I looked around for a while, but couldn't find a discussion on this. Warcraft 3 custom games were and still are known for some amazingly popular games like Dota, Footies, Wintermaul Wars, and Tower Defenses.
However, there is another class of custom games out there with an avid following: Role Playing Games.
WC3 had a lot of seriously epic RPGs (some are still played today). Final Fantasy Forever (ORPG), FF Epic RPG, This Wreckage, Julien's RPG, Ultimate DBZ RPG, The Imagica RPG, World of Warcraft ORPG, Defi4nc3's ORPG, and (#1 on my list) The Black Road.
Me and my friends have been looking around, playing some of the RPGs we find on bnet, however we have yet to find anything approaching any of the maps mentioned above on Starcraft 2.
So my question to you guys is, are there any good RPGs out yet for Starcraft 2 (at this point I would just be expecting a clone of an existing RPG from Warcraft 3 or something)? Failing that, what are the promising RPGs still in development? Anyone working on ports for some of the great WC3 RPGs? Anything close to release?
I know its a big bump, but the question is exactly relevant to mine. I am finding it difficult to find the really good RPG maps. Can anyone link to any of the major RPG maps that are perhaps still in developement, as I would be keen to help beta test stuff, or any quality RPG maps that are out and still in development?
And there was one really amazing RPG that I remember...It was before all those other rpgs and it was sooooo great!!! I think it was Serpent island rpg or something...meh.
I wish someone made a good RPG and released it without losing months on a fancy UI. Game first, UIs later. None of the decent RPG mapmakers/mappers I know of aren't making a custom UI when the games don't really need it :(.
im interested if any map makers are making a map on the same scale of The Black Road. That map was and still is epic on war3. I feel alot of the maps being churned out at the moment are doing one of 2 things;
1) Spending loads of time on flashy animations and not actual game content
2) Spending way too much time time making "teaser" videos for youtube, and not acutally delivering anythign half decent if anything at all. Except some "epic" teaser, with the same re used orchestrated hype music and same, "omg this is gonna be amazing, look at this spell".
They need functional UI, if it's awesome just for sake of being awesome it's worthless. Good rpg map is about so much more than a different-from-standart UI.
If you got extra manpower for just UI, then it's fine, but if you're making everything alone.. just drop flashy stuff and finish the map. I want some goddamn rpgs already >.<

All the mind blowing rpgs are still being worked on as we speak.

Xenx1 that RPG you're thinking of was called "Legacies Tides of the Serpent"

yes! I believe this was it. It was made before all the popular maps and I think it had really great style that sadly I havent seen anymore....

Believe me, RPGs do need an awesome UI. The default UI just doesn't work for RPGs.
It did for W3, don't see why it wouldn't here.
Old RPG games worked fine with limited UIs and they were awesome, too.
