, you incorporate it into your map. You can do pretty much anything once you get to this stage. I have my first map going called Speed D, and it's based off of my noobie map. (It's still is kinda noobie, but I'm still learning. Anyways, if you want to learn about, say requirements, you can search it up, maybe follow a tutorial, then include it in your map. If you some how found your map looking pretty cool, you can remake a new map and test out your memory, and use your other map as an example. You just organize it better, maybe add some more things, and bam! You have a nice map. This really worked for me because you just add whatever you want to know. Other than that, I'm still a noobie, so I don't have much other advice. With the best of luck, Littlefury916
damn i absolutely forget this post T.T shame on me, but anyway, i was working on the mod, and i just need help to continue. So plz if you are a lot of "pro editor man" that have time to loose, then loose it in my mod, with me. I know i don't know everything, but i belive i know enough to build the map, with some help, and also its working faster when you are 100 at the place of 1...
The first thing you should do before this big project is create a melee unit completely from scratch, then go on to the next level and make a ranged unit.
You'd be surprised how much you'll learn from this.
i already make completely new, i think i forget to tell, but i didn't just discover the editor exist, i have make already 4-5 map ( unpopular because i did no advertisement of them XD ). The only thing i don't really know how to make is the trigger, the terrain desing and of course i am not able to create new spell ( well i can, if there is already one that exist, well i mean i can create a new spell if there is an example, but if there is no example it is not certain i will be able to do it )
It sounds like you are pretty new with the editor. I'd suggest to not start on such a project, but instead do something easier. A simple tower defence would make you more familar with both triggers and data. I've been using the editor for about 5 years now (been using wc3 editor too), and i am still not one of those 'pros' you're refering to. I am capable of doing some nice stuff in the editor (such as the map below), but theres still plenty of things i am not capable of. All in all, i think you should admit that you are inexperienced and unable to do what you wanted to, but instead try put some time into learning the editor. I did not learn through tutorials, I just messed around with the editor for days while trying out different stuff and making it function like i wanted it to. If you really want to do something cool with the editor, you should start with the very basics first.
ok, first of all : Happy new year ! i hope you all have a nice crismas
second : im not new with the editor ( well, if we compare with you guys yes im new ) but still i didn't create any "serious" map. So i will create a tower defence. and ps : i already admit i cant do my "big mod". so when my tower defence will be finish i will tell you guys the name and tell me if he is good or not :) but before, tell me, the mapster are US server, or EU server ? or both of them ? because i am EU server.

the editor is real nice but without patience it will wear you out :^(
