One question... Some of you might know my map "Gates of Darkness" i have published here. Were it possible to rename it "Prison's heaven", change a few models, use a different tileset, change some descriptions to fit the new setting, and just spam doodads and claim its another map?
If not, i have an idea on how to heavily simplify and modify all my triggers. If i do that in addition, can i claim its a different map? Because after that, the *only* thing that's the same as before is the data editor and unit placements, and some triggers. i also have the right to use triggers i made in previous maps, since they are mine, right? And if that won't work, can i stuff everything i did in the data editor into a mod (ugh... so much copy pasting...), then remove all of it from the data editor and add my mod?
If i do all that, i'm pretty sure that it can be considered a new map since i changed basically everything :p and if there's problems with the triggers, i'll simply make them library and import it xD What an easy way to officially change your map, yet keep it the same :p
And after that, i will still have my map "Gates of Darkness", in case blizzard tries to pull off some of that legal crap on me some people here mentioned. Gates of darkness uses the very long unsimplified triggers, doesnt use the mod, and doesnt use the library, and has a different terrain, so they cant claim i stole it from them. i can test my entry by testing gates of darkness, since i will only create my "new" map in the last week before the contest and Gates of Darkness is not my entry, yet gameplaywise identical.
Anyone think what i wrote will work? and ive gotta check what countries are eligible...
Yea, but im pretty sure that they will count previously published things... Unless you of course pull it down from every website and battle.net 2 minutes before you submit it.
Okay.. I really want to enter this. I've been working on a map for awhile now haven't published or anything like that. But... let's say I win the contest... I can't publish on bnet after? :O?!? Or let's say I don't win, I cant publish on bnet after??!?
Am I mistaken or is that what it says...
Quote:
Sponsor Use of Entries. You hereby agree that in consideration of your being allowed the chance to enter the Contest, you hereby grant Blizzard Entertainment, Inc., a perpetual, non-exclusive, worldwide license and right to utilize the entry materials that you submit to Sponsor in connection with the Contest (collectively, "Entry Materials"). The Entry Materials will not be returned to any entrant. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, you acknowledge that Sponsor shall have the right to use, modify, reproduce, publish, perform, display on all forms of media, distribute, make derivative works of and otherwise commercially and noncommercially exploit the Entry Materials in perpetuity and throughout the universe, in any manner or medium now existing or hereafter developed, without separate compensation to you or any other person or entity. You agree to take, at Sponsor's expense, any further action (including, without limitation, execution of affidavits and other documents) reasonably requested by Sponsor to effect, perfect or confirm Sponsor's rights as set forth above in this paragraph 7.
And then right underneith this it says...
Quote:
Original Work of Authorship. You hereby warrant and represent that (a) you own all rights to all Entry Materials submitted by you; and (b) all such Entry Materials are original works of authorship on your part and have not been copied, in whole or in part, from any other work and do not violate, misappropriate or infringe any copyright, trademark or other proprietary right of any other person or entity.
So I'm VERY confused.. Do i get to publish and have rights to my map? Or is it officially blizzards after I win or don't win.
Sorry for double posting.. but is there any more news on this?
I REALLY want to know if i should enter or not... If blizzard makes it so I am not allowed to publish after winning or not winning I do not want to enter this contest... If I can publish my map after then yes i do want to enter!!
As I read it you grant blizzard the rights to use the map you've made, but you yourself still retain the rights to use it as well. Since there is no clause mentioning that you give up your rights on the given map.
The Original Work of Authorship is just a legal agreement on your behalf that the work that you submit to the contest is actually yours, and you are not infringing on anyone's copyright. Has nothing to do with which rights you still have or don't have on the work you submit.
On a side note. I have several concerns about this contest and the actual quality of maps submitted. Primarily is the short deadline, September 11th is a very short deadline and IMO quality and polish can't be rushed. Blizzard should know this better than anyone considering they continually push back release dates for the sake of highly polished and quality games.
Secondly there is no room for group works. as has been mentioned before. And if you want good quality a team is the best and fastest way to get there. The prizes leave no room for teamwork so I find it highly unlikely that anyone will bother to post a group project.
I certainly hope they have end up have high quality maps to choose from but the nature of this contest leaves me doubtful of that result.
Well I came to the conclusion you guys did on the whole, multiplayer testing aspect, as so I emailed Blizzard, I will update you if I get any response.
Could the rules regarding map publication be clarified?
As a map must be published to Blizzard servers for one to test its multiplayer functionality, I do not see how I could test said functionality without both releasing my map and exposing it to the Starcraft community, brining my authorship into question.
Could you clarify for me either a procedure you would deem aceptable, or wether publication of partial or deliberately corrupted subsystems from my map, in order to test functionality, would void my claim to the content as origional and or unreleased.
Nice letter. I want to know Blizzard's answer. However, I think they will answer us only if no good maps were submitted. I am not sending my maps until they explain this, and I recommend you to do the same.
They will only respond us if they look at the maps submitted and say "Holy shit, there's only crappy maps here! We need to answer sc2mapster, so they can send the good ones. I can't broadcast these maps on Blizzcon!"

fun fact:
the sentence says that once you submit it, you WILL (future tense, not past or present tense) not publish or display it in any way.
Yea, but im pretty sure that they will count previously published things... Unless you of course pull it down from every website and battle.net 2 minutes before you submit it.

I doubt it.
Where do you see that? I didn't see that in any of the rules... (Didn't look that hard either!)

Hey guyz, I found more news in this thread:

It's a huge thread about this map contest. Check it out.

:\ I read it and it doesn't sound too good... I just really wish blizzard would confirm this...

Hello
The official rules regarding the Starcraft two custom map contest (as sourced here http://eu.blizzard.com/en-gb/community/contests/sc2maps/rules.html ) state that entries must be "original, unreleased, UMS custom map[s]".
Thank you for your time,
Mah Name
I'm uncertain about this, but is using rrowland's WASD movement library allowed?
I'm sure he gave it to the public for public use, but I'm just wondering if I'm allowed to use that in my map. And credits to him :)

Ditto, I am not submitting my map till this is clarified as well.
They will give to you 5k and make 5,000k with your map, and you will be happy because 5k is a lot of money.
For kids...
Gimme 5k $ then if you don't care about money :D
Any confirmations from blizzards? Any responses to the emails you sent? I haven't received one yet have you?
