We need an "Active topics" or "Today's topics" option.
Without it, people use general for all. I won't lie, I don't read most of the other subforums, mostly because no one replies there. All the good answers I got where here. I didn't get any answer at all (except exceptions) in the other subforums.
It's simple as that, as long as we can't see all active topics, people will stick to a subforum. Happens everywhere where the admin doesn't put that option.
And yeah, I know we can't do a thing with Curse bla bla bla.
Currently the data forum has more viewers than the General Chat forum. Also, quantity =/ quality. People who are good at triggers but not data will hang in the trigger forum. If you have all around knowledge, you will stick around everywhere.
That is what sub-forums are for. General Chat is for when you need to be heard by a lot of people, regardless who they are.
There is also another reason to post in a specific sub forum. Like you said, the sub forums get less viewers. This is because typically, unless you are there to ask a question, you are there to answer a question. How many people know or actively want to provide help on UI? Not many. How many people NEED help with UI? Not many. If you post a question in the UI sub forum, it may stay there for a couple days, but will remain on top, or at least close to the top of the list. When someone who does know a lot about UI comes along, he will see the question and answer.
Posting questions like that in the General Forum is a great way to get your thread derailed. Besides, if everything was sent to the General Chat, posts would be drowned almost immediately.
All in all, no matter how useless some forum sections may seem, they are all there for a reason. As for the current topics forum, well, that is on the front page with the most recent posts.
And most of the time we just move the topics... at least I do.. but im currently ..."away". when im in hardmode sc2mapster mode, you wont see question topics in the general section, simple as that.
and remember, just because you dont read the other forums, dosnt mean others done.. questions will get answered 10 fold faster in the correct section. Most of the people that post in those sections, dont read the general section.

I get answers faster at general. Most of my threads out of it are dead, even after I bumped them every week. Maybe they're better for bigger problems, but minor questions get never answered.

I don't think that's enough, we need a page with the last 50 active, or with all the threads sorted by date no matter the subforum.

Sadly, thats not something thats going to happen any time soon. Though something like that would take maybe 40 seconds to make, we have no php control over the site, else id agree a way to view a large list of new posts would be great.

Curse....Where's the code monkey when we need him! *sighs*
Yeah, like he said, we have no access to the site's code. Believe us, there are a lot of improvements we would make if we did. But for now, we just get updates from curse. Eventually we should get some better forum software, but...Yeah. For now, we have to wait it out.

Feel free to Send me a PM if you have any questions/concerns!
It's a real shame the way alot of the mods feel about it. They actually like it like this :/
I can only see the site getting less and less active and people moving to others to advertise their projects. Team Liquid atleast you have 1 section for maps, where everyone interested in customs will be looking.
Lets face it the only real way to get attention on your project here is to have it on the main page and news'd sadly..

If a melee section was added, I'm sure some brief re-organization is possible.
Yes, forum re-organization is something we can control. Are you suggesting we just dump everything into one forum? That's just going to make it harder to find an answer, no? Keep in mind that rearranging forums breaks every link, so it's not something we want to take lightly. Out of curiosity, what would you propose for a new forum structure?
And as for the mod's "attitude". I'm willing to do whatever is best to help the site, so if restructuring forums would do that, then I'm in. I'm sure the other mods have a similar mindset. The question is whether or not changing the forum structure will help. In fact, we have been discussing this very issue in the staff forum.
Based on the number of mods commenting in this thread, I wouldn't be surprised if at least some serious though went into it. But realize that it will take time, if it does happen at all. Adding a forum is far different than combining 4 together. Like zelda said, it breaks every link.
What I dont think people get... is they were one forum at the start.. in fact we SPLIT them from being one, because it was needed, maken them one, is by no means the solution, at all.

