I may be missing something obvious, but I've searched the forum for something about this and haven't found any information.
My question is - how does one go about placing minerals when designing a standard melee map?
Is there any functionality built into the terrain editor that will help me place minerals at the standard distance from the start location?
Is the only solution to import blizzard maps, study the mineral placement using the grid, and then replicate that manually?
Interesting question, I wrestled with this when I made my first melee maps. The simple truth is that there is no 'standard' formation. There's only two rules that you'll want to keep in mind, and the first one isn't even that mandatory;
1. Try and place your minerals and vespene geysers in such a way that you leave a hole for main buildings right in the middle of them. A command centre is 5X5. For a clearer explanation, refer to the attached screenshot.
2. Make sure that all minerals are accessible without the SCVs having to travel more than 1.5 the travel time to the shortest mineral patch. This means you can put a block of minerals behind another one in some situations, but keep it reasonable - don't make one huge block of 8 patches where there's one or two of them completely inaccessible until the other two are mined out.

Thanks for any help you guys can give me!

Thanks! I shall get to work.
