Welcome everyone, to the Weekly Terraining Exercise, blatently stolen from the old Warcraft 3 Campaigns forums.
What is this I don't even
The Weekly Terraining Exercise (WTE from henceforth) is a weekly thread, in which we can... exercise our terraining! I noticed there was still fairly little interest in terraining on the site, and figured I could get something interesting going for the community. The basic idea is that every week on... *looks at the calender* ... tuesdays, I will post up a new exercise, granted that there's actually interest in it and the mods will allow it. The thread will have a single 'theme', and it's up to you to make a terrain around that theme and submit your result within a week, when the next exercise goes up. You should post screenshots rather than your entire map. We then comment on eachothers creations. Whether you're a complete newbie or a Bob Rossian veteran, you can participate. We can all learn from eachother, show off our work and live happily ever after.
Since I can barely do this alone, I'll take submissions and suggestions for WTE's. If you have an idea for a theme you'd like to see, you can PM it to me. The only real rule is that you leave it as 'wide open' as possible. "A Terran outpost surrounded by Zerg on Char" is a fairly limited theme. "An assaulted outpost" is a lot better.
So what about this week?
Well, since this is the start of the WTE, I figured the theme could be "Dawn of a new era". Basically, this means that any terrain that signals the 'start' of something is what you should be aiming for. As a couple of examples; the birth of the first Hatchery on a planet that is about to come under assault by the Zerg and a Terran command centre landing on an unexplored planet would both qualify.
That said, put that imagination to work folks! Lets see what you do with this. I'll probably be joining the Exercise myself as well. Good luck, and most of all - have fun :)
NOTE THAT WTE #1 IS NOW CLOSED. YOU'RE FREE TO DISCUSS EVERYTHING THAT HAS BEEN SUBMITTED, BUT PLEASE, NO MORE NEW SUBMISSIONS.
I had to register up for this! So, I've been mapping and doing silly things in WC3 editor, and SC2 editor is something I don't quite yet understand, so these terraining exercises will help me develop my skills. Gonna put some pictures later, when I'm done with it!
made this is like 5 min, its not awesome but its a cool idea if someone wants to make a better version.
edit: added the map. didn't know i could just attach files right here, that's neat. Also, i didn't do anything with the terrain other than the cliff, i just thought it was a cool scene.
You can attach images with your post so a thumbnail is automatically created :) Also, it would be nice to add the map too, this way people can check out how you did it.
My first post here, I only just got the game a couple days ago and haven't looked into the editor yet. About to follow a few tutorials now to get me started. This sounds like exactly the kind of thing I enjoy Mozared, really sweet idea. Maybe I will participate next week, when I've at least learnt how to open the editor :-p
That looks awesome, Roy! The only thing I don't really like is the type of tree on that type of terrain. There's this whole 'concrete' feeling and the tree seems a bit out of place. It could probably do with some grass around it, maybe a small hill - to indicate it's actually a bit of nature there, not just the random tree.

What I like most about this screenshot is the perspective. The terrain itself seems a bit bland though - what I reckon you need is creep encroaching on the fallen battlecruiser. Some rocks and other types of foliage would work well, especially some trees on the hill we're looking down from. More terrain textures, especially on the hill, would help too.
Oh boy, something I can participate in. Colonist get. Are there any size restrictions or something like that?
No, none at all. If you're low on time, then feel free to join in with something simple and small. If you feel like going for it, it's all up to you to spend hours on a huge zone with amazing detail.

Glad to hear, the more here the merrier =). Welcome to the forums and the game, and good luck on that epic campaign ;)
I'm still finishing up a Lost Temple tribute map myself at the moment, but I'll join in sooner or later this week. Thanks for all the positive replies =)

Thanks, I reattached a new picture, hopefully its better.
I like this idea very much , im going to make a map but i would like to ask you guys something. I can't find trees anywhere in the units, can someone tell me how to make those?
I like this idea, so much I signed up for it. I'm not that great at terraining in SC2, though I had tried it out in War3. This is a perfect place to get creative, and improve, so bravo for the thread/idea. Also, wasn't sure if I had to do an introduction post in Off-topic, so sorry if I was suppose to. :<
But anyway, here's something I put up in...maybe 30-50 minutes. It's not that good, and I'd like some criticism on it. It's a scene that shows a colonist ship that had just landed on a newly discovered planet. Not that creative of an idea, but for me, it would do. :D
And just a few questions about the editor. When you take a screen shot with Print Screen, where's the folder that it goes to(I had to cut this out in Paint >:)? Second question, is there any way to remove the blue boxes under trees/doodads? Thanks in advance.
As a long time lurker on this site, I have finally been drawn into making an account by this, so hello everyone! And props to you for getting me to sign up ^^
So here's my contribution, took me an hour or so, maybe two. It's a colony of people that have been forced to flee their planet and have found a new world to land on. (When I started this was an original idea, and now there are two of us :P)
Also BruMars, if you are using XP, screenshots are stored in My Documents\StarCraft II\Screenshots, but I don't know about any other OS. Also I don't know what blue boxes you mean under trees/doodads.
heres my new map. its about a new king who just came. that archon there is the old one. i knkow this sounds lame but to me tis awsome
To be honest, I like that. Terrainwise it's a bit bland, but you did a very good job at showing how simple buildings and units can create a good atmosphere. Creating a good looking base on any map is something rarely anybody ever pays any attention to.

Damn, that is awesome! I really feel like playing that map, simply because of the feeling that one picture gives me. Really, the only remarks I've got is that you need to lower the trees on the hill (use page down) so that they don't float over the ground, and that the area could do with some more grass in the area past the marine.
As for your questions; I'm not sure what blue boxes you're talking about, unless you mean the shadows? Your screenshots should go in the 'screenshot' folder which should be right next to the folder where your maps are saved. By default this is C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents\StarCraft II. Also, welcome to Sc2Mapster =)
Here's what I've been working on, its a Xel'Naga containment unit from a colony ship before the creation of the zerg and the protoss.
I like this one, too. It's a shame there's no Xel'naga models, as yours could probably use one. The areas north and south of the crystal/holding tanks are a bit bland, maybe you could spice those up.

It seems quite similar to BruMars' terrain, and I think I like his better, but yours is pretty awesome as well. What it needs is some trees on the foreground, to make the area where the landed ship is more of a 'clearing' rather than 'a huge bit of open space'. Also, did you fiddle with the water settings to make it more reflective?

Thanks for your comments and compliment, to be fair I also noticed a similarity to BruMars' and I do think his is better, which is why I thought it necessary to point out that I didn't just steal his idea. I'll see what I can do to improve the map! And yes, I turned the graphics up as far as they would go to see what it would do to the water, and I liked it, even if it might have melted my graphics card in the process.
Edit: I didn't actually change any water settings in the editor, which I think is what you were actually asking
Also I think everyone here has done some great terraining, keep up the good work :)

True! I didn't expect this much interest in my little 'project'. Lovely work to everyone! Keep it up! Don't forget to comment on eachothers work though, we probably all have good tips for eachother.
As for the theme - I wouldn't worry about it, something like that is what I had in mind in the first place. Stealing ideas is something that I reckon is barely possible in the WTE.
I've got a good idea of what I'm gonna do, now to make some time to get to it...
