Something I just heard was that Congress is considering passing Bill S.978. What this bill aims to do is make it illegal to stream, post videos, etc. of copyrighted material on the internet. Congress this that this is good because it should stop people from putting movies, shows, songs, and music videos on the internet without the owner's permission. That would theoretically help the owner's of the copyrighted material to make more money off of commercials and that stuff. However, this bill would also make it a felony to stream or post videos of video games on the internet which is just downright retarded. In my opinion, this bill should either never be passed in its current state OR be reworded to allow for video game footage to be on the internet. I'd like to hear what you guys think about this and how it would affect the internet and gaming community.
P.S. I'm not sure how this could even be passed as it would be assuming that the U.S. government has control over the entire internet...
The US government pretty much DOES have control over the entire Internet. They can implement the same restrictions that other countries do, require IPS's to track and log everything, take over domains, etc. And most sites (like Demonoid) have a long series of backups, but they also often post a list of said backup domains online. I can find them, so I'm sure that the USG can find them. It wouldn't necessarily be that hard to enforce, but they would also end up with half the country in jail assuming the felony thing is still there. A lot of people probably won't get re-elected if it does pass, either.
I don't know what exactly is written is this bill, but a few weeks ago there was a good example situation that get headlines for a few days in germany.
Our criminal agency (it's a part of the police now) found the servers from the streaming site "kino.to" (it was a german site for cinema films and tv series) in Spain and could arrested 13 people and one was one the flight. I don't know what happend to him.
But the whole thing with the copyright get washed away through the internet. There will always be "illegal transfers" anywhere and anytime. Nobody can control it, or they recreate it anew, but thiat would be retarded.
But when I read copyright this and copyright that, I really ask myself: why? Most people are living by sellings their art (like authors or artists), but the most income for music artist are coming through live concerts and merchandise rights. Actually they get only a small percentage from the original price we pay for a CD or DVD. On the other hand not every artist can go on a tour.
I think art should be free for everyone so more people can enjoy it, but it may be an utopian vision.^^
Totally agree. I understand why streaming movies is bad. The entire point of the movie is to watch it; therefore, being able to watch the movie for free will prevent you from ever needing to buy the movie. Watching a game stream will not deter you from purchasing the real game. No more husky sc :( Starcraft is an E-sport. People want to stream these games. Blizzard wants us to stream games. I agree that the bill needs to be re-worded. I'm not totally sure if it does apply to games though. I skimmed it real quick, not sure if it applies to games.

this whole thing makes me giggle, anyone who thinks its going to pass its in current contexts dosnt know much about the world we live in. Google and many other companies with massive legal departments are already peaking up about this, they know it will hurt them.
For people who dont know what this is about.. this is an interesting video someone else posted about it

That wouldn't affect ISP restrictions, and wouldn't do much anyway. Even going through proxies can be cut off through seizing domains, redirection, and mandatory ISP filters. Besides, if they stream US content it's not totally out of the question to have local authorities have people sent to the US for prosecution.
That would be making it illegal to VIEW said material. If someone from another country hosts the material and an american views it, the american has done nothing wrong (according to the proposed law). ISPs who allow copyrighted material to be access by their customers would also not be breaking the law, unless a specific clause mentions them. Only if an american uploads or streams copyrighted material would there be a breaking of the law.
You can't (or shouldn't be able to) prosecute people living in another country. Maybe if they commited an act of war, but otherwise it depends on the local law. If youtube was hosted in new zealand instead of america, all the USA could do is put pressure on NZ to pass laws which would then make google criminals; google would then move youtube elsewhere.
I can't see this as something the US government can win. Not nowadays.
I'm just going on about what if it DOES pass. I know it sounds silly the way it is, but what will the world be like if something like this actually were to happen? shudders
Majority of youtube would be shut down as most users would have to delete their accounts. A lot of sites would just go down. No more sc2streamster or Husky or day[9]...
Oh wait, blizzard has given everyone the right to use their game and stream it so we're good.
Most game companies would probably allow videos to be streamed online. If people stopped doing so they would have a massive drop in sales because no one would know what it was. I mean, most of the games I know of are because people repost the videos all over the place, I rarely see the actual ads put up by the publishers.

Everyone would just move their servers to japan and korea and new zealand and other countries without those restrictions.

That could probably cause some complications...
Like what? People in the US would get slightly slower youtube videos than normal, that's all.

It's probably not too easy for everything like YouTube to just move to another country...

This doesn't affect starcraft 2 casters though as blizzard has given the right to make youtube videos or stream their content for free.

I certainly don't think it will pass in its current state, but it is possible.

Yeah. but starcraft 2 isn't the only game in the universe. :( Hopefully this all gets resolved, but there's not much we can do anyways.

You keep saying that. Although I agree that they probably will do that if the bill passes, I wasn't aware that they already did it. Source?
Ooooohhhh Caaanaaddaaaaa...
Sorry I couldn't hear you guys, what's going on down there?
