I was wondering if Blizzard would allow such things to happen? Does anybody have a link of where Blizzard has officially announced if putting advertisements in custom games is allowed?
I'm pretty sure they don't have problems if you advertise another map of yours or someone else's. And adding links to forums or websites is common too.
But better don't try to add any kind of commercial advertisement. I don't think Blizz will like that kinda thing, it's probably a reason to remove your map (at least if it's reported).
Well, they do have that one line in their terms of service, license agreement, or w/e the thing is called that people never read, which basically says they can ban anything they want, so even if they didn't mention ads anywhere else, they can still remove your map and add the "no ads" part in the next patch.
Only professional mappers get cash from creating maps. Not because they include ads, but because it's their job and they're obviously paid for it. That's the only legal way to get some money from making maps.
Advertisement by amateur mappers is illegal (or at least against the EULA you accept when installing any game): The game publishers clearly state in their EULA that it is forbidden to use their material (ie. the game and other tools associated) in order to make profit.
Advertisement in your map is obviously strictly forbidden, as it is an indirect way to make profit, using Blizzard's material. Not only your map will get banned from the servers, but you might also lose your Battlenet account for not following the EULA... and you might even get sued by Blizzard for this if you made money with the ads in your map.
If you want to get paid for your maps, start a career in the video games industry. Be warned though, it takes (at the very least) 2 years before officially becoming a junior level designer (you need to learn 3D modeling, texturing, coding, etc...). I started mapping at the age of 12-13 for my own pleasure, now I'm 26 (in 5 days) and I'm still considered a junior level designer in the video games industry. It's very hard to find a company wishing to hire you when you're not a senior/lead level designer (in France, at least), so don't expect a miracle... You'll probably end up the same way as I did: making maps for your pleasure and not getting paid for them anyway.
The keyword here of course being "non-beneficial." Starcraft-related sites could easy get away with this.
The rule of thumb here is if you're going to cite something as illegal, quote the applicable section of EULA/law/whatever.
Because no one here is really a lawyer.
Yes, non-beneficial advertising is forbidden. I didn't search for the EULA thoroughly but since I know how these things work, I assume without taking much risk that both non-beneficial and beneficial advertising are forbidden. I already explained why in my first post here:

This is a common rule which applies to any entertainment material (music, games, movies and series, etc...). You can't make profit out of someone else business without their explicit consent (ie. a contract is signed by both parties). You don't need to be a lawyer to understand this, it is mostly common sense. :)
And from what I read in the battle.net forums your map isn't really loved by people without a high end pc because of the huge amount of units. or are you already focusing on a specific target group for your ad? Rich ppl! :D
Uggghhh....Do you want sc2 to be like EVERYTHING ELSE ON THE INTERNET??? Covered in stupid, pointless, adds you never would want to read, let alone click on?? Wait for the marketplace if your that desperate. Otherwise, get your map popular (if its not already) and make a website for it. Include a link to the site in the game itself. Then put adds on the website.
edit- If you don't have experience with website design check out 'google sites'...Its a free website builder, no code, and free domain name.
What if a game company like Valve put resources (alot!) to develop a free popular SC2 map (lets say Valve Dota!) which mentions the company (or at least that the maker of the map is from Valve) that created it.
Would Blizzard remove that map under the no advertising rule?
EDIT: Hey! Who wants to play a little April Fools joke on Blizzard? *chuckle*
If you're making profit off Blizzard content, Blizzard will either find a way to get a cut of the profit made or remove your map. It's the only logical way a company will act. And Blizzard of today will readily do this.
Phantom II (SEA) and 1 Million Ultralisks ... lets start with Map number 1.
Phantom II was bloody awesome before you touched it ... short history lesson for anyone not on SEA ... you contacted Arminius, asked him for the source code to the map, added a bunch of retarded, unbalanced heroes and new units, added cheats for yourself, and published it under the same name!?
Come the f.... on mate ... you are giving us SEA peeps a bad name. So you butchered the only decent map ever to come out of SEA, without adding any triggering yourself (with the exception of said cheats) and had the nerve, the nerve to call it your own. And then, you completely f'ed up your last upload with having 4 computer players who can't even play Phantom so no one even plays your map anymore on SEA ... everyone has gone back to Arminius's original map.
The 1 Million Ultralisks is with out doubt the worst lag fest, unpolished map, I have ever came across. You only got people playing it because they thought it was an upgrade of 1 Million Zerglings which is an amazing map. You have huge bottle necks, in that map, nothing that makes it unique.
Now, you really have the nerve to come on here asking if you can advertise in 1 Million Ultralisks ... seriously ... are you even from SEA or what!?
I am ashamed you are my brother, seriously, learn more and make some really nice polished maps.
For anyone who think's I am flaming him, read what I wrote carefully, and stay out of SEA Internal Affairs :)
The only problem is that 1M Ultralisks is a fad. It will be forgotten about soon. You can't advertise in the game itself. The smart thing to do is promote a website and use that to generate the money.
BTW blizzard will ban maps that have real advertising in them.
If I got pepsi to pay me to add like pepsi advertisements in my map.... and as soon as blizzard took notice. they would take my map down fairly quickly.
I do believe this is mentioned in the EULA.
Rule of thumb. If you put something in your map that makes you money but not blizzard money ... you will be terminated...

Thank You.
I'd be very careful with those things.

I see, because I just made this map called "1 Million Ultralisks" and thought it would be a neat idea to make some cash off it.

Ehm, its illegal trying to get money out of someone's else product.
I just read the content policy, advertising is considered moderately inappropriate:

Somebody should make a topic about this on NA blizz forum. (as nobody reads EU from blizz)
I wonder what do they really think about this.
I think allowing advertising would beneficial for blizz.

Why would you want to put ads in your map? Everybody hates ads.

That's different. Valve would be referring to itself.
I can put a link to my website. I can't, however, display sponsored ads from random companies.

Phantom II (SEA) and 1 Million Ultralisks ... lets start with Map number 1.
