Hi all! I took a couple months off modding, but I'm back and looking forward to starting a new project to be released alongside HoTS. However, before I get started, I thought I'd ask our little community what sort of games we actually want to play. It feels like Tug of Wars and TDs have already been done to death, but other genres (like MOBAs) are largely untouched.
So, to each forum goer that reads this: what type of map are you looking for? (As a player, not a modder)
As a player I want to play something that is not directly PvP. I don't want a Team vs Team MOBA, I don't want a last man standing deathmatches. I want something where other human players are not bent on killing me.
Remember DBZ tribute on WC3 something like that would be nice, that genre I mean.
I think it would be the best if it was based off something though like an anime or a game or something other then Starcraft and Warcraft series
It's tough to create a game that tributes another game or an anime series, since we only have SC2 assets to work with and most editors aren't artists. I try to stay away from standard SC2 elements though "marauders", "marines", etc.

Interesting. I'm the same way, but I feel like most players are the opposite. I wish I was better at AI. A MOBA that pitted you against good AI opponents would be wicked.
I'd like to play something from the TWAT genre (Only mapcraft viewers will understand this :p)
Ok, on a serious note, I like hero maps. Prefer ones that aren't directly hero combat (Not necessarily have no PvP elements - HeroLineWars for example is sort of a PvP map, but you dont directly attack the enemy team)
I guess Hero Siege/Defenses are my favourite.
And if I had to name a map that was the most fun for me, it's Magicide. Eiviyn had some brilliant ideas there that make the game a lot more fun than most PvP maps.
You know the result of this pool is kinda fixed? We as a modding community have a sort of different type of personality from the majority of players.
You could make a poll on TL though. It would be as close to the truth as you can get
Yeah your right on that, I just mean an RPG like that, but for all I know Goku Firebat might be like that,
Well that Model editor is coming out, then There will be a few good artist out there. Well ill suggest a project such as that, at a later date, Your right though, Its an emmense amount of work.
I would love a smaller project such as a Arcman, A Pacman remake with an Archon. That would be SWEET!!!!

Yeah, but the modding community tends to be more loyal to well-crafted games, we can spread the word easier, etc;
I imagine PvP would probably be the most popular result outside of the modding community.
I'm liking the range I'm seeing here. A micro heavy, hero based, indirect PvP game is what's been suggested so far :P. I'm shocked at the RPG vote so far though. Personally I've always felt RPGs to be a write-off, since we're limited by map size.
@ TheAlmaity and DuckytheDuck: Both of you mentioned a distaste for PvP and specifically mentioned hero vs hero combat. Are you guys opposed to a game type where one team is heroes and the other is mass units, or something like that?

I think "Most people" want an RPG simply because there are no Good ones Available, Mafia and DBZ tribute Ruled WC3, but in SC2 there arent any good ones(any good ones that Ive played im sure theres that undiscovered great map out there.)
Personally I've always felt RPGs to be a write-off, since we're limited by map size.
I voted RPG, Campaign and Co-operative.
The only reason why I would ever play any PvP map is because that maps heroes are awesome (exception being Goku Firebat and Magicide because not only their heroes are awesome but in those maps fun level > frustration from defeat). Remove PvP aspect and you get cool heroes. Add things to kill with heroes and you get RPG or hero defense. But while hero defenses are just that - a hero and hordes of monsters to kill, good RPGs usually offer much more. Storyline and exploration alongside with immerse world is an experience on a whole different level.
About campaigns, I think most people enjoyed WOL campaign. Even though I think that WOL storyline was an abomination, gameplay was great. A set of maps and challenges bidden together by story is a pleasant experience.
Cooperation is another sweet type of maps. Working together to overcome obstacles is fun. I remember good old SC1 days with "Impossible Scenarios" maps. Those were fantastic. You can also count in simple things like Observer dodges, Bounds and all sorts of other minigames/challenges.

That could be fun, I just hope that you're not thinking of Catch'n'Run/Vampirim/Cat'n'Mouse type of game. It really depends on how you design it. I will play a map of map type that I hate if it's fun and resonates with me, and I might just call map a total failure if it's of bad quality even if it's of type that I favor.

Well, a good single player RPG with map swapping would be amazing. Also, you can just have everything in 1/2 scale to get a 512x512 map, which is actually a lot of space.

Ahhh, don't insult me, sir! I strive for only the highest quality maps! :P.
How does one make a compelling multiplayer RPG with a limited map size? I can understand a single player one, since you can switch between maps, but multiplayer RPGs seem so pointless to me in SC2...
Can you switch between maps in multiplayer, provided all users are on the same map at one time?
@OneTwoSC:
I'm going to shamelessly self-promote myself here: have you tried Formation defense for a 'good TD'? I only had one person give bad feedback on it and LOTS of good feedback. It was quite popular for a while, but the updates dried up because I got busy with school (I actually have a finished, unreleased upgrade which I really should publish).

I wish I could set up a poll for this...
[Edit]: Poll up!

editing your thread allows for adding a poll :^)
(just click edit on the top of your tread (above your first post) and in this window (where you can change the tittle) you can add poll
:O, then I shall!

I'd love a well-made RPG.

SPACEWAR Tribute
This is something that I have yet to see another game do.
Based on older space ship combat games.
My next step is to create a co-op "Asteroids" mode.
SPACEWAR Tribute - Development
SPACEWAR Tribute - Online Gameplay
SPACEWAR Tribute - Planet
SPACEWAR Tribute - Sun
Let me know what you think.

I myself am shocked to see RPG and campaign (!) so popular
Personally I like strategic PVP
ie SPACEWAR Tribute

A GOOD co-op zombie campaign.
A decent save/load RPG with PvP.
Some good TD's like War3 had.
Adventure/survival maps as well.. like darwin's island, sheep tag, resident evil, life of a peasant, wilderness survival, etc...
(Just throwing it all out there)
