Well, I agree with you. And thanks for the compliment :) I was thinking of trying to incorporate some ruins into the terrain at various points, though I suppose that wouldn't help things too much.
I like the volcano idea, I'm just worried about texturing. I currently have the following 8 textures:
Bel Shir Brush
Bel Shir Grass Light
Bel Shir Grass Dark
Bel Shir Bricks Large
Agria Dirt
Xil Rock Cracked
Xil Sand
Xil Dirt Cracked.
I've used everything besides Bel Shir Bricks. Do you think it's possible to put a volcano together with one texture in place of Bel Shir Bricks with some doodad work?
That would be awesome. I think it's not only that fantasy settings are easier to work with, but the fact that someone could go display most fantasy worlds(including ones they have created) with relative. For example, LoTR maps. Because some of the models were somewhat generic, it gave the player more free reign as to where he took things. You could make a map which looked like it did indeed take place in another universe.
I think it's much more difficult to make something in Galaxy that doesn't scream STARCRAFT!!!. Without, that is, going to further lengths with WoW or custom models - which I feel might become more common as time goes on.
I also feel myself wanting the simpler things that WC3 would have had. Like trees which could be harvested and topple.
I wonder if, in some fashion, the fact that this is a Starcraft game limits the custom scene at all. I almost feel like the units and world of WC3 lent themselves more easily to new worlds and stories. While with SCII, the places you can take your map with it still being believable are relatively limited.
It won't let me edit my posts - I get a 404 page and picture of a kitten.
Here are two more shots of the map: the first is to illustrate the effects of scaling the trees up. This is to make them seem to loom over the character, making the island more "wild."
The other is a picture of the island with sunbeams. These weather doodads are mostly missing from the map at this point, and I'll add them in later.

I went to change a texture, and I found I could not. It was replaced by text, and went I went to change it, the text disappeared. :/
Can anyone help me with this?

This is awkward...
I've seen him referred to as "she" on multiple occasions.

Alright, the second starting location is done. It may look close to the other, but the only way to get there is to take the loooooooong way around.
Might still need a touch-up in some places, as always.

I know :|
I think most are different though. I think most people are putting there on spin on the genre.

Your wish has been granted ;)
Also added in some wildlife to give people an idea of what it will look when it's done.

I heard the resource system was a bit of a pain overall. I'll try to overhaul that in a logical fashion ;)
