Hello everyone. None of you will actually know me so this may look pretty weird for most of you.
Back in the days I started creating maps for 'Medal of Honor : Allied Assault ', that being a FPS. I also worked on project for CoD2.
After a while I picked up Age of Mythology. All these games I got pretty far and found some wonderful people and thereby worked on the most amazing projects.
After a break due the games getting old I picked up Warcraft 3, but the scene was so over populated and everything was already done if you know what I mean.
Now, I've been playing Starcraft 2 for a while and booted the Editor occasionally too mess about you could say. If I may say the RTS editor is easier to step in too, but still has the needed complexity towards more high-end based custom (game mode/Mod) maps.
Also, seen some rumours about Blizzard planning or at-least looking into the option of 'selling' custom maps made by the community. Not that I would only want to get back for the money, but would be awesome to do it for a living right ?
TL;DR So tell me guys, is it worth it to get back into making custom maps ? If so, I'm looking too make friends !
I hope this thread doesn't get over arrogant like I'm the best out there or so, but we could state I got some experience behind me with editors...
Thanks for reading, no need too troll <3
Yeah, Blizzard is still planning on releasing the Map Marketplace Soon(TM).
As far as mapping goes, it's all up to you! If you enjoy mapping, then make maps, hehe. A lot of people aren't happy with the current Custom Games System, but it will change in time.
Yeah exactly. I would love to get some stuff going on but from what I have seen there's just the 'popular' top 10 maps and they been the same since release kinda :/ So it's gotta be very very hard to get your work up there.
It's not like you lose by making a map. But it doesn't feel motivating if you know no-one would ever see or even play your map right ?
Please tell me my idea is wrong.
not all maps are in he top 10 forever. only 2 or 3 of them are from the beta. some oher map like mafia made it up the list in one week and are now falling again. it's a come and go on the top list
It's more like 4 or 5, but what Bone said. Maps that are currently very popular (1st or 2nd page) and have been since launch would be Nexus Wars, Income Wars, SOTIS, Battlecraft and Marine Arena. Depending on how you count, you can add in THE Card Game, but for as far as I've seen that has been on the 1st/2nd page on and off more than constantly - there have been weeks where it was nowhere to be seen.
I'd be interested in the market place. But I think blizz needs to approve your map before you can sell it. Its an okay idea but I really, really hope blizzard puts in some sort of quality control. I mean, I'd hate for them to be super picky with what can be sold and what can't. But you know people. Everyone will try to make an average, crappy, map and charge 99 cents for it unless blizzard has to approve them first.

Feel free to Send me a PM if you have any questions/concerns!
I don't think the control is the issue, the issue would be people copying your top selling maps for free I guess.
But yeah, I've got something in the back of my head that isnt on SC2 yet currently so I'll give it a shot :)
If you befriend some people, or have IRL friends who play, you can always get them to play your maps and hopefully they will play with others as well. Knowing that my friends will likely play it is a large part of my motivation.
