I wonder who is less objective, people who DO play WoW, or people who don't.
personally I would say get the game, see if you like it (come to my realm Auchindoun lol) and we could do some dungeons together. Ignore the haters, since its probably the most hated game in the world, and get your own opinion, which so many people don't have.
then the haters (most of who never played it themself) would say don't get it. it will consume all your time and kill your friends and you will go to hell etc etc
obviously I can't be constructive either, since it is my opinion (as a wow player) that the people who dont play WoW just because of its bad reputation, are morons. also the 15 dollars per month sound worse than it is. For example, I have an xbox 360. xbox games cost about 65 euro's (wow subscription being 11 euro's p/month) each, and will get pretty boring if you play it for 4 months. then you buy a new game, and play that one for 4 months. while 4 months of wow subscription is only 44 euros. seems cheaper to me.
anyway thats just my opinion, I'd suggest try it out, you can come to my realm if you like and I can help you through some things and answer your questions if you like. Ive seen many people who quit the game just because they couldn't get into raids or whatever and its always nicer to have an experienced 'friend to help you', though personally I think its most fun if your 'real life' friends play the game aswell.
conclusion is that I suggest you do whatever you want to do and don't ask others, since their opinions are rarely objective about this subject
and now: Which posts are constructive and which aren't?! (the list below isn't)
2 - \m/ diablo

12 - waaait a minute... those are US servers o.O I forgot. do what he said.
13 - rift = aion? 'So maniest WoW killer'
14 - meh

16 - lol true that
17 - notsureifserious.jpg
18 - yeah friends are good m'kay
19 - YESSSSS Someone that is constructive! though inbalance in PvP may kinda drive u crazy
Rift has gotten off to a way better start than WoW ever did. It won't be a ''wow killer'' though. Only thing that can kill WoW atm is WoW itself. But Rift is a great game nonetheless.
i agree the raids/dungeons get real old real fast, there is a lot of elitism if you random dungeon (someone tried to vote kick me for doing "crap dps" even though i was the healer) and if you want to get into raiding but can't for whatever reason there is litterally nothing else to do
Well, I've played WoW since the very beginning until 2009-2010 (can't remember). It was fun. But way to addictive.
The following thoughts are from the year I finished the playing the game. It might have changed so don't judge me.
If you want to raid - wow constricts your time. You have to spend time in game and you are not really free when it comes to IRL. That is the biggest problem. Of course you can go casual but it would be just hanging around towns with guild buddies and going to some heroics from time to time. And maybe a low tier raid or two.
If you want to go PvP however, and have a good arena partner, you can play more freely and use your free time as you want.
I would also like to mention that a good buddy is almost a requirement not only for PvP but for everything else too.
Now I play EVE Online. It is a much more mature MMO. It has a quite realistic market which I like to study from time to time with various excel sheets. Calculate production efficiencies, costs, etc. It is kind of related to my university program.
PvP is also quite fun, and especially fleet battles where you fight 500v500 or even more, corporation wars for space and planets, and so on.
The downside is that it is really really hard to get into the game. Learning curve is very steep, there is no level limit like in other MMOs, so it almost impossible to catch up, and understanding everything in the game takes years.
The really good thing that I like about EVE is that you are not required to be online a lot. You can play when you want and skills are going up even when you're offline. Money can also be set up to increase when you are attending university "activities" and trying to crawl back home.
I saw some statistics somewhere that said WoW sold 250,000 pre-orders and Rift sold 350,000. And that Rift is selling more per day than WoW did this close to launch.
Edit: Could have been the US launch. ''North America (First Day) - 240,000''. EU launch was a few months later, so not sure whether to count that or not as ''Launch day sales''.

I would definitely recommend playing WoW. Every map creator should; it's really something to marvel what they have done... It's really not that hard to stop too! I played for two and a half years and then just stopped in mid 2007. Haven't touched it since. You know when you're done with it lol.
Depends, Depends. Every person in this thread whether for or against playing WoW, has made good and fair points.
I just recently quit. About 2 months ago. Myself, personally, it just kinda lacks depth, skill and replayability. MmoRpg`s by nature are grinds and time-sinks that determine your perceived "skill" in the game. So..yea..
The game is fun though and can be addicting, but the latter usually being for all the wrong reasons. Especially since it involves a monthly fee.
I had played the game for a total of about 9 months. On and off. I can truly say now that it was a waste of valuable time and money. I did however come in contact with some cool people and they`ve become very much close friends.
But yea, So I would have to vote no, and agree with progammer. Wait for Diablo 3.
Don't bother, especially if you just have the OG WoW. Sure, the first one was the best, but good luck ever getting a group of people to not advance beyond level 60, and just stay and attempt the 40 mans. Won't happen. Besides, WoW is really just a time dump. I quit the year I came to college; best choice of my life.
You're better off buying several long islands with the 15 bones.
If you don't have friends playing with you it's not as fun. I get bored of MMOs very quickly by myself not because it's boring but because it's repetitive and having conversations with friends is half the fun, the other being able to pvp. I love hearing some conversations guild mates have with people. Only reason I was able to play PSOBB for a while. After I got kicked out of my guild(it wasn't my fault) I started getting bored because the conversations were boring.
It's gone down hill. It's way too streamlined. It plays like a spreadsheet. They took all the randomness and uncertainty out of PvP because people complained too much.
They also made every class virtually identical in raids / pvp because people complained about having to find specific players with specific specs to fulfill roles.
It's not really video game any more. It's just a bunch of data with visuals.
Its only redeeming feature is the quality of raid encounters. But it feels now like they could just delete the rest of the game and it wouldn't make any sort of difference.
as ex-WoWfanboy, I would suggest you don't. Most people I know just play the game because of the social part, and would quit if there friends do.

Wait, what?
If you want to play a good MMO, might I suggest to try Rift? It's far more interesting. Or wait for SWTOR/GW2/TERA ;)
I still have a WoW Account but there simply isn't anything interesting to do in endgame, so I'll probably quit again.

DC Universe Online is quite good. Flying power + fire based skills = Awesome.
