Serval guys asked me to create an Tutorial for this stuff, so im doing this right now.
Some of you may know Fasstest maps like they were in broodwar. 50 mineral patches stacked to ensure 50 miners can harvest at the same time.
tests showed that this method just doesnt work in StarCraft2. all you get is miners, that weirdly slide around after some time, and lots of lag due to stacked mineral patches.
i found an easy way to fix this, and make it like in the old broodwar days - this is used for fasstest maps, but probably also usable for other maps.
dont ask me why i do things like i do them, thats just the easiest and best working way i found, and i like it.
Step 1 - Creating the Base.
- Open your Data Editor and search for the Rich Vespine Geyser.
- Duplicate it with all models, behaviours and stuff.
- Doubleclick that copied Geyser, and rename it to whatever you want.
Step 2 - Modifying the Mineralsource
- Click on the Renamed geyser, and select the root data option
- Scroll down and look for the "(None) - Resource State" and "(None) - Resource Type" values
Resource state is initially on "Raw" for the geyser, resource type is vespine - because its an vespine geyser.
Raw means, its not harvestable until an building is placed on it, like an refinery.
set the Resource State option to "Harvestable" and the Resource Type to "Minerals" - or whatever you want to mine out of it.
if you would place it now, you would have an vespine geyser, where youre able to mine minerals from.
all we have to do now, is changeing the model to something, that looks more like minerals.
- Select the Rich Vespine Geyser Copy out of the Left window found under Models, search for the "Model" entry on the right, double clik it and browse for your model you want to use.
in this Tutorial im using the Char Crystal model, because it looks way cooler than the minerals from SC2, and i liked it on my first tests.
- Scroll a little bit down, and find the entry "Selection Radius" - change it from 1.5 to 0.5.
this value determines the selection circle. due to the vespine geyser is a way bigger model its too big for our char crystal model.
so set it down to 0.5 and its perfectly scaled.
Step 3 - Harvesters
To ensure that more than one miner can harvest at 1 mineralpatch at the same time, we have to edit the gather behaviour on miners.
- search in the Data Editor for an harvester, like an SCV
- go to its "Abilities - SCV Gather" on the left window.
- on the right, search for "Flag Array", and modify it - if you double click your only option is to turn on "Bypass Resource Queue" - turn it on.
this makes it possible for harvesters to harvest on an mineral field, if someones already on it - up to unlimited.
do this for every races harvester, youll need to.
The model in the Editor is still an vespine geyser - dont know how to change that, but ingame it works.
My critique for this tutorial:
You should add a screenshot! An image is worth a thousand words. :)
Step 1 is not needed: Why duplicate something when you can just edit the original? (Many people duplicate units unnecessarily...)
Step 2 should utilize search: Instead of telling them to scroll down, just use search or filter or whatever for "Resource".
Step 2 has a repeating spelling mistake: "an vespine geyser" → should be → "a vespene geyser".
Step 2 is too long.
Step 2 is hard to understand... "Left window found under models"? Okay...
Step 2 is too long. (Or did I say that already?)
Additional spelling mistakes:
"Serval" → Several
"an Tutorial" → a tutorial
"im" → I'm
"doesnt" → doesn't
"dont" → don't
"youre" → you're
"changeing" → changing
"clik" → click
"im" → I'm
"someones" → someone is
"youll" → you'll
"dont" → don't
I didn't bother fixing grammar at all and I left out some ambiguous spelling mistakes like "behaviours", "Doubleclick", and "ingame".

Dude, stop criticizing and making corrections to his post. No one cares, jesus. I mean really, leave him alone on it.
Edit: Nobody cares about spelling errors you douchebag. Wth is wrong with people?

first of all, sorry that im not an native english speaker. but you seem to know what stuff i wanted to say, so whats the matter? were in the internet. thanks.
screenshots - already made some, will add them later if i find the time.
well if you dont wanna hve gas in the map, sure, dont duplicate it.. i wanna have gas in the map, so i duplicated it, and using mineral patches doesnt work like it should because there are some weird problems while mining.
sorry again for these spelling mistakes, but again i dont care as long as everyone understands what to do.
this is not a spelling-contest.
I have a question about this, does it still classify as a melee map?
