I wish I could participate in Sc2 mapster contests but its just so damn time consuming for students like me who get so much homework that they can't take a good deep breath without homework falling on top of them.
Do you think that the current SC2 mapster contests are casual friendly? Why or why not?
Define "casual friendly" as you see it?, and what possible suggestions do you have?
A contest of any sort denotes a level of quality involved. Which in the usual case implies "time" involved.
They seem fine the way they are. None of the contests have had a base requirement of being time consuming, some folks just make them seem that way when they devote all their waking hours to it, for whatever reason. That doesn't stop you from participating for fun though; you don't have to try and win them.
The next competition should be who can make a fun map in exactly one hour. Announce the theme and any required elements over IRC and then everyone has to submit their maps after an hour. Would that be casual friendly enough?
I want the contests to be casual friendly. We usually add restrictions like a maximum map size for minigame, a maximum length for cinematic ... When I create the rules I have in mind that it requires an average of 8 hours to make a viable entry.
If you can't invest 8 hours in 10 days then I am sorry, the contest is not really targeted at you :(
If you make it last 2 weeks, people are not going to do anything for the first week. So that's really a bad option.
In under 8 hours of work, it's really hard to have something that looks decent. In order to be fair to everyone you would have to impose a lot of constraints on what they can do, which is not the goal of the contests. I want it to be a way to innovate, find new crazy ideas that you wouldn't have done.
If you don't have like a 1-2 hours per day as a student, then you should look whats wrong with your time management, because it seems that there is something not important at all you waste time for and you could switch that time for something more useful :)
I work more often then not 10-12 hours per day and still have time to develop my own fairly big SC2 campaign at mornings/evenings and at the weekends.
Just a side note concerning time management. Every day I have around a hour when I am sitting in a train in the subway. Some time ago it was such a waste of time but now I use my pocket PC to write down my ideas and stuff for my campaign's design document. Actually, half of around 20.000 words it has was written during that "useless" time.

I lol-ed at this one. It reminded me of inception. "You have 2 minutes to design a maze that it takes me one minute to solve."
How bout a puzzle map for a contest? You have 2 hours to design an adventure/escape the room style map that takes an hour to solve. :)
If you like to terrain you could participate in the WTE - maybe its not a "real" contest but I guess that you can handle it like one.
Probably its not the time consuming as making a whole map and there are some folks that throw in a very good entrie with just an hour of work.

By my definition: as casual as it can get.
