So after the release of LoTV and seeing the end of the godawful Starcraft 2 trilogy. I've been putting together a custom campaign that would act as a reboot of sorts but done more in the style of the original games and with a better written story. I think I've got everything set and am hoping to get it done before the year ends, but I wanted to post my story out there and get some feedback.
-DISCLAIMER-
My campaign was written ignoring all canon except for what's in Starcraft 1, Brood War and their manuals. The N64 missions, books, comics, etc are not considered canon. Some Starcraft 2 characters appear in my campaign but with different backstories. You've been warned.
Roster of Heros: Zerg: Abathur: Following the Brood war, the Cerebrate provided genetics assistance for Kerrigan's plan to rebuild the Swarm, including the creation of Broodmothers and undergoing forced evolution to become combat capable. (https://starcraft.fandom.com/wiki/Blightbringer)
Zagara: Created on Char by Kerrigan, and the first broodmother to be created. She came to see the Abathur as a rival for Zerg leadership. She was originally a queen, but was mutated into a Broodmother following the Brood War.
Protoss: Selendis: After the deaths of Aldaris and Raszagal, the Executor quickly gained support from many within both the Khalai and Nerazim tribes for her past military victories and her defiance of the Conclave. As High Executor, Selendis announced an end to old prejudices and formed the Daelaam Empire, attempting to unify the Protoss towards a common goal, the reclamation on Aiur.
Talis: Having joined the Templar caste shortly before the Zerg Invasion of Aiur, Talis had trained under Preator Fenix and followed him when he sided with Tassadar and Selendis during the Protoss Civil War, she continued to serve under Fenix up until his death on Korhal. Though already considered a skilled warrior, Talis eagerly awaits further training under a new teacher.
Mohandar: An experienced military leader, Mohandar was chosen by the elders of the Nerazim tribes to become their new Prelate, following rumors that Zeratul had been killed. As Prelate he opposed the formation of the Daelaam but now advises Selendis on all matters related Nerazim culture.
Terran: Nova:
Tychus: Raised as an orphan on the streets of the great Confederate megalopolis of Tarsonis City. Tychus escaped a life of petty crime and underworld gangs by enlisting with the Confederate military and was eventually posted as a Magistrate on Mar Sara. After a failed attempt by Raynor to assassinate Arcturus, Tychus became leader of the Raiders and continues their struggle against the Dominion.
Jorgensen: As the Guild Wars closed and the murder of Angus Mengsk became known, Jorgensen, at the time a councilor, announced the formation of an organization which would protect Umoja from Confederate aggression – the Umojan Protectorate. As it's Minister of the Protectorate, Jorgensen is seen as a grandfatherly gentleman and a servant of the public good. Rumors have spread that he has been manipulated by Arcturus Mengks into developing weapons for the Dominion.
Horner: Serving as Captain of the DSS Aleksander under Admiral Dugalle. Horner gained command of the Directorate's Expeditionary Forces following Dugalles suicide. Though a skilled tactician, Horner was unable to save the UED fleet from the Zergs onslaught, escaping only with the Aleksander and her crew. Instead of retreating to Earth, Horner seeks revenge against those responsible for the failure of the Directorates mission in the Korpulu sector.
Setup: One year has passed since the final battle over Char that ended the Brood War. Though Kerrigan had won, the Swarm was left devastated and Kerrigan has spent the time rebuilding, preparing for future conflicts. Just as a new Broodmother is morphed in Kerrigan's infested platform, the Dominion launch a surprise attack on Char.
Mission 01: The Broodmother is sent by Abathur(The Cerebrate) to help repel the Dominion forces lead by commander Nova. The Broodmother meets Kilysa a senior Broodmother.
Mission 02: The Broodmother meets Kerrigan. Abathur informs that during the Dominions retreat an Umojan strike force has land on Char. Abathur sent another broodmother to handle them but she's turned feral, with no obvious clue as to how. Kilysa and the Broodmother are sent to deal with her.
Mission 03: Kerrigan wants to attack Korhal but figures the attack was meant to bait her into a trap. Kerrigan sends the Broodmother to the station that the Confederates conducted their Zerg experiments with her that has been refurbished by the Dominion to find info.