You want to encourage as many views as possible in the maps section, the more people check out a thread the more chance of replies.
Data, Triggers, Arts section I understand there quite specific and only a few people can correctly give answers.
Team Recruitment - This seems fine, it's quite active and very specific to building teams. Don't want this clustered or filtered down.
Map Review / Map Feedback - Please merge. - Change to Bnet Maps & Projects - Discuss existing projects you've created or played on the battle net, gather feedback and arrange games together!
Map Suggestions/Requests / Project Workplace - Please Merge - Change to WIP Maps & Projects - Shows off screenshots, videos and previews of your upcoming projects. Let everyone see what you've been working on!
Move all 3 into the Player Zone forum, now it's all at the top. It still has the diversity, but has everything at the top and better organized.
People could contact mods if they feel a project is ready to be moved up from WIP to full blown release.
The only reason map review and map feedback arnt one, is the mod who use to (or still does.. I never see him post) didnt want them to be one section... I kinda agree those should have always been one. Map suggestions and project workplace should by no means be the same. They are not the same at all, in fact that section was made to keep all the "Hey guiz I haz an idea for some1 to make" threads out of the main section", and its done its job very well. We want project workplace for people to show off their projects or ideas, and not be cluttered with randoms peoples map ideas they want others to make.
edit: Moveing project workplace to a higher up section (so you see it right away) is a grand idea.. but you run into the big problem of massive broken links.
You should only split when there's a clear over flux of threads, as in when relatively new ones get quickly knocked down the page too fast.
and thats why some of them were...
re-edit: trust me... we are thinking hard on ways to get more people here, and to help people show off their maps.... it is the point of the site after all. as zelda said... we talk about this all the time between mods thinking of things to do.

Wtf is that bullshit? normal forums have a code for the thread, shown at the url, and then an assigend subforum. No matter hoe you move it, the thread is there, always. Like a pointer.
In this case, they shouldn't break anyway, you only need to replace the forum section at the url, nope?
This forums lacks stuff, and now I discover the stuff we have sucks. Damn Curse :(.

I do agree with combining Map Feedback and Map Review. In fact, I just suggested it in the staff forum.
I would agree with what molsterr said though. People who say "GUYS! I have an idea!" are very different from people saying "Guys! I am currently working on a cool map, what do you think so far?
Last time we restructured everything (was long time ago) every link was broken. We are making progress, however slow it may be. You can see recetn changes here (mostly bug fixes, but hey, t's something). Again, we don't have access to the code. But things should improve in the future.
As mol said, if we had acess to the code... *laughs maniacally*
You should see the stuff we make work by doing all this workaround funny crap... the main boxes you see on the news page... yeah those arnt really there.. thats a news post that hidden, and then a javascript inserts them before the first news div... . I even worked on a way to make fake news posts (that fully works) because we dont have a way to give ranks the way we want... but we make it work with crazy ideas like that.... so trust me, your mods are trying.
I would agree with you if the project workplace was full of junk and crap, but most of it is actually pretty decent content.
At the end of day if one of two threads get made a week, with just 'hey look at this', I don't see it as a big deal at all and certainly not justifying a whole forum split.
Remember threads get updated overtime with more content, so you may get the odd random thread now and then, but more previews and information will come overtime with enough interest.
Right now thou as stupid as it will sound, it almost feels as thou someone has deliberately tried to make it as hard and complicated as possible for people simply wanting feedback on their map. So say you have a project you've just off the ground and you're advised to post it right at the bottom of the forums, where a few will look.
I often see a thread on the main page, I click on it and reply, then can never find it again, without actively searching threw every section. Often I can't be bothered in the end to keep doing this.
Lastly I can't see their being many links broken, only in peoples signatures to their projects which is no problem what so ever? Where else would you need to link?
This is only the 1st page and half of 2nd page.
The problem is the forum.
We need an "Active topics" or "Today's topics" option.
Without it, people use general for all. I won't lie, I don't read most of the other subforums, mostly because no one replies there. All the good answers I got where here. I didn't get any answer at all (except exceptions) in the other subforums.

It's been suggested, just merge some of them together.
4 separate maps forums is way too much.
