Diplo maps are also called conquer maps, and are, at their heart, very large scale altered melee games. The diplo map has evolved over the years, from conquering nations in diplomacy, to tactical spawn usage and defense in lotr, to the invention of choices in Azeroth Wars and its many variations and descendants.
The art of making an epic battle, simple yet complex, large yet small, tactical yet chancy, is an art. Where will it head originally in SC2? I don't know, but I love the genre, so I am willing to push the envelope a bit. The goal of diplo maps has always been to destroy the competition, and while it does not define a diplo map, it has been an important part of its evolution. However, in Azeroth Wars LR, the map had always been very slow near the end, to the point where it could take a while to finish off every single player after the last 4 remain. In light of this, my upcoming diplo map, Meme Wars, has decided to take a different route. One of points. The point system allows the game to remain consistently good. A player could be winning without the game having lost a lot of players because their bases died. The system of points allows the game to get very intense and desperate when one player is up by a lot of points, and can change the tide of the game.
The point system, however, must be regulated, and the same points that are a victory condition, are a unit training value. This value, labeled "internets", is incredibly flexible, making games long as the win criteria is having more than 9000 internets.
Another addition to the scene of the diplo map, is that of the idea of hero recruiting. As in lotr games, heroes far excel troops in power, and it makes it a bit more interesting when heroes can be recruited from the user-made video site we know and love. Youtube is the key to unit recruiting, simply by bringing units to the Like Button until the hero is recruited.
Though there is more that this diplo is planning to accomplish, I will save that for another day. The map has plenty of work to be done, and I feel as if I could do well to brainstorm some more ideas for my map.
Feel free to post ideas for the map if you wish, as I am just starting development and plan this map to be big. The map itself is to be very sleek, and I hope it will be "up there" with the best of the conquer maps!
Hello Leartes, I played Diplomacy in wc3 and want to bring that scene to starcraft 2. Ive got my own map going on, and i need help testing. Perhaps we can work together on eachothers maps?
I am in the process of taking my unfinished Diplomacy/Risk Project from Starcraft 1 to Starcraft 2. Maybe you guys would be interested in testing as well?
War of Fantasia - The fight of Gods, Heroes and Demons. Forty powerful mythic nations fight to control of World Eden. Who will succeed??

You guys are taking the "diplo" genre to be the diplo map, hasn't anyone ever played Azeroth Wars?
Azeroth Wars is the newest example of a "diplo" map. The diplo means a grandiose war that takes place in a themed setting. There are many names for this genre, some call it, generally, altered melee. I don't know what you call it, but i think it should be titled "diplo" in honor of the popularizer of the series.
i disagree, to me diplo maps are and always will be realistic historical conflicts on a grandiose scale
for me if you changed bw diplomacy and had riduclous antions, like aliens from space, or zombies id despise the shit out of it
i refuse to call azeroth wars a diplo, and i disagree with heros being included in the genre, that is called hero wars, similar to dota
and i know that diplomacy games will not be remade in a more kickass way than they were in sc1 but still beinghistorical because of the way blizaard has
made starting a map, im sorry but making that anyone can play a map anytime without a host i think is bullshit, because it makes concreteness and the imposssiblility of change, becaus eof the system things will stay as they are for long periods of time and becaus eof that diplo will never take off much in sc2, i know theres the ww2 map in the top 5 but for some reason that map just doesnt have the same feel for it, partially because infantry meant nothing and tanks everything but also because of the editor, you can do anything with the editor and when a piece of art is clay one tends to stray more abstract that practial the making of maps, i mean seriously some of the maps are ridiculous, and it makes the majority the contorller and the minority the outlier, heres the equation for popularity of a map is y=x^3-r^2 y= overall popularity, x=hours played, and r=the number ranked from the top
I did many takes on his during W3, but never released anything consistent. I got mostly stopped by limits (I had to spawn buildings with triggers because I went over the limits again and again, and I was obsessed with making it be 480x480 yes-or-yes).
I'm currently working on a map, although it's of a smaller scale, mostly to see how it works around. It's in closed beta, and I test it with official forum people, but you could join if you want (just add me and ask, or join the "why no" channel, the people I play this with usually gather there for spamming xD). Matches more the typical "Helm's Deep" or "Minas Tirith" maps rather than big scale ones, but well. Thread here: http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/1999600091 :).
If that has success, and I see how people react to those environments, I'll try to make a bigger scale one, maybe taking some landscape from some franchise (Middle Earth, Azeroth, Earth) or maybe making a new one. Or maybe just StarCraft with planets. What I love of these maps is that the most important thing is placing everything correctly, not triggers or data.
Looking for all of your diplos, I always loved this genre, and played thousands of games at AW, DaoW and LotR:WotR.
PS: In my old W3 Spanish mapmaker clan we called these maps "epic melee" or "epic RTS" :P.
Interesting, were you a fan of lord of the rings in sc1? I made this post maybe half a year ago, before I found lotr, I since postponed Meme Wars for a more lord of the rings type map, rather than a lotrish map.
If you like lotr, my name in-game is UloseTheGame.140 and I can introduce you to the US lotr community, who plays maps like this a LOT. One of our mapmakers, JTaylor, has decided to take on the task of creating a diplo style map based on Song of Ice and Fire. I think that the lotr community might procure some interesting maps which might give the "epic rts" scene another chance in SC2. Pray tell, what region are you on?
I didn't play many customs on SC1, but focused a lot on W3 (and they weren't so different in concepts as far as I know).
Coincidentally, I got some ideas to make a StarCraft-themed diplo map. They're just ideas, so I may just reflect them roughly in some fast-made map. I want to finish with my other map first, which needs a bit more of balance and heroes/mercenaries. I always wanted to make my own Azeroth-world-war like AW and DaoW, but never finished it xD.
I may post some of them later, if I see they work.
I remade Diplomacy 7.7 Gold, I'm on the U.S server, come find me in channel Diplomacy my name is Oblivion. I want to find a good player base for diplomacy, start up a U.S community.

what the heck does diplo stand for.

Diplomacy? Just a guess...
Diplo means "diplomacy". It was a really popular type of map in SC1.

If any of you are interested I'm looking to put together a team to remake Blood & Iron: Europe 1870 from StarCraft 2.
Imagine a diplo on a huge scale with strategic and diplomatic depth.
