I think that we should take all of the most popular maps from Starcraft brood war like sunken defense, or Helms deep(with import i can only imagine how epic a helms deep re-creation would be ;p) and then re make and super upgrade them. Post some of your ideas of Starcraft (or may be even warcraft III(even though i never played warcraft III)) maps that should be resurrected. I hope some map makers other than me take at least a look into this idea.
Just don't go overboard with upgrades. I'd say make them nearly identical gameplay wise but upgrade things like the UI.
I remember Marine Special Forces SE or something that was a really fun map. Sunken Defense was in my opinion the funnest defense map. I'm not sure if it's because the spine crawler itself can be a resource hog or if it's something else but when I did some 8 way Spine Crawler defense after just several rounds it got to be nearly unplayable because of lag / fps stutter.

I don't want to kill the mood of the thread but I want to voice my concern. Sc2's editor is much more advanced than sc1's was... That being said, I would hate to see people limit their scope of creativity to remaking sc1 maps. I'm not saying don't remake them but I also don't think it needs encouraging.
I am all for remakes as long as people move away from the old system with using beacons that you have to walk on top of to perform actions. We now have not only the possibility to make upgrade menus / shops, but also custom UI dialogs. If the original gameplay was good then by all means keep it the same, but please update the UI where it makes sense.
Also with the new game modes system you could create several game modes like "Classic" or "Revamped" so you could start by remaking the game exactly as it used to be then create your own custom version with "improvements".
I already tried to remake the "Madness" map from StarCraft, like Family Guy Madness. However it doesn't have a Win/Lose condition fully functional yet, and some bugs here and there. Still working on it though.

For example like in specal forces you no longer need 80 buildings on the map so the player can create what he/ she wants. you can make a building look like anything and have it be able to create units, tech, upgrade, or even have specal abilities. Heck in Starcraft 2 you don't even need buildings to do that if you make the right triggers.
But i do see what he is saying and i appreciate his concern.
Just an example though. Would be great to create as much unique locations as possible and yet some areas from the old one like the casino.
To have one civilian as you with a weapon load out, along with the ability to combine stuff you stole from your van in the parking lot (or something). You could break up the 4 types of damage (mech,bio,psi,struc) to make something feel more solid or more destructive to fire from your hand made Molotov from a wine bottle, napkins, and a lighter you shoplifted.
Sound fun? The game could have many combos from all the store products as usual, along with some secret toys you have to find.
Grocery store wars didn't mess with the resource count in any way. No upgrades, no currency. Just smash, grab, combine stuff, get into lots of trouble.

Tarpit Defense (4.9 or something?)
Was one of my favorite maps. After I finish my Line Tower Defense, and noone has started it yet, there is a 50% chance I'll do it next.
I'm also interested in porting Tree Tag, and some Vampirisms.
Does anyone remember a game called Custom Hero defense for WC3? that was one of my favorite games.
