Please note, this contest is being hosted by Blizzard. If you want to participate, you'll need to submit entries to them, look at the Deadlines & Submissions section below.
Something you may also want to note... The last rule of the contest (also seen below) grants Blizzard licensing rights to your map. Otherwise, don't forget to promote SC2Mapster in your Loading Screens and so on, :).
If you have any questions, feel free to ask in this thread first. If you don't receive a response, try sending an e-mail to [email protected].
What to do?
You've conquered the single-player campaign and climbed the multiplayer ladder, but do you have what it takes to be a StarCraft II custom map designer?
In Blizzard's first-ever StarCraft II Custom Map Contest, they're challenging you to craft the most fun, creative, and polished custom map that the galaxy’s ever seen.
If you think you've got the skills, fire up the StarCraft II Editor that came with your copy of the game and get started. The Editor is a powerful, robust, and complete development tool, and it's everything you'll need to build your creation. Keep in mind that we’re looking for originality, innovation, and fun, so whether you want to make the next DotA, craft a mini-RPG, or concoct a third-person shooter, let your imagination run wild.
Even if you've got some experience creating custom maps, you'll want to kick your efforts into overdrive for this one, because the stakes are high.
Deadlines & Submission
Map makers will have until September 11 to submit their entries.
Must be in English and not feature explicit or obscene language.
Must only feature music from Blizzard products or of my own original composition.
Must only contain images, sounds, voice tracks, designs, and other copyrighted content that you obtained from Blizzard, is your original creation, or that you have properly licensed for use in the map.
Must follows the game's End User License Agreement and Terms of Use from which it was taken, as well as the Blizzard Video Policy.
By submitting the map you grant licensing rights to Blizzard Entertainment, and will not display, post, or share it until after the contest closes on September 11, 2010.
Must be under 10mb.
Reward
Three (3) qualified entrants will be chosen by Sponsor as the "Grand Prize Winners," and will each win a prize package consisting of the following:
One (1) check in the amount of $5,000.00.
One (1) trip to BlizzCon 2010 in Anaheim, California that includes round trip coach air fare from the regional airport nearest the Winner's residence.
Two (2) nights lodging at a hotel in Anaheim chose by Blizzard, with an aggregate approximate value for the trip of $600.00
One (1) ticket to "BlizzCon 2010" with an approximate retail value of $150.00.
Your map featured in the BlizzCon 2010 SC2 Demo area.
As an added bonus, if you promote SC2Mapster, we'll throw in a full year's worth of Curse Premium.
I could probably fare pretty well in this! Love Blizzard for doing this contest... lol I wonder if their internal mapmakers are like "damn I want in this! $5000 more salary!"
I've decided not to enter though because I wouldn't want the trip to Blizzcon, I'd just want the $5k. So would be kind of a waste.
Well, it doesn't say anywhere that the prizes are non-transferable. Not telling Blizzard isn't exactly the point since if anything, I'd rather have Blizzard credit me and keep the prizes.
Edit: Scratch that. It says they are non-transferable.
Sure all the trips and such for blizzcon will have the author's name on it, non transferable. But the money can.
Another question, they said the map has to be unreleased, original, and the submit page has to agree not to release or post anything until the contest is over ? So that's mean it has to be flat out new ? Not something we beta developed in here ?

This is flat out ridiculous. I have no idea what laws they continue referring to when they prohibit us from participating from contests. Also, for the WoW Arena tournament they managed to bend it in such a way that everyone could participate: they didn't have any prizes but after the tournament they invited the winners over for the grand finals.

That's what I understood from the rules. And you won't have many rights to it even after the contest.
By submitting the map you grant licensing rights to Blizzard Entertainment, and will not display, post, or share it until after the contest closes on September 11, 2010.
This has me worried. I'd really want to submit my primary project, but at the same time I want to continue to work on my project and "grant licensing rights" could mean anything from simply allowing them to display your project, to removing it from your hands entirely.

It's just IMPOSSIBLE to make a map without displaying it first. It's the same to say that you have to make a map, but you cannot test if your map works. Every time I publish a map on battle.net, I find a few bugs.
Anyway, the BEST maps are published. So, we cannot send maps that were published before?

Private publish and testing. Seems like team/groups should've been a better approach for this kind of contest then individual
I can't even take part of this contest because I'm Italian and Italy is not included in the required countries...
However it seems that they want a new fresh map never seen before on bnet, mappers that kept their work unpublished are lucky :|

I'll get some more information on this. Because... That means maps that are already published, like SotiS, etc, are ineligible.

Ooh.
Do you seriously believe they'll allow the advertisement of this site?
Gotta join, not gotta win however ...
A bit of promotion didn't hurt, not like you did commercial advertising or w/e

Plus of course my RPG is taking forever...
Best of luck to everyone :D
Only a select number of countries are allowed to participate. What a shame: I'm sad.
Do you think they would accept it if it were submitted by someone in an eligible country on behalf of the real author?
Of course I do. There's a section on Sponsorship and Credits in the rules, they're both OK.
Well... Sure. But if the person submitting won, they'd be the winner. You basically would have to not tell Blizzard, :P.

HuH... But not exactly best way working with unfinished tool, or tool that has lots of holes that needs patching.
Or we are just stupid.
I got one idea, but I cant get coders for it. We're like 4 or 5 model makers in a team...
BTW deadline is kinda short...
4 or 5 model makers and kerensky makes a sweet map, all you need is a few decent triggerers and you got yourself a winner
@Gaurus: Go
Not going to be easy since they still use the 10MB limit for this contest
