Hi guys, been around the mod community forever, I was a moderator over at wc3campaigns during their peak and have been involved in dozens of projects over the years, maps and tools. I picked up the modding crack, as I like to call it, pretty young with the switch triggering in starcraft, and various GUI based game makers (like rpg makers). I released the first hacked Frozen Throne compatible world editor (FyreDaug's TWTFE lol, how creative), before merging with Scio (UMSWE original) which is before WEU and all those goodies released within that year when pretty much everything got merged.
I've been silently working with the galaxy editor without a beta key since the editor was released, and have logged lots of hours of a mixed-style gameplay map, and so far im happy with the functionality enough that by the time the game is legitimately released, itll be in beta phase.
Basically im mid 20's mechanic, own a courier company and pay myself to run the company and maintain my own cars which I dont have to pay labor for, and rent those cars out to my employees. so now I have time to get back into the community, and I figured I might aswell atleast introduce myself. sc2 is so far everything I wished wc3 was at the time.

Good question. About one or two months ago I do recall getting an e-mail from Wc3campaigns that their entire site had been renewed and I was invited to take another look - which leads me to two possible conclusions. Either it was a desperate last attempt to keep the site running and it didn't work, or the site has been running fine (fine enough to get the mods to completely refresh its look) and this downtime is only temporary.
1. dont get caught by wc3 modders, i got my head ripped off a few times when i said the almost exact same thing (once on hive, once on inwarcraft, a german modding site)^^
2. i'd be really interested if you could tell me what exactly you can do in terms of hacking the editor... (i'm more of a modeler than a programmer, so just basics would be okay) i'm thinking of various ways of how i could achieve a specific placement behaviour and would like to know whether its very hard to accomplish or not!
(this is no request, if you would like to help me, i'd be glad, but i'm just wondering if i could poke you if i would start hacking the ge with questions i have :P)
(Basically I am working on a big list of models, wich placed together intelligently, build up a total house in the end, but I would like to enhance the placement so its easier for the end user to put the stuff together... I already thought about making a maxscript for that purpose, too, but in the editor it would be much more nice...)
the hacks were just mpq mods, changing text values to get a more wide range of options. if wc3c ever comes back online there was a list of things that the hack allowed.
I havent played with the data editor enough yet, I can use it, and make things work, but its just a change from the WE that is more so annoying than it is unlimited.
for building a tall wall or something, I would just do it with triggers. something like that was possible in the UI trigger editor in WE
when wc3c is back online i can link you to more pics, mostly comic style though!
it would be difficult to do this with triggers and it wouldnt be handy, because the terrainer wouldnt have a visual represantotion in the ge itself...
so i was thinking if i could maybe in any means could achieve some special "paint function" where one could lay down a floor plan or anything!
i dont have settled on any solution, probably making a maxscript and then exporting the buildings as one into ge will be more comfortable!
thx for the answer though!
this is just a little compilation of a few of those models, basically those are put together to make up a house like in the other screenie
trust me, the system works, i already implemented it into wc3 and it worked perfectly, so it will in sc2, too!
i have already concepted my ass off and have 7 pages of sketches already...
only thing is that i dont yet know how to give it away to the people!
not many used my models in actual maps, everyone said the idea was great, but i think people where just too lazy to make maps with it because its time consuming to search for the appropriate model in the list, place it, rotate it and then change the height...
so i'm trying to come up with some new placement system, just any possibility would be nice, that enables people to more intuitivly "draw" those models more easily...
and when you said you hacked the we i thought i might ask what u did precisely, maybe you got some valuable info for me...
but seems that my idea is way off somehow.
meh, thx for replying anyways!

@FyreDaug: Go
Hmm, another old-wc3campaigns git. The name doesn't ring a bell, though I remember UMSWE. Glad to see you around here :)
Welcome here :)
Btw, does anyone happen to know why wc3c.net is down and if it will ever resurrect (another domain name? :) )

I was wondering also. Although it was warcraft 3 related, there was lots of info on it that was helpful to modding in general.
Welcome, Fyre. Hope you enjoy the place, :P.
Glad to have an experienced modder around. Now get to work! Lol. j/k... kinda :P I am excited to see what you come up with.
uh! how hawt is this?

and props for umswe!
if each brick were to be a model in sc2, and you wanted to have that many, I can only imagine it using up tons of resources.
oh noez! you r thinking wrong XD
