Am I the only one who kinda laughs inside when people say "I want to make an ORPG map with many maps, and a lot of items, classes and .." I usually stop listening about there. Seriously, there's a couple of good fairly large RPGs available and in development, but sooo many people start out wanting to make a huge project like that and fails, I mean, maybe this is more of a shoutout to people who fails half-way through maps, but the car wasn't invented right after the horse either (Yes, Horses was invented, No questions asked ;) .. )
Any real ORPG out there now days, that you can actually have a class, items, load different maps and serve any purpose eg. bosses, rather than just random linear storyline?
Might just be me, but I kinda like starting on large projects with a slim chance of getting done, cuz I get satisfied by seeing an idea in my head come to life, even if I don't complete it, it lightens up the moments that come while working on it. Some might call it a waste of time, but I've come to see that even if I don't finish a large map, I always end up having learned something new.
My issue is with authors that "pick" a genre, and that single decision becomes their entire planning phase. This is not limited to ORPG's but is pervasive throughout all the community offerings, from the bottom barrel dregs to the #1 Jerk of the Circle Jerk. Only difference is a veneer of random doodads to distract you from discovering that the map is nothing but a crapshoot for personal glory.

That is one of the main reasons why I map edit. I don't share all of my ideas because they won't make sense to some people. I would open up editor and try out an idea or work on OneTwo's Tutorial and just have fun creating my own little world. I also enjoy talking about map ideas. We discussed about how players can choose to many classes such as a pirate, space merchant, freelancer, terran dominion pilot, etc. It was a lot of fun. Will the map be made? probably not
I find random ideas like that great. That's what we miss from War3 was trying maps that were randomly made (as of pre 1.3 popularity). The same can be said about Apple's app store.
Also, with regards to multiple people working on an rpg. I think this is okay... in my case my RPG is still in progress since june 2010 with data work taking 99% of the time. I've often thought about getting another person, but honestly I would just need that other person to sit in the data editor and make items 24/7 lol. Duplicate duplicate duplicate. I feel bad asking someone to do that, and would probably only do so if I could pay them.
Well, I hope to have it going soon because i think it's a great RPG (as queengambit will testity to lol) and it's bugging me I can't get it out sooner.
i think i'd prefer setting self up with a large project because during the making it gives you a taste of lots of different aspects of the data editor.

Same. I like discussing map ideas, even if i dont ever do anything about them. I continue making them in my mind even though i know that i will most likely never actually make the map. I made hero ideas for my current project i most likely won't ever do (because of the massive data work required... Believe me, that one hero has more data work needed than you could imagine) and i keep making those because i like posting them on my teams forum and discussing :)
I seriously don't get why there aren't more space games like EVE.... i haven't really played it (got the trial, comp couldn't take it), but i'd really like to see some more space based MMOs/RPGs

This. I think it's really fun. The only thing that bothers me is when I run into an issue and no one helps me with the answer (and I can't find it on the forums) :( But other than that, whether you finish a big project or not, it's hella fun just to work on!
Oh dear...large projects...where have I heard that...oh right! www.zhrpg.net where I have insanely dedicated myself to 6 (count them with me...six!) maps at once.
You know what though, I'm already done with one, finishing up another, that's 33%! ;_;
But If everything I have planned out gets finished, I think I will have left my mark on SCII, and the promise of that down the line is motivating enough!
ye i reckon after i finish this enfos remake ill have left a mark and since im releasing it public people can view it and learn from my data editing eg: spells/items/command card/triggers or whatever i have in my map at the time of release but ye i reckon settign yourself up witha project that is bigger then a small one is a good way to go cos it dips your feet into a wide range of areas that you wouldnt have entered otherwise.
I find ORPG's in the SC2 univers to be extremely annoying because it doesn't seem like anyone tries to innovate. I don't know where people get an outline or 'the list' of things that are required of an ORPG but I think if they threw half of it out the window and came up with something better/easier.....a lot more would actually get released and gain popularity faster (assuming they added/changed something that made it more fun than the typical ORPG).
Aside from that though, I think everyone that doesn't have experience with the editor should at least attempt to make an ORPG. I know I wouldn't know (or even care to know) half of what I do now if I hadn't started my own ORPG. That 'list' is huge and can teach you a lot.

Though on the other hand, if all these people teamed up, we'd have four or five seriously awesome ORPGs out there.

But you're also contributing wth tut's while makin, so even if your map never released in the end, it have damn contributed a lot.

Aye if I ever give up on maps I usually release them openly to be messed with lol.

I thought about turning VoidCraft (if anyone still remembers it, still working on it!) into a space ORPG.
I think it's a really unexplored concept in today's gaming. I think EVE online is the only current space ORPG out there.
Middle is unfinished.
I used to play eve online. Anyone want to try? =)

I wish people like you would look at the RPG I'm working on. The link to it is the image in my signature.
Nice necro. Found it on page 4?
Maybe it's because it's late here, but I'm intensely amused that the acronym for your game is RON.

Lol, I didn't choose the name.