Mission 04: Kerrigan sends the Broodmother to destroy, what she believes is a hidden Dominion base only to run into a small colony lead by former ally Tychus Findlay(The Magistrate)
Mission 05: The Swarms movements catch the attention from Protoss outpost on the dark moon of Kaldir. The Broodmother and Abathur are sent to destroy it.
Mission 06: After combing through the databanks from the Dominion facility(Mission 03) Kerrigan and the Broodmother go to Tarsonis were a feral Zerg brood are under the control of Umojan scientists working with the Dominion.
Mission 07: The invasion of Korhal part 1, beginning with Korhals primary orbital platform.
Mission 08: The Invasion of Korhal part 2, Zerg forces landing on the outskirts of Augustgrad.
Mission 09: The Invasion of Korhal part 3, Kerrigan and the Broodmother make the final push to Mengsks palace. During the battle Mengsk activates the Psi-Destroyer only for it to self-destruct. Mengsk dies, Nova promises to avenge her father.
Mission 10: Discovering that Nova is on route to Umoja, Kerrigan follows her to a orbital station. Kerrigan fights the confronts the Umojan leader Jorgensen and Nova knock out and capture Kerrigan. Jorgensen attempts to assassinate Nova, Jorgensen reveals that the Umojans sabotaged the Psi-Destroyer and would prefer if the Dominion died with her. Nova escapes.
Set-up: The Swarm fractures with Kerrigans disappearance. The Protoss, lead by Selendis(The Executor), wants to aid the Terrans and defeat the Zerg. The player is a Preator, serving under Artanis, who is the Admiral of the Protoss's Grand Armada. Talis, is placed under Preator to train and serve under. The new Protoss flagship, The Shield of Aiur(The only Mothership in-canon), is introduced
Mission 01: The Preator is sent to destroy a Zerg brood that has begun to infest a world on the boarder of Protoss space. Mohandar is introduced as the new Dark Prelate due to Zeratuls disappearance.
Mission 02: After receiving a distress signal from Hanson. The Preator arrives to help on Tyrador to find a group of rouge dark templar extremists, calling themselves the Taldarim, searching for Nova.
Mission 03: Hanson leads the Protoss heros to Nova on Antiga Prime. Nova has been trying to build her forces in secret. During their meeting, Jorgensen's Umojan forces and a Hybrid launch a surprise attack. It's revealed that the Tal'darim were looking for Nova on Jorgensen's orders but since they failed he's handling it himself. The Dominion forces are wiped as Hanson escapes with Nova thanks to the Protoss, who defeat the Hybrid which Artanis knows about.
Mission 04: Artanis explains that Zeratul had informed Selendis about the events of Dark Origin and left to investigate further before receiving a distress message from Shakuras, it's under attack from Zerg forces lead by Hybrid. Artanis and the Preator hold back the Zerg to allow an evacuation. Talis secures the crystals for the Xel'naga temple.
Mission 05: The Protoss defend the Xel'naga temple from the Zerg while it's being reactivated. Before it can be fired it's destroyed by Tal'darim forces and their leader Mohandar, Zeratul interferes before Mohandar can kill Talis. Mohandar and his forces withdraw.
Mission 06: Zeratul leads the Protoss heros to Braken which houses the Tal'darim base. Zeratul explains that had been keeping in reguar contact with Mohandar and believed he had been updating Selendis, only recently discovering that Mohandar was working with the leader of the Hybrid conspiracy. The only clue he has to go by is a name, Amon. On Braken, the Preator confronts Mohandars forces as he escapes.
Mission 07: The Protoss tack Mohandar to the Sigma Quadrant and discover the ruins of a Xel'naga Worldhip occupied by Tosh and his Umojan forces. Jorgensen is captured by Zeratul.
