Riley's Micro Olympics
This map consists of several minigames, each designed to train specific Starcraft 2 micro skills. You can earn a gold, silver, or bronze medal in each scenario, and your high score and progress is saved. There are currently four scenarios, with more on the way:
Stalker Skirmish
You're given a force of 8 stalkers with which to defeat 13 roaches. This scenario tests your ability to focus fire, kite, and blink out of harm's way.
Baneling Breakout
Your force of 4 marines must survive against a horde of banelings. They start slowly but the rate at which they spawn speeds up over time. This scenario tests your ability to quickly react to danger from all sides, accurately control the movement of your units, move while shooting, and use stim defensively.
Forcefield Frenzy
You have a lone colossus (with upgraded range) and a small army of sentries to hold off swarms of hydralisks on an island with four bridges. This scenario tests your ability to effectively place forcefields, micro colossi for maximum damage, and manage multiple fronts at the same time.
Sniper School
Your three ghosts are tasked with killing as many protoss units as possible as they run by. This scenario tests your mouse accuracy, ability to pick out important targets in large crowds, ability to aim EMPs, ability to manage multiple casters at the same time, and ability to observe Dark Templars without detection and use EMP to reveal them.
Nice map, these are my thoughts:
Forcefields was pretty boring because they were so slow. Maybe having them come quicker but having two colossi and more sentries would make it more interesting, since you would need to keep two chokes blocked at the same time.
Sniper school has too much payoff on DT and too little on zealots. Two snipes was a dead HT, emp+snipe was dead DT, empempemp+snipe was archon, and zealots I think were emp+snipe². So I'd reduce DT a lot, maybe 100 points max, but increase zealots to around 50.
Some suggestions for more modes: Immortals: In a hallway that can hold maybe 4-5 immortals wide you have 8 immortals vs 60 roaches. With just attack move there will be 16-20 roaches left, but with a warp prism where I move immortals without shield and then immortals with low life to the back I've managed to have 5 immortals in the end. So a minigame where you use warp prism to keep immortals alive vs a lot of roaches (8v50 would be easier and maybe possible to keep all 8 immortals alive). Hallway should be so long you can just kite them that way.
HT Wack-A-Mole: Have templars stand around a 3x3x3 area where enemy units with 20 life spawn, and the grid is made up of friendly units with 100 health or something. The point of the game is to keep all your units alive for as long as possible, and if you lose any of your units either by the enemy units attacking or by missing with storm twice(or storm+attack).
Thanx for a fun map!
i love this map! cant w8 for new minigames, one of the best map out here!
1) stalker... funny but i get gold after 1 minute.. quite easy
2) baneling, nice but not "so funny" maybe add more marines, or
3) sentry are funny, make more minigames with sentry (maybe sentry + ht) (i got silver first try)
4) ghost are funny, make more minigames with them. dt give to many points, meed some tune on points..
First time playing Sniper School i got 7150 points. - And I didn't even feel I was doing well at all. But then Stalkers, yiks, I managed to keep 7 alive, but keeping all 8, dang -that's hard. - You guys playing on Fastest? I got 171 zerg kills in forcefield frenzy. Played it twice - (Use sentrys to clean up leftover hydras while collosi moves on ) I got silver on Banalings, at the last moment I realized I could run my last marine, which was cool.
Fun map :). Looking forward to other challenges added to it!
The fact that it keeps your scores is awesome too. - And you added the whole 'Beat your score' stuff.
P.S. For some reason I kept accidentally hitting 'Quit' - after selecting a mission. - I'm not sure why, but I really wanted the 'Start Game' button where the Quit was... - Anyone else do this? - After doing it a couple times I learned not to... lol.
A note for the Sniper map. It is nearly impossible to get gold if you are running low settings because it is impossible to see DTs because you don't even see a shimmer when you are on low settings. :( It just becomes guess and check and looking for unit bottlenecks.
pretty interesting map, hope you'll add more games to it
Stalker Skirmish got gold in 2nd try first try i failed miserably cuz i just blinked with the stalker that took dmg, next try i exploited the weird roach ai which made it pretty easy
Baneling Breakout took me 3 tries for gold and i think its the best balanced one theoretical its pretty easy... until you do one small mistake
Forcefield Frenzy nearly 300 points 2nd try, find it really to easy with regenerating shields some well placed manual collossus hits and you'll always finish it a wave before the next comes
Sniper School got gold 1st try, just sniped HT and watched out for DT, i believe i killed 8 DT which are already close to the gold points
one of the best map i'v played atm.
pls keep adding scenarios, i cant w8 to play more!
Added localization for en-GB. Thanks pixartist for helping me figure it out.
Thanks for the feedback guys, it's really helpful.
Regarding Stalker Skirmish - this one is really interesting to me because a lot of people are complaining that it's impossible or too hard, while others find it very easy. I think there's too much of a trick to it, to where if you know the right way of going about it, it's not too difficult, but if you're trying it the wrong way you can't possibly win. I'd like to smooth out the difficulty curve a little bit.
Baneling Breakout - My original idea is that you'd actually have to kill the banelings up to a certain point, and then run from them as long as possible. A lot of people tend to just run away the entire time, which is an interesting strategy. I'm going to modify this so killing a baneling gives you a 10 second time bonus, and then greatly increase the time requirements for medalling. This should make it a little more interesting.
Forcefield Frenzy - The gold medal requirement on this is very difficult right now. I'm going to lower it to 150 kills, which is around my personal high score after a LOT of practice. One piece of advice I'd offer is that you shouldn't worry about running out of energy, you'll be long past the gold requirements before that happens even if you double-FF the bridges. Also, microing the colossus helps greatly.
Sniper School - Originally you only had one ghost and got points for hitting HTs and lost points for hitting Zealots and it was basically a mouse accuracy trainer. It wasn't very fun though. Having multiple ghosts allows you to have them work together - for example, it takes the EMPs of two ghosts to take down an archon, and sometimes you'll emp a DT and he'll move just out of range, so you can use the next ghost to snipe him. My original goal was that you could get bronze with just HTs, silver would require a handful of other units, and gold would require you to be really on the ball with DTs. But apparently quite a few people have requested it be made harder, so I'll be raising the gold requirements.
Regarding localization - I apologize this map doesn't work for EU clients, I'll try to get that fixed ASAP. In the latest patch notes it mentioned something about the editor automatically generating localizations now so I assumed I didn't have to do anything manually. Apparently not!
Lots of fun. - Stalker Skirmish is a bit easy. I suggest putting in a minigame for Stalkers vs. Zerglings and the goal is to survive as long as possible. You can blink out individual Stalkers and make them last quite a while.
-Baneling Breakout would be more fun if it were just one marine, not 4.
-Forcefield Frenzy is hard as hell, mainly because your units move so slowly and there's so much distance to cover. Also, the bridges are JUST wide enough to where a single forcefield won't block out hydras, they occasionally get by. May want to up the attack range on the sentry attack to help the Colossus out, since Hydras have the same (or greater) range.
- Sniper School would be better if it were just one ghost with infinite energy. Let Zealots take one hit to die, Dark Templars need to be toned down point-wise.
love the concept of mini games, and micro intensive fighting. Though might want to look into balance issues. Very impressed with this map considering its the first version released
Really cool! Looking forward to trying more mini games when they're ready : )
Also, I found the point system for the Sniper School far too easy. I had 7250 near the end. Maybe making Dark Templars worth less would make it more of a challenge to hit Gold. Forcefield Frenzy was probably the most challenging IMO.
PLEASE, PLEASE localize your maps GOD DAMN IT. This is like the 5th map i have to make the localization for today...
