I'm looking for some inspiration for a new project of mine.
I have a few ideas pitched already.
However, I want to know if you guys out there have any ideas of what could make my campaign cool?
What would YOU like to see of new things gameplay-wise?
For example:
Do you "as a terran player" want more aggressive missions instead of the standard turtle-cheese-missions? And if yes, how should they play out?
choises which can allign you to evil or good and affect plot
Thats exactly what I hate in modern campaigns.

If your campaign map will have more than 1 map, than do what Homeworld 2 did. Have resources (mined and unmined) and units saved into the next map...
(Homeworld 2 was the best RTS campaign I ever played...)
Sounds like a great idea for a sort of "adventure" campaign, and somehow like the Terran Campaign.
However, having the ressources and units saved into the next map would be like snow-balling, wouldn't it?
For example;
If one person plays the campaign and gets a lot of units/ressources every time he plays a mission, wouldn't he have a ridicolous amount of ressources and units in the end missions?
The difficulty could be made harder, if the player gets to the last missions, but that would ruin the experience for the mere casual player.
Honestly..? All I want it a plot that is not horrible combined with dialogs that don't want me to quit computer games and missions that have interesting themes and variety. For gimmicks like karma we have regular custom maps ;/
(I guess that little protoss campaign experiment is over?)
Aaw, what a shame, I like protossy stuff. Well, better luck on your next undertaking, hope it works out and we'll get ourselves something nice to play.
No matter what you do, be sure to have a great gameplay variety from mission to mission. Add in an interesting and engaging storyline, and you already beaten most of the maps out there.
To start with, everything the Blizzard campaign has. A good storyline, interesting cinematics, decent balance, new units integrated into the story... And some kind of choice never hurts; it doesn't have to be complex evil/good like Mass Effect, but even something simple as being to choose which of the next two mandatory missions you'll do first can make it feel nice.
With that said, at least one 'gimmick' that makes your campaign unique. It doesn't have to be something hella-crazy, but consider for example choosing to align with protoss or terran halfway along the campaign and sticking with that race from then on. Or something like the mercenaries from the WOL campaign. Something that gives your campaign a little edge, without ruining the balance of the campaign. It does need to have some kind of function, which is the hard part.
Since I am one of the very few active campaign makers only thing what I want to see is any kind of campaign really :)
Would be cool if campaign has:
- Interesting gameplay.
- Regular Starcraft missions. By this I mean regular build & destroy missions and all kind of "normal" missions, not something "custom" and "unique" maps that have nothing to do with normal Starcraft concept. (RPG games for example)
- Good story line
- Voice acting
- Cinematics
- Choices that affect gameplay and / or story somehow
- New units
- Difficulty selection
I think the campaign Blizzard made was well-done, but I didn't like how you could pick the missions and the WAY it affected the story. I would prefer a more direct approach.

I can understand that. I wasn't even thinking of the WoL campaign when I mentioned player choice. Did you play the SC1... extra campaign? I forgot where it was from (I think it was Blizzard-made but released for free as DLC), but I remember one of the main characters was Alan Schezar. In that 5 mission long campaign you have a choice of siding with team A or team B in mission 2 or so, and this choice will benefit how you play out map 3 through 5. The maps are the same, but your starting position, race and allegiances differ. The problem with the WoL campaign was that every map was more or less mandatory if you wanted to do a good play-through; if you didn't do all other maps, you'd A) just be speedrushing and B) miss a lot of important units in the final maps. Adding small buffs, upgrades or weak new units can easily suffice.
Nice, a campaign discussion. I think I am above average interested in campaigns, and here are some suggestions from my point of view.
I have to admit that I seek some kind of superficial «professionalism»- impression in the game aspect of a campaign. I might not continue the campaign if my first impressions are that it is lacking severely in gameplay or terrain, or triggers, etc. You don’t have to be performing superbly on all these things, but they need to be on some basic level to sustain my interest. Place a few doodads and make some triggered challenges, and that’s a good start.
In first impression it doesn’t matter if the gameplay is immensely fun, this is a campaign and it need pretty terrain, or else players might not stay long enough for the fun part. But at the same time there has to be something going on in the terrain too, so it can’t be just pretty pictures. I seek a whole campaign experience, so every aspect must be covered. Story is important, but it has to be in a game-friendly format, use the old saying “show, don’t tell”. Have dialogs short and compact.
Such things will keep my interest, then you can move over to gimmicks and choice and what have you.
On the subject of choice campaigns I might mention a gimmick I had on a Warcraft3 campaign I was making some time ago.
It was a choice campaign that branched into two paths in the first mission, and then both the two second missions branched into two paths as well. The campaign had four different endings.
Let me summarize:
You were a demon slave, first mission you could chose to escape or stay. If you escaped, you could chose to side with the humans or the orcs. If you stayed, you could be rescued by night elves or stay loyal to the demons. The faction you allied with decided which faction you would control in the last mission, where I was to make a remake of the last Night Elf mission ”Eternity’s End”
I never finished that campaign, but I hope someone might be inspired by this concept :)
Good luck with your campaign, looking forward to play it when it's done ;)
What I'm looking in a campaign....
Well, as you are making your campaign by using a map editor of an existing game, allowing to build/train new units/buildings that were in the game but we weren't able to build, or even completly new unit :)
Also, storyline I love is where you play terrorist, but terrorist who are in the good-side, like WoL campaign and Hands of Humanity of Terhonator.
About missions, mostly normal games asTerhonator said. Infiltration mission are also very good :)
Like somes peoples said, communication between characters. Something I really love is to find a way to communicate with ennemy's boss and to feel he is scary because he begins to know you will win, even if he has a huge army :)
Not choosing if you are on the good side or evil side is better, but, choosing what mission you will play when you want isn't a bad idea, it depends on how you will use this concept. In WoL, it wasn't bad, but Blizzard could do better.
Terhonator, sorry but I'll take your campaign as exemple
In Hands of Humanity, you could choose missions you want to play, when you want if there was a "map series" where you destroy base, one where where you steal military secret, one where you help civilians against zergs and minestar, etc.. Well, when you choose which mission you want to do when you want, they must all have the same goal, they shouldn't be like the tosh misson where the goal was to free his friends.
I don't really think anyone is going to be able to do some really awesome ones until blizzard adds some sort of campaign option. Not to mention the map file size limit.

Well, yes and no. I never got to write a rich and interesting plot for the campaign, so eventually I gave up. : )

Quality and a sensible storyline ~
Avoid pathos, bad characters, quests for magic crystals. Avoid SC2 campaign basically.
The three main things I would look for:
1. Something that is difficult. 2. Good storytelling. 3. Effective use of Dialogs / Mission Intros.
To start with, everything the Blizzard campaign has. A good storyline, interesting cinematics, decent balance, new units integrated into the story... Trust me. I have a brother who's playing in high master, who's testing the highest difficulty of the maps. IT WILL be hard.

Terhonator, since you mentioned voice acting - Are you familliar with the programs you use for it?
@Wacclian321: Go
-Remove all Marine units
-Add more Banelings!
I would like to get lets say 1 upgrade point after each mission and spend it on unique upgrade for some unit type.

Like a cheesy remake of the Wings of Liberty campaign?