Mission 08: During an interrogation Jorgensen reveals that he's working for Amon, the last living Xel'naga, though claims that he doesn't know what his ultimate plan is. Jorgensen offers to lead the Protoss to a hybrid facility where Amon and Zeratul are, in exchange for his life. This is a hero mission with Talis and Zeratul going through the facility while the Protoss fight the stations defenses. Jorgensen escapes during the fighting, from within his cell, by Umojan ghosts, revealing himself as Duran. Amon isn't found but before they leave Talis access a terminal revealing the location of the main Hybrid facility on Aiur.
Mission 09-10: The Protoss gather their forces to reach Aiur. (1)Their initial attack destroys Hybrid Facilities located around the corpse of the Overmind. (2)Amon contacts the Protoss, revealing his plans and offering them a chance to join him. They refuse and Zerg are sent on mass to destroy them. A plan is made to hold the Citadel of the Executor, lure as many Zerg as possible then purify Aiur, using the Shield of Aiur, from orbit. Artanis dies in the process.
Setup: with a large portion of zerg forces destroyed a Auir. Nova season opportunity to end the war. She has sent a general to new Folsom to pick up a large number of prisoners who has been pardoned in exchange for service to the Dominion. Including Raynor.
01: Raynor defends the prison until all personnel are able to evacuate.
02: Nova sends Raynor to secure a scrapyard to acquire resources. Raynor reunites with Tychus.
03: Nova explains her plan to end the war by capturing the Umojan leader Minister Jorgensen. She Launches a surprise attack on Umoja beginning with its main orbital platform.
04: Nova leads a raid to capture Minster Jorgensen only to find a hologram.
05: Jorgensen unleashes hybrid lead Zerg forces on Nova. Raynor and Tychus rescue her.
06: Raynor convinces Nova to keep fighting before leaving to answer a distress signal, which turns out to be a trap by Horner. During the battle, Zerg arrive and attack both sides, Raynor has a chance to escape and let Horner die but instead decides he saves him.
07: Tychus goes to investigate a large number of enemy forces converging on a Barren planet. Tychus runs into Zeratul who is there for the same reason they team up to stop the enemy from breaching a Xelnaga Temple.
08: The Protoss and Terran heroes united The Protoss believe Amon is on Char harvesting the Cerebrate Overmind to make Hybrid. They launch an attack on Kerrigan's infested platform as a distraction to deploy a Psi-Disrutor on Char. (When Stukov moved the disruptor to Braxis he hide it's schematics on the Aleksander)
09: The heroes must defend the disruptor as it begins to charge.
10: With the disruptor operational the Generals forces push toward Amons fortress. Amon, Jorgensen and Mohandar are defeated. Raynor finds Kerrigan imprisoned in Amon's fortress and confronts her.
Thank you. I tried getting feedback on the SC2 forums and man talk about toxic. The biggest complaint I had gotten was about rewritting Nova as Mengsk's Daughter instead of using Valerian.
I don't have any comment for this idea, sorry. I think the story problems go back all the way to SC1 and that it makes more sense to reboot the lore with the benefit of hindsight.
I have plenty of ideas I'd be happy to discuss but this forum seems to be pretty anemic.
No, I'm still working on the campaigns. My problem is that I'm working on them backward, the Terran campaign first, so even when I get that finished I still have to work on the other two before uploading them.
Also, I'm reworking the premise of the Terran campaign from what I've put up in the outline. Instead of the Dominion as the main focus, it's the Raiders. The only thing I feel certain of is that the player is a nameless Lieutenant(Nova), but other things like, whether I'll have Valerian as a character, whether Warfield or Tychus is the Magistrate, if Raynor starts the campaign in jail or not, etc. Everything is up in the air and hasn't clicked yet.
I always felt that the obsession with Kerry and Raynor has hamstrung the IP's creative potential for the last twenty years. After Heart of the Swarm came out to immense disappointment, the fanfiction and custom campaign scenes seemingly collapsed.
That's what inspired me to write an AU for the story. Long story short, I decided to simply ignore Raynor, Kerry, etc and just go from there. There are tons of really interesting things in the lore that could serve as plot hooks. My published doc on google has barely scratched the surface.

I hear ya. I have plans for a series on epilogue campaigns, one of which involves a Kerrigan clone alla Aliens: Resurrection.
