Sometimes I read the forum and many people with great mapping skills are bashing TD. Mephs from Smashcraft for example. In fact, #1 Most Popular is Squadron TD which is Tower Defense game and by huge huge margin 32k hours vs #2 Special Forces 18k hours. Star Battle maxed out at 7.5k hours back then. Smashcraft on the other hand, stuck at 30 hours.
Tower Defense is not dead. Just have to be good one. Vexal TD managed to stay top for a long time too. Element TD stamped at 3k hours.
I'm sure people bash it not because of its popularity, but because of the lack of creativity. Map design is about innovating and not making a replica just to have a popular map.
most people make TDs as a learning experience. i did. a standard tower defense was my first map and it taught me alot about the editor.
it was pretty popular during it's time in beta.
i dunno why squadron td is so popular to be honest. i feel it's the persistent stats i guess. i dont find the gameplay particulary good. it seems to scale extremely rapidly (i havn't played it much so i'm probably just noob, but i feel like im doing fine then all of a sudden im getting raped and i can't forsee how i could of done it better)
anyway. yea. TDs are fine. but you wont get other mappers respecting them at all. mainly because they can look at it and understand everything from the get go and think "i could do this in my sleep" which is true. but then again making a fun map isn't all about making the most complex and amazing triggers/effects imaginable.

I don't like them, but I can see why they are popular. They're easy to pick up, not too chaotic or confusing, and they don't take too long. I think they are boring though.

TD:s can be fun but only for a while. I really wouldnt bother making one since most likely the replay value is close to 0 (atleast to me). And TDs are mostly time killer for me, nothing I would play like a maniac (Like I played dota in the old days).
But I guess I still would like to see line tower wars or wintermaul wars, they were pretty fun and different even though they got boring after a while too...not to mention it was really harsh depending on your enemies/allies...
squadron isn't really a TD, it is a nice mutation. but i played it once and it was boring as hell.. way to much time between the waves where i just looked at my 5 units an thought... well.. there are units. i can look at them.
but this is the reason it consumes so much time ;) it takes forever.

Whether or not you can do something yourself is a stupid criteria for whether something is good.

I think you missed the jist of his post.

Which part of that is the gist?
@Vexal:
i was explaining why alot of mappers on here have no respect for people who make TDs because they see it as beneath their abilties.
"but then again making a fun map isn't all about making the most complex and amazing triggers/effects imaginable."
I could make pong in 30 minutes. Doesn't make the guy who did it first any less of a genius =P
kind of my point
First TD creator was a genius. Just the first.