On another note, it really would be nice to copy+paste your messages into Microsoft Word or similar, run a spell check, grammar check, and then post. It becomes easier to read and understand, not that people are unable to otherwise.
im not sure about that melee map thing.
there is no more "use map settings" in starcraft 2 like it was in broodwar. it looks like every map is now just automatically started with the settings.im not sure about it, sorry.
to the grammar stuff..
like you said, it is understandable - not easy, but it works.
words like "youll" or "dont" really dont make the difference, just because i forgot the '.
youre able to understand them, so what?
sometimes i probably forget some letters, thats because my keyboard is fubar - and im sorry for that.
also creating logical english sentences isnt my best, i often use german sentence-builds while typing/speaking english, but even this is understandable.
im sorry for that, i will try to find an grammar check for the next time ill post an tutorial.
I understood you perfectly, and to be honest didn't even read any mistakes as i read through. I guess some peoples brains can't unconsciously assemble imperfect words/sentences for them, and they have to consciously read every word, therefore spotting the mistakes. By spotting a mistake this poor person gains an ego boost, boosting his confidence, giving him a self achieved sense of authority, which he then needs to inflict on his ungrammatical victim.
dis iz da internetz not a exam, y point out somebody elses pitfallz when u iz realy highlighting ur own inablility to read sumtin witout it being 100% perfect. Im sori but da self appointed internet grammer police really get on my tits! Im all for the fusion of internet/txt spelling into the Oxford dictionary, to many letterz in wordz n to many rulez 2da whole ting.
I have one question though, does your tutorial also fix the starting location? For me, the main spawns far away from the minerals, not where it is supposed to be.
And I have one thing to say to those guys who want their map to be classified as a melee map, you have the option to check your Map Status:
Map -> Map Status
There the program will give the reasons why you map wont be classified as melee, is there are no reasons, then it is melee!
Messing with the Data -> No more Melee for you, that means fastest maps with solution for better gameplay wont be melee anymore, instead you have to go for a fastmap :/
Very nicely done. I do have one question, however. I've been trying to find a way to change the actor's color to distinguish between the different types of resources I have on my map, but the things I have tried do not seem to work. Any suggestions?
Just some clarification on the tutorial.
Two questions-
1. Do we need to use a rich geyser?
2. Technically if we don't want it to look fancy can we just do step 3 or does that make two many units in one place and slidy or whatever you called it?
Also in step 3 you said it places as a vespene geyser. There is a data field for editor model if you do want to change it. Along with like editor tooltip (useless lol) and editor name (generally copy of unit name unless edit).
Hi PatchOne,
I'm pretty Noob when it comes to editing maps. I really don't get Step 2. Where is or what is the "root data option". I'm struggling with finding the Mineralsource.
"Step 2 - Modifying the Mineralsource - Click on the Renamed geyser, and select the root data option - Scroll down and look for the "(None) - Resource State" and "(None) - Resource Type" values"
as for the rest I think I can find what you've outlined.
PatchOne if you want, you could PM me your tutorial and i can grammar check it for you before you post it. Automated grammar checks are generally not as good as a translation by a person, and they generally get confused by game terms.
Hey did you ever figure out how to fix the start point problem? Im trying to make a fastest map and i cant get my command centers, nexus, etc to load right next to my minerals like i wnat it to. If you can help me out id greatly apprciate it. Ive been searching the net all night. can anyone help me out?
oh well, i never looked into this thread again... DIDNT knew ITS still there and people using this as a real tutorial.
im not really sure if this tutorial is still up2date and if these things work because all this was done in beta stage of the game.
will probably check next days and update it if neccessary.
and for all those grammar flamers, i dont give a damn. i dont have to write perfect english, and as long as anyone out there is able to understand my text, everything is fine.
Hi Im kind of a noob too :( I understand pretty much everything else, but in step 2 where is the "root data option"? Please reply ASAP. Great Tutorial!
Where the crap is the stupid "root Data Option"
I get extremely claustrophobic and angry if I can't figure out the editor, which is why I don't use it much, but seriously, where the F is the option?
Maybe it no longer exists since beta after all the original post is just under 2 years old.
You no longer need several stacked mineral stacks because you can just modify the Resource behaviour to have infinite capacity and to have it harvest massive amounts per trip.
