So we've all been scared some time in our life. (Maybe). Maybe something creepy happened in real life, or you played a scary game, watched a scary movie. But WHAT about it made you scared? What about something scary makes you scared? Because you don't know what it is? Because it looks like it can munch your face off? Is it psychological fear? Fear of the unknown? What the hell am I talking about?
So I started mapping again, and I started it with some scary shit. And now that some basic mechanics are done (I actually did this a while back during WoL, and now I just finished them) I'm trying to think of how to scare them peeps. Yeah I already put some jump scares, but I need more. Something that'll make people scared when they AREN'T playing the game.
I'm sure you've heard of anmesia if you're into horror (if not, its on sale right now, buy it). That game pretty much nailed that type of horror. It benefits greatly from a heavy use of ambient sounds. If you've played Amnesia, you'll know that there's only 4 or so areas where there are lots of monsters that can actually kill you, and you don't even encounter a real monster until a pretty good ways into the game. Even though you didn't encounter that initial monster for a while, you heard it breathing and walking around, you could see corpses it had eaten and marks it had left, and you could catch glimpses of it every now and then. That's what Amnesia did perfectly- humans fear the unknown, and it constantly left doubt in your head. (Where the heck is that monster now? I keep hearing noises, what's making those? What's around that other room- it could be something that wants to eat me, but I need to find that item. etc.... ) In other words, they maintained a constant level of tension throughout the entire game (while not being too overt), so when the actual "Really Scary" bits came, you were terrified.

Yeah Amnesia is one of the best games for horror. You need to constantly make the player fear for their life, keep them second guessing their actions and wondering what is out there to get them. Need to bring variety and have a ton of ways to fail. I think there is a lot of potential for this category but it's difficult to make a good horror game. Also the atmosphere in which a player is playing in can heavily affect how fearful they get. Need to grab and hold their attention. Get them to concentrate hard somehow. Perhaps puzzles and minigames throughout to force them to focus and get absorbed into the game.

What the?
For a horror game , most important elements are ambience and psychological fear(Fear of the unknown falls under this)

Ah, by that I meant, they'll remember whats scary about the game outside of the game. And they'll still be scared :3
And thanks for that. Now searching for creepy music and sounds. LOL.
And maybe think up some.... brain trauma o-o

I agree amnesia is probably the best horror game.
Ergh. But think of how much the fear factor would go down if there's three players. God dangit D:. I guess I can force them to separate or something.

Cry of Fear would like to disagree with you.
