Agreed!!!! This must change!! Please go post on the Blizzard forums. I have not heard a word on this subject at all from Blizzard.
The primary sort should be by change in popularity averaged over the last 7 days or so. A map that's trending upward rapidly should place above a map that's played more but is stagnating. Leave raw popularity in as a secondary sorting measure.
yea honestly i dont know how the fucked that up.. its such an obvious mistake, like wtf were they thinking. a simple fix would just to be like every other game where the front page only shows the games with active lobbies. on the list page, you'd be able to see things like how many players are currently in the lobby / max players, map popularity, possibly latency, screenshot, name, description, etc. the fact that you have to actually select a map and enter a lobby to see any info on the map is also bullshit..
also obviously you'd be able to sort the map list by map type, popularity, lobbies with players, etc.
and btw the popularity system is flawed.. heres a tip for map makers while the system is still abusable: -the popularity is determined by how many time the game is played -if you make map that lasts for a short time, but gets played more than once in a session, it gets popular -if you make a map that lasts for a longer time, it will get played less, so it wont be as popular
they should determine map popularity by the total amount of time spent on a map over a certain period, not how many times players have made a game with it
They need to change it so that you can actually sort by genre and such. "Custom" isn't very useful when every single map is that type.
Also, a like/dislike system would be real nice. If you like a map, it would be put in a separate tab of some sort, allowing you to easily find it. Disliking maps would cause them to vanish from your list of created games. Could potentially be used in tandem with a rating system; also possible that you would be able to see how many of your friends like/dislike certain maps or something.
I did see a Blizz post recently saying that they intend to change it. Not certain as to precisely what they are going to do with it however.
Here is an even better one: You make a map, its popular for a day, due to an abused bug it isn't played for a month, now nobody can host it. Why? The only way to host maps is:
Just a way to sort for active maps, i.e., maps that are currently hosted. That way mappers can just host their own map, and people will still join and if it's any good it will gain popularity from there.
I heard that the system is actually per player per hour. This means that short and long maps are the same, but maps with more player slots are automatically more popular.
Please provide the source to what you "heard".
That's just wrong.
It's games/day, with an internal cooldown preventing the same player from spamming create over and over.
Quit whining OMFG
Found it, and I think it comes from a very reputable voice...

Dunno why he hasn't put it here yet, unless I'm understanding it wrong.
It is true that popularity system really is bad. Hopefully it is improved in Europe too as some of my maps are not really played because of it.
It doesn't work like that, you can easily check it yourself :)
Try starting a game every 10 minutes.
as long as there are maps like zerg swarm beta on rank #2 its not the system that is fucked up.. it is the users.
@vjeux: Go hrm. lol ok, Get on the old B.net, LOOK. take notes.
So true! :D
But the system still is super bad. Its amazing how blizzard was even make the system more horrible :DDDD....They should hire some monkeys to do design bnet 3.0, Im sure it would turn out better than bnet 2.0
So the question is, with this popularity system, and none of my friends are online (AKA don't exist,) who do I play my map with? I'm tired of testing it alone vs. random guys I put on it.
look for some people to play with in the chatrooms... oh wait a minute. i think blizzard will do nothing about the system until heart of swarm and i could even think of a business strategy that goes like: "hey if you want to get this new improved populary system 2.0 then upgrade to heart of swarm or you need to stick to the old system".
Where is this fabled recently played list I keep hearing about? I can't find it... -Feels mildly stupid about not being able to find it.-
