Sorry for the late update, had a birthday to celebrate. Here's our new topic, though: a "Lookout Tower". Tying into the 'outpost' theme from last week, this week I want to see any sort of tower built to keep an eye on the surrounding areas.
So I didnt spend much time on the actual terraining parts of this, so the environment looks pretty bad around the tower. But I spent quite a bit of time on the tower itself, and this is what I came up with!
The shot that is actually in game is the really dark one.... I need to work on the lighting and camera angle and shtuff.
Pretty cool little 'fortress' you have there, Skirampus. Looks like something the Dominion could come up with. Only real gripe is that it looks a bit too 'fortified' - it's more of an over-the-top nuclear bunker than a lookout tower right now. Perhaps you could lower the walls some or make them less thick? Also, that marine standing on the lone balcony without any exit looks really sad :(
It does? Feels more like a human base on Mars to me =P. I like your color theme; it's Mar Sara, but not quite Mar Sara. Haven't seen that shade of brown before.
This is my first entry here, hopefully not the last. I'm not as expert as some people here, but i kinda like my tower. Alien 3 and AVP3 inspired me:)
I didn't care much about the terrain, I focused on the tower.
It would be a BITCH to climb those stairs, but I like your view =P.
Lots of new people lately too btw, welcome everyone! If I can ask, how did you guys decide to join in on the WTE? Did you only just found them, or have you been looking at them but never felt like joining in?
...have you been looking at them but never felt like joining in?
Been stalking this thread the last few months. One night I think it saw me looking in through the window, but I'm not quite sure. Anyhow, even though it might be a rush, and it doesn't know me, I'd like to start a serious relationship with it.
Ok, here's my shot at a slightly different take on this weeks WTE. Decided to go for a Protos jungle observation post. Nice and simple, they get warped in via the pylon for their shift, then can warp out again and get switched with another zealot.
Was going to go hardcore, add several more large trees with interconnecting bridges, steps built into the trees spiralling downwards to the ground as a way up, buildings built into the trees etc. but would take a biblically long time lol.
It's funny. Stretching doodads like that generally completely effs up your texture, but it simply seems to work in your case because the messed up texture is the 'standard'. Kind of hard to explain.
I like the whole idea, reminds me a lot of a very old WTE back from the WarCraft 3 days where a 'treehut city' was the assignment. A guy named 'Beam' made this beautiful Night Elf village with a similar setup. The only thing I dislike about your terrain is those large trees; where are the large protruding branches? And why are there TWO large trees in the middle of a huge forest and are all other trees the same size? Add some in-betweeners there, and spicy up those huge tree trunks.

Weekly Terraining Exercise #73
Evening folks!
Sorry for the late update, had a birthday to celebrate. Here's our new topic, though: a "Lookout Tower". Tying into the 'outpost' theme from last week, this week I want to see any sort of tower built to keep an eye on the surrounding areas.
Have fun, and good luck!

I threw this one together pretty fast.
Could still use some work, but I can't really bring myself to sit down and polish it at the moment.

I need to start using campaign dependencies. Or Photoshop.
Looks like a shot from a Dracula movie.

@Mozared: Go
You know what I mean, towering spires off in the distance with a low-shot, Dracula! :P

It looks incredible! May I ask, how many doodads did you use for that tower?
@ScorpSCII: Go Around 90.

Impressive stuff. It's a shame the game doesn't default to maximum graphical settings when taking screenshots, it would look even better.

I've always followed the WTEs, but i don't have too much time to spare and make things like this and if i have i rather play:)
Thinking about doing my first entry here :) Terran required?

WTEs are all about expanding your ideas and abilities - requiring a Terran feel would go against the whole principle of the thing.
(Unless it's a specifically stated part of the topic, which is rare.)

I only just got here, and I like terraining, it seemed like an obvious thing to join in on.
Wow, that's very creative. How did you do the walk ways?

Used window boards, changed the dimensions of them :)
