Hello, I am a new poster here. A friend of mine ButtAirFly lead me here, because I had two map idea's I would love to see, but sadly, I am not a mapmaker. I could never get the hang of the creators. So I am asking for help to see if anyone would be interested in taking the hard work, and using my idea, or to tell me such a thing is impossible, and I should give it up.
1) Rise of True Rome was a map I had played back in SC1 days, and I loved the hell out of it. It wasn't overly complex, but still had a good deal of stratagy, and diplomacy. I would like a remake or revision of this map. I enjoyed the idea that crossing bodies of water was at set places using beacons, and their were no air units in the game. It was split into three ages (Bronze, Iron, Golden), and each race was it's own age (Zerg for Bronze, Terran for Iron, Protoss for Golden). Also, each faction had a unique unit, that added a bit to the game. For example, the German uniqe was a hero zergling instead of the regular zergling (thus, it had the attack faster and move faster upgrades, since it was SC1). While it did one less damage then a regular zergling, I had seen people use the stratagy of just upgrading the melee attack for zerg and build nothing else, and swept the map pretty hard. Or the Jews, that had the Messiah as their unit, which was an Archon.... and well, it was the strongest unit in the game. Theirs was the last unit one could build, and if they surivved that long, they could make an army of them, and wreak some stuff.... Carthage had unique ultralisks, Vikings marines... Rome had Zelots, Troy had Dragoons.. ect down the list. I had found the map online in another board somewhere, for download, if you wanted to take a look I could look it up again. But this was my more 'simple' request.
2) This one is gonna be a bit more complicated. Ever since WoL, I had talked about this, and now that all three factions had their 'story mode' it seems like it is now possible. However, I know balance would be the biggest issue, because the camp isn't really balanced for MP play, but here it goes.
I want a large melee type map, however instead of just starting as soon as the game loads, you get a menu (dependent on race), to select your racial benefits. With Terrans, they get x money to select the upgrades they would like (from the list of WoL Camp armory ones). With Zerg, you would get to chose each units divergent variation, and it's one mutation from the list of 3. For Protoss, you get to select your units out of the three options per type. Depending how this goes, one could add in things like, Terran Research, Spear Abilities, and Kerrigan and her abilities, but I think those would seriously start unbalancing the game. I don't think the Armory upgrades, and unit selections will all that much. But they might.
Anyhow, these were the maps I had in mind. I also have an idea for a Civilization Map, as I find Sapphire a terrible Civ map, but these two are the ones I really want to see. If anyone is interested, I would love to talk with you. Thank you for reading, and good game out there!
Those are certainly both do-able. Balancing would be a challenge for both. Sadly, I do not have time right now to work with this. One thing I'd like to mention, I've never tried this, but you can open campaign maps. You might be able to find an armory campaign map that already has an upgrade interface made. You'd just have to change the cost to be minerals and not upgrade points. Or just keep it at upgrade points and give players some of that at the start.
Well, I am glad to know that my idea's aren't beyond the realm of possibility. I know how life get's busy, so I understand. When I say I have no technical skill, I am not kidding however.
That being said, one is just a port, but since I don't think their is a way to turn a SC1 map into a SC2 map, it would have to be redone from scratch, correct?
yes that is correct. You can't really use a sc1 map in sc2. However, if you happen to have code from it. You can use it to help you with basic triggers and balancing
Hey IrishDrinker. I remember that map and many other SC1 maps. That and the other diplomacy maps out there. If you're interested, I can assist with showing how to make it. I'm dedicated to working on my own map right now. And if you're interested in other SC1 maps let me know. Most of them are doable.
Hey! I that map is awesome, i used to play it a lot when it came out. I think you're just missing the old simple unbalanced SC1 maps :P. But yeah, you, your friend and me can work out remaking them on SC2.
I suppose if you can tell me how, I can give it another try. I hadn't even opened up the mapeditor for SC2, since I could only make basic melee type maps (no triggers or anything) in the SC1 editor, and the same kinda things in WC3. Anything more complicated then that confused me. Even with the old stratagy guides that helped a bit. How would one go about training another?
As for Sapphire, I do not think it is a terrible map, persay. It is a decent level-up and roll over people type of map. To me, though.. it isn't a CIV map. TO me, the old civ map I remember the most, was the one that had a bunch of wonders up at the top of the map, with little beacons that one could buy. It had unique units based on the civ you were, and this is just me, but had a map looking like earth. I belive if I remember right, it also allowed one to hire mercs (zerglings, and hydra's i think?) from your capitol, as a small base defense.
But, regardless, that was what a civ map to me was.... actual civs, and wonders... and while their was still the whole 'mass a unit and attack in a direction' maybe it's faulty memory, but I remember it being harder then that...

I think when you came across Civilization Sapphire, you were hoping to play a remake of a SC1 but were like "omg whats going on lol".
I know the map you're talking about, I was actually part of the clan that made that map. It was a fun map to play back in the day :). Same goes for Rise of rome and the other diplomacy maps.
To everyone else: so what IrishDrink is talking about is a simplified version of Risk SC2 map. Players would start in a single outpost and try to expand as fast as they can, controlling certain outposts would give access to unique units. In the Civilization SC1 map, players would invest their money in a linear tech tree which would provide bonuses. These bonuses were simple like more money, or spawning better units.
Well, I will give those a try. Taking a quick look, they seem like a step by step guide (at least the top one). Maybe I will attempt to make my Melee map that uses the camp elements I mentioned. I will also use your thread, as I have started to look at that while I was awaiting any responses on this thread. Thank you Queen, for your help. Not sure I will have the skill to do what I would like, but will give it an honest effort when i get the time.
