I have seen ... Countless maps that marked planning and most of them don't even see the light of day. I am asking you please stop creating projects and not even finish the project. It is sad to be expecting to see a map come out and then it doesn't. What do you guys think of this?
I personally think that it doesn't matter. Plus if someone wants to take over a project, they can PM one of the mods and we can see about having it transferred. Also a lot of projects may appear inactive, but are in reality just being developed without being updated on the website.
I think people have some responsibility when creating a thread on their project, to release their map at some point, and not just leave it when they get bored.
True, the main reason to make maps is to have fun, but if you're bragging about your map, and how awesome you think it's going to be, you are making yourself responsible to get your map made, and you should at least feel bad about not getting it out then. Remember that people takes time to view your project-page/-thread, and maybe even give feedback.
So yeah, I don't think this thread is stupid, I think it's a real problem about modding in general.
I do not by any means say that you should not show off your map if you're not sure it'll ever get finished, just don't let people think it is being released for sure. People should use more time on their maps, and less showing "it" off! That's why this is more than a small issue in my opinion.
So how would you go about enforcing the completion of a project? You can't really, because any sort of hard rule would most likely deter someone from trying more than encourage them to complete. Any sort of incentive system could be worked around since there's no way to tell a map in progress from one that won't be finished. It's not a matter of completion state, consistency of time spent on the project (everyone has real lives) or even popularity. Projects are a way to show off works in progress and plans of intent, there is no way to enforce their completion.
Map spotlights are the best way to bring that has great potential out into the light, and we have that in place now. Whether they get completed or not something we can control, it's all in the hands of the creators.
That is just discouraging the mapper from starting the map in the first place, if they feel they might not be able to finish it. And who knows, maybe some of these projects will be picked back up at some point. You never know.
I think this is a real problem because 90% of the time, the map never materializes and that is just waste of time and space. I mean whats the point of creating a project, under the label of "Planning" and never finish it or finish it in 10 years time (Come on SOTIS was created 2-3 months after the release of Sc2). I am asking people to stop showing off your idea when you aren't going to finish it. I mean can't you just wait till you finished creating your map then release it? And this is disturbing me now because of the abundant of "Planning" maps been released, going back to the old Sc2mapster days, people will be eager to release proper maps. Now we have people releasing these "Planning" maps forever reasons. I am not pointing out useless topics, I just want to encourage people to stop doing this (Check out the map page. Nearly the whole of first page is "Planning Maps", it is drowning out the released maps).
Not to criticize, but 'planning' means what it means. No part of the word means 'will become finished content'. The planning stage is getting an idea of what is being created, and generate interest in the project. Projects in this phase should hurt no one. Why would you have any expectations out of this phase anyways. The only way you can be affected by this is if you're investing your own time and effort to each one of these, and subsequently having your time wasted because they don't take off; which is not a fault of the project.
As for flooding the site... there's filters for such available to you. If you don't want to see all the projects in 'planning' phase, just choose alpha, beta or release instead.
Are you talking about maps in the project development forum? I was thinking the other day, how come I never see any of those maps in game? Some of them were actually released, but I never see them. :( At this point, when I see a new map project, I just go wow. But then I know I won't actually get to play it. But here's hoping for starcraft universe will actually appear in b.net. *Cross your fingers!*
You intend on making a map. You don't know if you will finish it, but you think you might. You don't want anyone else to get the same idea, so you make a project page.
It is that simple, case closed. There is nothing, and there will never be anything, that discourages a mapper from starting a project.
Sotis is a piece of shit - sure it was created in 2-3 months, and it has had a year to get better and it hasn't. It is still a piece of shit (when compared with Wc3 Dota). You want good quality projects, expect to wait for them. At the end of the day, as it stands at this point in time, we are not getting paid for the thousands of hours we pour into map making projects so a bunch of kids can have fun and trolllolol the game once it is released. Anything that gets released you should be grateful for, because you know that you yourself will never have that level of dedication, never have that skill level, to accomplish anything more than fail trolling.
Ha Ha, I am sorry if you think I am trolling. But I am not. I do wait for maps to come out and I eagerly review them. I am asking those people who create planning maps and then just forget about. I want them to ask themselves, are they willing to commit to the project and do finish the project? If not, then don't create a planning map.
There are so many good mappers out there that create planning maps and I have no problems with it. I am not expecting A HUGE amount of dedication and I am not expecting no dedication at all. I know life is hard and life is always there to hold us back and there are things a lot better than Sc2 in general. I just don't think planning maps should be for those who are not dedicated. That is why I created this thread. To encourage those who have a Great map and they want to show everyone to ask themselves:
1. Are you dedicated to this map?
2. Are you willing to give up some spare time to create maps to everyone?
3. Is this your thing?
I am sorry if I seem so rude and arrogant, I just want to pass a message across to those people who are about to create planning maps.
Again, you're doing nothing to enforce those questions, because you can't. If I made a project and answered yes to all those questions, how are you going to make me finish my map and release it to the public?
The problem is map making is a hobby and we have real life to deal with first. With me I usually finish what I start unless there is some major complication.

this site is full of "projects" that are wasting bandwidth - they are set up and never touched again
does it really matter?
If maker gets bored, why not just move on.
No harm done to anyone. Having a good time is way more important than forcing maps out.
What a stupid thread.

12 months of free curse premium for anybody that actually makes something!!!
Probably not the best idea now that I think about =/
Anyways. People don't have to finish their maps. It's very hard to work on something your not interested in, and if you loose interest... It happens.

TacoMan I like to ask since when does creating a project under the title "planning" is an incentive to create maps?
