...at Starcraft Universe (SCU) on the Battle.net forums.
The thing grinding his gears is that Upheaval Arts (a group of Starcraft 2 modders) made a kickstarter to get about $80,000 from donations from supporters so they can focus on developing their mod, with his issue being that its "free" to make any mod.
I'm posting around here partially to ask: What is the cost of modding for Starcraft 2, if there is any form of cost?
I'll also admit I'm mostly asking people around here to tell him that the general populace, including Blizzard, doesn't consider SCU to be a "scam."
@Setho961: Go There are other threads about that around here. Mapter's general opinion is different from the average player I think.
There are costs if you do like they plan for SCU, working full time on the mod, pay professionals to make things for the mod, such as soundtrack. Modding can be free, if you do it as a hobby during your free time, but it won't be free if you invest money in it, as well as time you would use to wor and get paid for.
@Setho961: Go I can't take that guy seriously. In my opinion he is simply trolling, or biased somehow, maybe because he envies the possibility of making money with maps.
Ask him to make a map just like SCU in his free time, without spending a single penny in it, with all the custom models, sounds, or anything else that doesn't come right from SC2 files. If he does make that map, I'll agree with him 100%.
Yea, I've been watching that thread. My suggestion would be for you to go out and breath some fresh air, stare at a wonder that is nature, observe children playing, elderly reminiscing, life simply taking its course and forget all about that thread because for some reason you just won't accept that you're being trolled by a very obvious troll.

Modding costs time and time is priceless. Speaking of which, he's enjoying himself and you're getting upset, is this really how you ought to spend your most valuable possession?
Be sure to check out the extension mod: Hots Custom Map support on NA and EU, Despite the name it greatly expands the roster of options for the default 3 races and is updated all the way to NCO.
@FenixKissKerrigan: Go Yes, when you don't even care about supporting your arguments, don't care about the arguments contrary to you, and keep repeating the same phrases and words non-stop as if it could make them acquire any sense.
@Mille25: Go Ya, I refuse to post in that thread anymore and will just downvote and report anything like what he's posting if I see it anywhere else, and obviously delete it if it tries to sneak into the Upheaval website.

Don't worry, I get plenty of fresh air walking between classes on my college's campus (learning to program btw). Even between college stuffs, there's always time to spend on random things like posting in forums. Though, I don't mean to say that posting constructively in forums is bad or that I'm not taking my classes seriously, I already did an SQL related assignment that I spent at least 10 hours across 3-6 days on to get 24.5 out of 25 queries working (the .5 I didn't quite figure out but got close).

Ya, there were actually two people like that in there (one of them being the guy I already pointed out) :P.
I have work that barely involves computer. So sc2 editing for me is fun, yet i can't afford myself to spend more than 2-4 hours per day on it (and not every day though). So with that approach map development of even much simplier rpg that sc2 universe will lasts like forever. I personaly don't know how programmers that having main work can develop something like this without having serious health breaks, cuz it will mean that they are sitting at the computers like 24/7 (not to mention personal life issues). So for big-scale ambitious project for sc2 it's definitely have a sense to kickstart it.

Anyway, his side of the conversation mainly starts around here on the Battle.net forums, post #51: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/9572528443?page=3#51
And here's the webpage of the (now funded) kickstarter for Starcraft Universe in case you're interested in knowing more about SCU: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/747939120/starcraft-universe
Update: Looks like he's done on that thread now.

I guess the word "donation" never has enter that guys vocabulary.
Ya, mostly made a brand new thread because I was in a rush to post, had to leave the keyboard quickly.
Although, I never heard of a guy calling a Starcraft 2 mod a scam before.

Dont feed the troll.
Wow that's sad, he has no clue how hard it is to make a map, does he even understand what it is

Damn i been scammed!!!
Anyways I'm probably stirring that ol' pot again but playing devils advocate i can see his point.
Most forums are free
and using the editor to publish is free (maybe $100 for the game).
then the question is, why does SCU want/need 80k? it is a lot of money with no overhead that is technically going into pockets of a mapster or 2.
i cant blame the guy for being upset.
Does troll mean someone you don't agree with these days?

Everything has a cost, even your posting here (as well as mine), cuz it takes time that you can spend on more important things..
