Damn I bet it would fail at 25-30k, 30-40 was my initial :( it never had a chance it was way too greedy, they were asking for more money then indie developers(developing on blizzard RTS makes you a modder not indie developer).
Several reasons why it might not be funded...limitation of sc2, not enough marketing, too much competition in kickstarter and on MMO front (even F2P MMO's exist).
To me scu doesnt even look lke the best map on sc2 (just my preference thou).
And considering its gona be f2p, perhaps people dont feel like they are getting anything from donating? dunno...
1. They have had so much exclusive help at the expense of nearly everyone in the entire community (not SCU's fault, that's Blizzard's) that they should have had it done well before now.
2. I have been asked to test maps that do what they did and even more that were made for free. And all failed.
3. If Subsistence (I am going to keep using these guys because it is the very top project ever started by the community) didn't get official support (after asking 2 separate Blizzard developers on the IRC I have confirmed that the project did not receive any support to take note of) from Blizzard I see no legitimate reason why SCU should get the lion's share (once again, Blizzard's fault, not SCU's).

I agree that $80k seems very ambitious. It's only halfway over though so I don't really see the point in already saying it won't reach the goal. It still has a lot of time left.

Such as new gaming sites at blizzards urging. in game rewards(I was specifically told that we cant do this), Claiming its an MMO :/ when its 1 player currently and max of 12 later...
Being Featured on blizzard multiple times, ingame featured channel, private support, etc. I mean they have had every possible advantage.... so I am biased

They reuse a ton of pregiven assets, indie devs have to create all the assets (or most) from scratch which is a TON of work.

Well, the idea of kickstarter is that you show off your plan and think hard about how much money is needed to realize it - this way the project actually has a good chance of getting finished if it raises the funding set for it. As the site's FAQ puts it:
"On Kickstarter, a project must reach its funding goal before time runs out or no money changes hands. Why? It protects everyone involved. This way, no one is expected to develop a project with an insufficient budget, which sucks. Remember you set your own funding goal, so aim to raise the minimum amount you'll need to create your vision. Projects can always raise more than their goal, and often do."

Yes they made a mistake with the whole name thing but they made it right by bringing him to Blizzard HQ. We really aren't any different than other projects except we decided to ask them for permission when dealing with their intellectual property.
As far as in game rewards you should read the agreement you checked as it has all of their rules and regulations for map editor content and such.
We have not been calling it an MMO. It says on our kickstarter that it's not we cannot control the gaming websites that keep reporting incorrect info so people will click on it. We have been actively going on sites and correcting comments and if you look at the updates/comments/podcasts you'll see we acknowledge that people have been reporting that incorrectly and it is indeed NOT an MMO but an MORPG.

Trust me if you saw all the coding and craziness Ryan and Phillip do you would change your mind. This is just as much work as an indie game.
Yes we use a lot of assets in SC2 and I've also made 60+ 3d models for it. We are bringing tons of custom content to this project and hope to keep bringing more. Unfortunately we have all given up quite a bit and we don't want to quit at the prologue but it really is out of our hands at this point. Many projects never reached out to the community or did it in a non-Blizz-approved way and failed and we don't want to do that.
That's what kickstarter is for. When you can no longer follow your dream and you need help and others want to see that dream realized too then that's why it exists. I hope this clears some stuff up for everyone.

How does it work, if it doesn't reach the goal do they still get the money?
Once people donate, is the money basically transferred into the project leaders pocket?

The people that pledge money are allowed to cancel their pledge before the end date. So I'd imagine that's not likely.
