I want to introduce you SC2 map called XPDotA - Xel'Naga Prophecy
I was making this map for Blizzard SC2 Map Contest, which was finished, as you all knows with announce of Blizzard Dota.
Development took over 4 month and now I want to show you what I have done.
I tried to recreate best, in my opinion, core mechanics from original DotA, like armor system/attributes/level up/revive/miss etc
Current version of map have 10 heroes/40 abilities/50 items
I have made Ranking system, which I plan to do more informative and smart later.
My plans for version 2.0 is
- 20 heroes, 80 abilities, 60 items
- New gameplay features like, random objectives which should provoke teams to fight in the field to get team bonuses
- Any other ideas that I receive from players
I am looking for your feedback at playxpdota.com, or you can post it here and I will reply as soon as possible.
Those random objecttives sounds fun, maybe if you will focus on them, it will make this map really unique.
You could for expample split the map into 1 minute parts, in each of which you will have a different objective (like killing creeps, neutrals, capturing points of whatever). Whichever team will get more points (like kill more creeps in creep killing phase) will get a "Xel'naga artefact" (a second resource, instead of gas). There will be a Xel'naga temple in every base, where you can spend this resource to get some permanent bonuses for your team, like stronger creeps or more creeps (expensive), or some instant bonuses like invulnerable towers for 10 sec (like glyph in DotA). Whole team will have this resource together and if someone wants to buy something, the team will vote for it. (player who offered it count as he voted FOR it and other players will get some small dialog window in the corner, where they can votre FOR or AGAINST. if 2 more players will vote for it, the voting ends instantly and the bonus is bought. If 3 will vote against, its canceled. The voting will last 20 seconds for permanent bonuses and 5 seconds for instant bonuses)
All the events doesnt have to be objectives. Sometimes it can be like stronger creeps for that minute, not working shops, instant respawn, punishing death (you lose more minerals if dying) or whatever.
I like the way you are thinking. Setting objective like killing creaps or capturing points is good. I think this could be done in way of short mini game. Like 3 points spawn in random points, the team which control 2 of them after 2 minutes of event start, will get unique artifact, which can be used for power up your creep lane for 5 minuts or restoring half of chosen tower HP, or making it invulnerable for 30 seconds.
I think this shouldn't be done by voting system. There should be someone who win artifact and can use it wise. Or he can sell it.
Also, doing a shared resources or artifacts isn't good idea I think. Players not always fair and know what to do, so let them think for themselfs.
But maybe all this random objectives should be planed and known by players. That it will start each 7th minute of a game. so every one will be ready for that game.
I am currently working on popularity of the map, so players could find their opponents without waiting for 10 minuts. I am posting information about map on every sc2 community site I found and keep working there, answering, geting feedback and so on.
If anyone Likes what I am doing and can give me links to sc2 community sites that you know, pls PM me links to them. This can save my work from dieing in bnet2.0 rating system.
You know...what's ironic is...I was actually thinking of random objectives earlier yesterday. I thought that you could create variables and triggers to make a quest page look like this...

...it will then register the (Quest_type_random_variable_sub) and create the required units, items, etc. Then, once that's done, you can create the (Quest_reward_random_variable) once you finish the quest. Like? I'll see if I can create some sort of example later... hope your DotA works out! :D

xpDota current situation
I have made 5v5 mode and map goes in 3 days down from top 20 to top 200. I like blizzard popularity system, which make this possible.
What to tell you how it works. You startup your new map.
1. Map with 1 player needed to be played, with mid duration of game in 30 minuts.
1000 players run play this map, and game popularity will be 2000 games per hour. You will be at top 10 of the list and your map will start growing, so many players whould try it.
At this point, any map one first page automatically gains attention for new players which also try it. And so on.
2. Map with 5v5 players needed, and same 30 minuts durations.
We'll try to get same 1000 players. At this case map popularity will be (1000/(num_of_players))*2games per hour = 200
So in first and second case, we got 1000 players that like the game. But in first case, map will be at top 5, and will get lot more players cause of everyone see it. In case two it will have 48th place, and popularity will start falling cause, there is almost no new players at 4th page.
I guess blizzard should make popularity system based on # of players that play map in last hours but not # of games. This would represent real popularity. But blizzard don't think this way.
To be honest your map is not on the level of quality as you might think. I played your map but I still find Sotis to be a better Dota clone at the moment.. So, yeah, I think the popularity system isn`t entirely to blame here;p.

I have tryed this mod but every tooltip it's bugged, and a lot of trigger too...
Everything says something like "Param/..." what's wrong?

I was playing this map today and something strange happened to me - when a guy from the other team left, i suddenly lost all my items o.O
Also, are you shure zerg buildings should spawn broodling when protoss buildings dont?

I also found this bug, that items disapear, i am looking way to fix it. This is some kind of critical bugs
Of course, there should be no broodlings) i will fix this soon.
