Well, like I said, how about a good ol' town centre? It doesn't have to be too fancy, just a 'gathering point'. You can fill that up with a bunch of colonists, and it'll look lively yet still not crowded because it makes sense for them all to be there and gather up. I saw the building inside the cave; security isn't a bad idea. A marauder or two standing guard could be interesting, and if you really want to get into it, you can do amazing stuff with the tunnel (custom torches, stuff hanging from the ceiling, mechanical platforms, go wild).
I'm actually liking it more and more every edit. It still feels a bit... 'chaotic', but because your latest edits with the fog and lightning are making it look more like a 'high-rez painting', some stress is taken off the eyes. It's hard to say what could be improved, but you could probably still do something to 'take the edge off' a bit. Perhaps add a bit of lava if there's room for it.
Okay i have took your idea,
but i have only shown one point of the map with the lava risen :)
Cause need to get a good camera view for the other view :)
Custom torches, improvisation, I'd have to work with lighting more. Back on WC3 I'd only terrain in-game with Narks' SotDRP system, I don't really find much things I can pile together to create something else, SC2 doesn't have enough items for it yet. Fixed dependencies update.

Just looked through your map :)
and all i can say is, work on the cave entrace abit.
But if you were to ktae a picture through the trees near jeep with lights on makes it look spooky ;)
[EDIT: The deadline was Tuesday, right? I'm not late or anything? ^_^]
I haven't read this whole thing, so I hope I didn't steal an idea or some such. It's sort of like the "colonists crash land" idea, but instead it's a prison ship - sort of like the origin of Starcraft.
I tried to highlight some of the hills in the jungle with lighter terrain, but my foliage just covered it all. Rarg. I also don't like the lighting in it AT ALL. I tried ti fix that (and give the whole "hopeful new beginning" thing a physical representation) by dropping some rays of sunlight into the map. Whether it sucks or not, I'm still proud of it, seeing as it's my second full map with the editor.
I won't post pics, but I WILL post the map. I'm mad at the triggers, currently, but I did manage to utilize them to throw together a rough story that follows Arlan, a prisoner who was knocked unconscious for a long time from the crash and presumed dead, as he wakes up and makes his way to the WIP settlement ahead as the prisoners try to start a new life.
Apparently, the only ones that lived we're the repentant ones. Meh. It's a ridiculously small map with a few interesting points, some trigger work, a single cheat (used to skip the only "cutscene" for debugging), and a little easter-egg type thing relating to the port-a-potty. Just look in my triggers if you want to see it.
Yup, deadline is tuesday, that's when the new WTE goes up. And you're not late, I'm still going to make and upload mine tomorrow :P
What you've done is... fairly interesting. The crash site works really well, though you should smooth some edges in the terrain. Additionally, you're right, the lightning seems rather odd. Also, your colonist camp is interesting. It looks different from all the other colonist camps I've seen, though still realistic. It reminds me vaguely of District 9.
I like the end result most of what I've seen, Crizpy. The lightning is just right there and even though it's a tad chaotic, it works.
Anyway, I finished my terrain, finally. Took me quite some work, but I'm not too happy with it, it's a bit bland and I could've improved a lot of things if I could've been arsed with taking more time.
I found it rather hard to get good camera angles, so I uploaded the map as well, for those who want to take a closer look. Here it goes...
Edit: I should probably mention; thanks to Corbo and Slightlyrandom for helping me along with my questions. Also, pic 1 and 2 were WIPs, the rest is the result in-game.
Edit 2: I forgot to mention. I ended up with a grand total of 6544 doodads. 967 of those are in the ravine. For comparison, an average 1v1 melee map will have 800 to 1700 doodads.

Looks very nice :)
i didnt get chance to finish all of my map :) going to get ready to finish it all off :) making it into a 2v2 Chaotic Volcanic Terrain :)
Oh man, I never got around to finishing, it was going to be a night-time thing too, I couldn't work around his night settings though, got too busy with melee and friends. Sorry for no pics.

Tree-doodad spam is pretty bad, could probably lower that by a whole lot if you increased the size of trees to realistic proportions. Cool arch-bridge bro.
Heres my entry, Its the beginning of the Hybrid onslaught on Korhal.
Man, my poor computer just cannot handle that many building doodads. It was running at 5 seconds per frame when i was rendering this and it dosn't support realistic shadows or lighting, still looks decent tho.
I have a feeling that it would look alot better if rendered on a high end machine.
wtb new one! Im sad I didnt see this till last night, im bad at terraining for now but practice makes perfect and I see so much in my head I want to do lol

Holy shit, I like that a lot now. You really filled it up. It seems more like a random military compound rather than keeping with the theme now, but I'll excuse you as it is a piece of awesome work. If I can ask, how did you get your textures to look that awesome? The bits in front of the cave and near the spaceship work perfectly.

Yes, you're very much right. It's just that I couldn't be arsed anymore since it was going to be a showcase anyway. Made the whole thing in a sweep of about 4 hours and I got tired in the end.

I don't like the gazillion streetlights all over the place, you could've cut down on those. Aside from that... it's pretty cool. The military bases work quite well.

I'd love to be a part of this. Please bestow upon us a new challenge since it's Tuesday now.
Yes, yes, I'll admit, I'm late - I got caught up in a few games of HotAT yesterday and forgot to upload a new one. To be fair though, uploading a WTE every tuesday morning at 4 AM would make for a pretty horrible schedule. I'm going to post up WTE #2 now, bare with me.
I really wanted it to be a mining colony that has found a mysterious Xel'naga ruin housing more/new hybrids, or something off of the book series on how the Dark Voice was released. What do you mean about the textures, the terrain? I really have no idea what you mean by that .Oh yeah, sorry for the missing context in the first post, I was getting instructions on how to make a night from Dark.Revenant back from WC3.

Here is my final production of my terrain, Note large map, not all of map is used, only top left :) Hope you enjoy.
